I understand that applying for electives is not an option until the third or fourth year of medical school. If so, I would very much like to know what other kinds of programs exist, and which of those are the best for 1st year students to focus on... (I'm not an US student)

In addition, other than English, what are the most important languages for doctors to learn? Either for access to medical literature or international programs.

I am also in first year and I am aware there are electives that you can do as a first year student. In fact I am actively looking for one for myself. UQ has a small but nice database....which might give you a start.
