I have a problem that I need some clarification about. I originally got accepted to one school (school 1) and I went through all the motions of going to that school (signed up for an email account, got a school ID, signed up for list servers, graduate housing etc). But recently I got a call from an admin at another school (school 2) saying that I have a good chance of getting accepted there. I want to go to school 2, but what should I do about school 1? What is the etiquette? Is it a bad thing to withdraw my place in class just a month or so before class is suppose to start? Thanks for the assistance.

if I understand you correctly, you haven't been offered admission YET at school 2. So for now, do nothing, don't withdraw from school 1 unless you have a written offer from school 2.

Once you have an offer from school 2 (and I hope you get it), you can withdraw from school 1. While I'm sure they won't be happy about it, it is completely understandable. Even this time of year there is movement on waitlists and schools understand that it is part of the admissions process.

GOOD LUCK

Do not withdraw or commit to any school until you are sure of where you want to go. I had 3 acceptances and I thought I was pretty set on going to my state school for financial reasons. Surprisingly, I got a better financial aid package from a private school which otherwise, would have cost considerably more. Thank god I did not withdraw from the private school early.

Moving to Pre-allo as this is a pre-matriculation problem and off-topic for allopathic forum. Allopathic students may follow and post there.

It would be really great if you get an acceptance at school 2... IF being the key word. If you get accepted to school 2 then withdraw from school 1, if you don't then just go to school 1. ONLY WITHDRAW ONCE YOU RECIEVE A WRITTEN CONFORMATION OF BEING ACCEPTED TO SCHOOL 2. It would suck if you withdraw early and then find out you really didn't get accepted to school 2.

I hope you get in (btw, thanks for not saying which schools).

thanks for the responses. I have yet to get into school 2 but I just wasnt sure if withdrawing from school 1 (after a school 2 acceptance of course) so late was appropriate. But I guess it should be, they cant force me to go to that school, right?

Don't worry about hurting school 1's feelings. They will find someone to take your place, even if you withdraw two days before classes start. And think about how happy you will make that person!

People accept spots off of waitlists up to the day before school. I have heard far too many anecdotes about this to think it is a rare occurrence. Odds are, if you have any friends in MS1, they will know at least one person this happened too. Good luck everybody.

P.S. Do not do anything as a favor to your schools that could result in you not getting in anywhere this year and being blacklisted next year. (That's what would happen if you turned down one school in hopes of an offer that never materializes.) Schools can deal, and there is always someone ready to fill your spot, even in August.
