usnews.com.... the subscription you buy also gets you all of the other rankings, but these rankings are the result of a "peer assessment survey" of which the return rate was only 57%, and only fully accredited schools as of fall 2004 are included. It costs 15 bucks.

i also just got an email saying that new rankings are coming out april 1.

Wow, where is UCSD in this ranking? For their ultra-competitive admission process, I couldn't believe their place to be as low as their admission rate.

What factors are these schools ranked on?

To be honest, don't pay much heed to these ratings. Choose a school which is best for you. These ratings are not reliable.

I agree....but if you really want to know....US news is having a sale...half the price (good until the end of march).

I think it lists most programs that have been around for a long time....except UCSD made the list somehow (tied for #54 with butler, temple, and toledo). There is definetly more than 54 pharmd schools in the US than the ones that are "ranked."

i thought only accredited schools were ranked in the us news report...? i remember hearing the assistant dean say that ucsd was aiming for a spot in the top ten...

Oh Im not payin attention to the ranking, lol none of those schools would ever be on my list, but I still want to know what factors determine who's ranked and who's not... anyone know?

The US News Reports base the rankings on perceptions of the school in a survey.

I thought it all had to do with NIH funding.

the article about how the rankings were compiled says...
"Respondents rated the acedemic quality of programs on a 5-point scale: outstanding (5)... to marginal (1) based on their assessment of the curriculum, faculty, and graduates...Scores for each school were determined by computing a trimmed mean of the ratings off all the respondents who rated that school"

ya..ucsd was near the bottom.

i dont think it matters though. you'll still get a job.

There is a page mistaken by many that rates schools by NIH funding, but that is merely a list of who receives the most funding and is in the order from most to least. This just rates who receives the most funds from the NIH. There are many other sources of funding and some schools, very little research is done; thus, small amounts of funds are disbursed to the school. Therefore, this is not an effective ranking system.

The US News Report ranks by the perceptions of the school via survey methodology as described above, which refers to the quality of the components of the school.

There is a report published in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy in the September 2002 issue titled Ranking of US pharmacy schools based on perception, funding, and publications. The authors combined the US News Report rankings, NIH funding rankings, and publication rates of faculty in the school into an overall ranking system.

I heard the UCSD staff is pretty much made up of people from UCSF or UCSF staff. I don't know how accurate or true that is, but it's what I've heard.

Just to add to the list:

21. Virginia Commonwealth University
22. University of Georgia
23. University of Colorado, University of Pittsburgh

Although there are I think ~90 (?) schools, rank #23 is where the list stops in the US News & World Report (2006 Edition) "America's Best Graduate Schools." That darned thing cost $10.00 at Barnes & Noble. Then after my interview at USC during the Q&A with the P4s, I regreted buying the magazine and wasting the money because they let us know that the numbers don't say anything about how good a school is.

a lot of schools chose not to participate in this survey as they felt the methodology was flawed
