Hey y'all, just thought I'd get a couple of expert opinions here. I just got my step 1 scores back (disappointing, to be sure) and I got a 194. I'm in the upper third of my class and was hoping to lasso a residency somewhere in the western US. Is this still a possibility and any reccomendations on where I should apply and what I could do from here on out to help my chances? Thanks for your advice and help!

I think so. Step 1 is a very important part of the application, but it's not everything. If I were in your position, I'd work hard to get great letters of recommendation, good clinical grades, research publications, whatever else could improve your application. Also, I would study like mad for step 2 and take it early - a high score on this exam can take you places. Good luck!

Look at it this way...

I'm a U.S. IMG who outscored you on Step 1 (230+/90+), has research experience and publications, great LORs already, completing multiple anesthesia rotations at various hospitals with residency programs, etc. and you still have a much better shot than I do in getting a gas program.

I wouldn't let your Step 1 score deter you. If you want gas, go for it. In other words, ditto jocwyo.

Good luck.

Hello,

I scored 200 on Step I. I had an incredibly tough time with Step I. I am also a DO. However I matched at a "top 5" (yes this is subjective) program. I took Step 2 early, aced it and got good LOR's. I also rotated at the program I matched at. I am not a superstar, but I really got along with everyone and have a true love for anesthesia. Go for it.
