Hi everyone. I'm in a dilemma and would like your opinions.
I got accepted into a DO school however i'm on a "pending acceptance list" meaning they had accepted too many students this year and so i'm basically waiting for someone to drop. However, if i do not get in this year, I would be automatically be put into their class next year without another application. I hate the idea that I might have to move to another state within a day because I can get accepted anytime between now and the first day of school.
What I kind of want to do is to let admissions know that I rather just get accepted next year so I dont have to go through the hassle of moving so last minute and being underprepared. Secondly, If am accepted next year instead, I think I want another shot at other schools again. My question is, if i reapply to schools while having that A for next year, would the other MD/DO schools know that I already have an A? Would it look bad?
I also just had another DO interview today (yes very last minute) but after doing it and them giving me info about the school, I rather go to the school that I got accepted into. Should i email them post interview that I would like to withdraw before I get the results? If i get an A wouldnt it look bad that I didnt take it for this year?
Sorry that was alot of info but I would just like some insight!

If you want to just take the acceptance next year, I'm sure they'll be happy to accommodate that.

This question of reapplying while on a deferral comes up at least a couple of times a year. You will not be allowed to as you will sign a contract stating that you won't reapply while on deferral, and if (when) you're found out you'll get kicked out of the school you've already been accepted to. No doubt it would be nice to get into a "better" school, but don't lose out on your one acceptance because you got greedy.

What if I didnt defer but they don’t have enough space and I matriculate next year. Would that still count? And reapplying to more schools in the meantime will cause me to lose that A?

It doesn't matter what they call it, it is a deferral.

Yes.

Ooooohhh! Some Admissions Dean is going to get fired!

MD schools have no idea what's going on in the DO world, unless they specifically ask if you've been accepted in the secondary or at interviews.

Dos schools do not talk to each other, so they won't know either.

If this is a for-profit or a brand new school, then ask the Admissions Dean if you can be noted as to be wanting to matriculate in 2025.

A year of lost physician income is ~$250-750k+. You don’t want to wait a year for no reason. It would be different if you had some compelling reason to want to wait a year even if you were just not ready, wanted to travel, had a high paying job and wanted to bank more $$, etc.

If I have no choice and they do accept me next year, would it be wrong for me to apply to more schools while i wait to matriculate?

In the grand scheme of things, one year of income wont affect my whole entire life i feel

If you have no choice, you have no choice. If you get in this year, pack your crap and jump in the car. That happened to one of my anatomy lab partners btw. He was in at another school, his state school, and on the waitlist at this one. He called the Dean a few days before he was supposed to start to see if there was any last minute opening as the school was his first choice, and the dean pretty much said, “actually yes, we weren’t going to call you because we thought you’d probably rather be at your state university school, we will see you Monday at orientation.” And I’m sure that someone else at the other school got a call from that dean asking can you be here next week?
