I'm taking Ochem III right now and am debating between C or W.

Ochem I and II, I got B and a solid A. So I thought I would be able to do well with my study habits after ochem II, but I got really sick for a few weeks, and by the time I got better, it's already a week before the final (summer Ochem III is 5 weeks course). I think the best I can hope for right now is realistically C-.

I have GPA 3.7 right now so I'm leaning more towards getting a W than C.

This will be my first W ever (and even if I got C, it would be my first C in my life...) and I'm really worried that this will badly affect my chances of getting into top med schools.

Would 1 W be overlooked? If I'll have to explain in the interview, would illness be reasonable excuse? It's not like I have proof of illness or that I was working so much to financially support myself so I'm thinking what if the interviewer simply thought I should have worked harder...

Maybe I'm thinking too much. I'm just really stressed right now.

Just any advice or support would be very much appreciated.. Thank you.

** oh and I'll retake Ochem III once the actual school year starts and certainly aim for A.

I'd say take the W. If it gets brought up, which it probably won't if its only 1 W, you have a good excuse and your Ochem I and II grades show that your strong with your sciences. I wouldn't ruin your gpa because you were ill.

That's what's probably going to happen. If you were sick for few weeks, then shouldn't you gone to see a doctor? Maybe you should be more specific - was it one week, two weeks, or beyond? Whatever the case may be, if you can't explain, it could be a red flag in apps.

Just wondering though...why take Orgo III? You only need two semesters of Orgo.

Thank you for the advice. Now I'm really leaning towards getting W. Anyone else?

That was going to be my question...Who knows...Premeds always wanna show that they are the smartest kid on the block.

My school is quarter system. So 1st and 2nd quarters, I did well.. but 3rd part... yea.

I started out the first week fine, but 2nd week, I was really sick. and then during the third week, there was midterm. And I did bad on the midterm...

The class is just one midterm and one final. SO basically, I'm screwed..

Nevermind. I talked to the professor and I think I can get B- if I spend some sleepless nights. Thanks for advice though!

W doesn't eff up your GPA. A "C" can. W the class.

I'd still choose the W over the B-. Also I am not sure how AMCAS calculates a B-.
