1st step program - Ross

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am not in the 1st Step program. I am a third year student.

But, from what I understand, the 1st Step program is designed to prepare applicants who are "not deemed ready" to start the medical curriculum. I am not sure you can apply for it. I think you are assigned/recommended to it by the admissions committee if your application did not make it through the admissions/selection process.

I think your best bet is to apply for the M.D. program and see how it turns out. If you are accepted, then great. If your application got rejected due to minor deficiencies, then the admissions committee might recommend that you enroll in the 1st Step program.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck🙂

leukocyte, how are you third year clinicals at ross going? Good clinicals? Also, how hard is it to do all of your rotations at the california location? 210+ or 225+ needed?

How many Florida clinical sites are there...can you do all the core rotations at a florida teaching hospital? thanks

Dear Spinestudent,

I am just starting my first clinical rotation, the Family Practice core rotation in Miami. I am still waiting for my USMLE score report, so I do not have the rest of my clinical schedule yet. I will get the rest of my clinical schedule as soon as I receive and send in my USMLE score report to Ross. Ross allows you to do your Family Practice rotation in Miami while you are waiting for your USMLE score report.

The Family Practice rotation in Miami is good, but not the best. It would really help if you knew Spanish since most of the older patients at Larkin Hospital, and most of the patients at the Kiwanis clinics (lower income clinics) speak only Spanish. I do not speak Spanish, so I often rely on translators and dictionaries. Teaching is good, but it depends on the doctor you are rotating with and how much he/she will allow you to do. I like my Kiwanis clinics experiences, since most of the time I tend to be ?The Doctor?, and have a lot of autonomy. But to be honest with you, I am only doing my Family Practice rotation in Miami to save time so that I can graduate on time to make the 2005 match. If I had a choice (if I was not pressured on time), I would wait and do my Family Practice rotation at a university teaching hospital.

As far as I know, the Larkin Hospital in Miami is the only clinical site in Florida. You can only do your Family Practice rotation at Larkin.

I heard, but I am not sure, that you have to score at least a 215 on the Step 1 to do your rotations at Kern. I also heard that they give preference to California state residents. If you have a 215+ Step 1 score and a good GPA, I do not think that you will have a problem going to Kern.

Starting your basic sciences in September will not put you under pressure unless you delay taking the USMLE Step 1. If you take the USMLE in June or early July after finishing your 5th Semester, you should comfortably finish in time to start your residency. Taking the USMLE in August or later might however put you under some time pressure.

Good Luck

Peace
