16 Year Old Premed, Applying to med school this cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You have done what is necessary to be interviewed. Interviews are conducted to assess fitness as well as fit. If you show the requisite level of emotional maturity (as well as the other core competencies), you are likely to be accepted, just like everyone else.

Hello, Doogie Howser. You've done very well for yourself!

I'm curious as to what standards you have that your advisors are requesting for you to lower. You've got a lot going for you.

The age will only be an issue if you "act your age", so to speak. It only matters if you're pitching teenage angst fits and being immature/irresponsible, which doesn't seem to be an issue.

Truthfully, I'm happy for you. A lot of applicants would want your numbers.

Make sure that you have some objective eyes on your PS to help you out, and do well in your interviews. Then you have a shot of being able to have your first legal drink during residency (isn't that bananas?).

Best of luck to you!

I am glad so see another pre-med like me. I am in a similar situation as OP, I am 17 yo senior, got into biggest state univ at 13, will graduate with chemistry and biology before turning 18, honors research with thesis, current 4.0 gpa, mcat 37. I had been living on my own since 14, and got emancipated by the court the week I turned 16, so I could go on foreign medical mission trip and work full time during summer at a childrens hospital.
From the limited feedback I have received, I think my age will not matter because I have been independent for years. I guess I will find out soon since I am starting to do my secondaries.

I so so so commend you for this. There are near 30 year olds I know that still live with their parents. Good for you! I wish you both all the best (I'm jealous, I wish I were that intelligent)

I don't want it to seem like I am passing judgement, but this is just some information I have heard from past medical admission committee members. They have said that they are sometimes reluctant to accept college students who are 20-21 years old and even sometimes 22 seems a little young. They base this judgement of acceptance or declination solely off of your age and independent of your ECs or grades. They say that a doctor needs to be mature and trustworthy and patients are reluctant to trust a child. I commend you for your work and I wish you the best of luck getting in, but age does play a part second to knowledge. The human brain makes judgement calls based on the maturity of your brain. Some mature faster than others, but the science has its facts as well. Good luck, sir.
