2 months vacation?
Started by shildebrecht
being unemployed allows you a year round vacation package
Sure you can.
That is easily negotiable.
Two months spread out over a year? Sure. Two months in one stretch? Not easy, unless you have either a very large (and accommodating) group, perhaps academics, or locum tenens.shildebrecht said:Can anesthesiologists set up their practice/schedule in such a way to take two months off over a twelve month period?

NOt necessarily true!
I think this would be the minimum vacation package. Of the two big private groups in my city, one offers 15 weeks and the other 12 weeks.
I recall jetproppilot mentioning he gets ~12-14 weeks.
Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less than 10 weeks vacation per year. My philosophy is that you work hard so you can go on vacation.

Really?!
Growing up everyone I knew got two weeks of vacation a year. Is this amount of time off common in Anesthesiology?
I would think that most other medical specialties would not make it possible to have this much vacation time due to the continuity of patient care and other things. Does anyone know of other specialties where you can take this much time off?
Thanks for everyone's input so far.

Where I went to medical school the large private anes group in town which is inbred with the res program said 4-12 weeks off is normal, but that more weeks off equals less pay.
Partners were making over $500k a year.
1st year out of res, in the 200s.

Unless you are in a large group where your partners can cover your patients or you are willing to pay for locums, it is difficult to take this much time off in specialties that are not "consultants".
I think lots of vacation time is common in anesthesiology, radiology, and pathology.
And I agree with neutropenic. The group that offers 15 weeks of vacation pays less than the group that offers 12 weeks. In fact, the group sells itself as the "family friendly group" because it offers so much vacation time and their call is limited to two full weeks out of the year. They recruit well but do lose a lot of candidates to other groups that pay better. It all comes down to your priorities.

Unfortunately, many groups like that do not advertise when they need new folks. They go with people they know already.

And that, folks, is the reason you have to be cool to everyone you meet. You don't have to spend your time trying to impress/like everyone, but if you're a good dude, it'll show.
BTW mil, nice new avatar. You're pulling some serious lean in that shot.

Just came back from Deal's Gap (aka Dragon) today. Now, those are CORNERS.
lvspro...do you have a bike? and where are you located?
You should run the Dragon if you have the chance.
Our program hired some locums people due to faculty shortage for a while. Some of these locums folks were partners in groups that had too much vacation time. It ranged from 12-17 wks. One guy was making 450K and I asked why would he do locums in his vacation time? His reply "My wife needs to go on a luxury cruise with her relatives and I am paying for all of 'em."
