I am making plans to go abroad during the application process,(next cycle). I am looking at a period from July to September.
Do you think I'll be taking a risk of missing out on some correspondence with med schools? ( I am not taking August MCAT, not doing early admission). Do you receive important mail during this period that would be time sensitive? Can I do most of it by e-mail?
For those of you who applied this year, do you think it's doable ?
😕

Thanks for your suggestions!

As long as you have internet access, you should be ok. Most secondaries are e-mailed (although not all). Just make sure you take care of your LORS, transcripts, and send in your AMCAS b/f you leave. As long as you are back in time to go on September interviews, there shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck 🙂

internet will be absolutely clutch, most applications are recieved and can be sent via email. but you will still need somebody in the states to open and read (and forward if necessary) any snail mail correspondence, and you will need to snail mail some applications when done (use the fastest, most secured/insured carrier available). i'm applying right now, and i was in ireland for most of july-august. it is possible, but be warned that these applications will take up lots of your time while abroad, making it a less enjoyable experience. i was going to stay in galway till november, but then i got an interview for october 8th (still happy about that though), and i wasn't doing anything in ireland except working to make money and working on my applications, so i came back to the states.

keep in mind though, i applied to MSTP programs, which just about tripples the number of essays required. your work load will depend on where/how many schools you applied to. if i could do it all over again, i would have gone to ireland in late january or february, when everything is done and i'm just waiting on acceptances (i may still do that since i had to cut my time in ireland short).

good luck with whatever you decide. it's a rollercoster ride, but it should end in a good place.
