Do I have a chance with 2.21 sGPA & 20DAT? I do have 3 +years of shadowing, 500+ volunteering, 2 years of elected positions with sorority. I have all my transcripts, LOR, DAT scores and complete application submitted to AADSAS. Hopefully will be sent to the schools this Friday. Your honest opinion plz...
Thanks

Well, you need to consider schools' GPA cutoffs. Some are 2.75.

Even an underrepresented minority applicant doesn't stand a slight chance with a 2.21 sGPA. I personally wouldn't bank on getting in this year. Start thinking about back-ups to improve your application for next cycle. Your ECs are average and your DAT score is slightly better than the accepted average for most schools. But even with their posted stats, I'm willing to bet those with a 20AA have a 3.5+..

Sorry, but you literally have no chance this year.

Never say never. However, know when to back off and re-strategize? Chances are you'd be wasting a lot of time and money applying this cycle. Good advice above.

I personally think if dentistry is what you really want (anything professional really), you could do well to bang out a year or two of post-bacc work or another degree with a great GPA attached (3.5+), to prove you're capable of performing at a high standard academically.

In all honesty, even if you scored a 25+ on your DAT ... I would find it highly unlikely for you to be admitted for Fall 2012. I've said this before to numerous pre-dents, there is nothing that can make up for a sub-par GPA. Realistically speaking, I would focus the next year in either completing post-graduate science coursework (post-bac) OR completing a science-based masters program. There are plenty of one year masters programs out there. If you opt for the post-bac route, be sure to take at least 3-4 science courses per semester and it is imperative that you post above a 3.6 each semester. It will be tough to bring up that GPA, but if you sincerely wish to pursue dentistry, I highly recommend completing additional science coursework to boost your GPA.

If it was me, I would look to see which science courses I did poorly in and retake those immediately... after a semester or two of acing those courses, I would apply for a one-year science-based M.S. program. I would buckle down and make sure I maintain a 4.0... then re-apply with your 20 DAT, etc... like I said, it will take time... but nothing is impossible, it all comes down to how badly you want it!

Based on the research I have done, I have to say your chances are slim to none. Even with a 23-26AA your chances are still very slim.

It took you 3+ years of shadowing to decide on dentistry? Your time might have been better spent on academics than on ec.

lighting money on fire.

what are your plans for this upcoming year? are you taking classes?

Do I have any chance???

DAT Score Breakdown:
Overall GPA: 3.20 20 (Academic Average)
Undergrad GPA: 3.20 19 (Total Science)
Undergrad Science GPA: 3.17
19 (Biology)
20 (General Chemistry)
20 (Organic Chemistry)
18 (Reading Comprehension)
21 (Quantitative Reasoning)
24 (Perceptual Ability)
I have more than 2 years of shadowing, 200+ hours of volunteering, have held elected positions etc.
Honest opinion please... Thanks

How did your gpa drop by 1 whole point? lol
Also... those scores are not bad at all. The gpa is decent too...

Makes me wonder what's holding you back to make you a 3rd time applicant...
LORs or perhaps just terrible interviewing skills...

Reminds me of that old saying:
"D" is for Dentist

You do have a chance at the school I went to if you're hot or sleezy; you just need to be willing to work the right faculty/administrators. Here are two approaches:

1.) Schedule a visit to Boston University as a prospective student and make yourself as visible as possible. Tour the facilities, chat with faculty, leave a couple photos and your contact info. The sleezeballs will come to you like a herd of cattle. BU's faculty are notorious for sleeping with and even marrying their students.
or
2.) Get a job at the school, and start working the faculty/admins. If you need proof, the Dean's hot former secretary/assistant just graduated BU Dental this year.

Don't be discouraged.

Let this be the thing that motivates you! 👍

Just work on your GPA hardcore, and apply later.

Do you have a list of these schools ?
These cutoffs will still work if you get 3.8 Grad GPA ?

When they talk about cut offs, it's your cGPA..so as long as a 3.8 grad GPA will get you above a 2.75..then I guess you meet the minimum.

Please accept my sincere apology for posting a wrong gpa. My current sGPA is 3.21 and GPA is 3.24 with 20AA DAT/19TS. I have completed B.S in Bio-medical & will have my second B.S. (in Dental laboratory Science with 4.0 GPA) at the end of Summer II, 2011.

how do you make the same mistake twice? At least double check your post
