FREE National Conference for MD/PhDs in the Social
Sciences and Humanities

Are you a doctor or a medical student?
Are you working on, have you worked on, or will you
undertake a Ph.D. in the social sciences or
humanities?

This spring, Bay Area (California) MD/PhD candidates
and graduates in the humanities and the social
sciences are pleased to be hosting a NATION-WIDE
gathering for social science and humanities MD/PhD
students and graduates.

Co-sponsored by:

UCSF Department of Anthropology, History and Social
Medicine
UCSF Medical Scientist Training Program
UCSF Graduate Division
UCSF Center for Health and Community
UC Berkeley Office for History of Science and
Technology
UC Berkeley Center for Medicine, the Humanities and
Law
Stanford Univ. Department of Psychiatry
Univ. of Illinois UC Medical Scholars Program
and likely others.

We welcome students, faculty, and graduates from all
disciplines -- from economics to art. Our goal is to
bring together motivated, curious, and innovative
individuals who have carved a path in what is not
always easy terrain. By bridging the gap between
medical science and patient care through our interests
in the humanities and social sciences, we seek to
improve the well-being of our patients and the climate
of medicine, and to work towards a more just and
equitable society.

Our conference will be a forum for the presentation
and discussion of research projects as well as a
spring-board for further alliances between MD/PhDs
across the country.

The conference will take place on May 14, 2005, in San
Francisco, California. The program will consist of:

(1) Talks by two keynote speakers: Leon Eisenberg --
Emeritus Professor and former Chair of Social Medicine
at Harvard; Rafael Campo - award-winning poet and
practicing physician at Harvard.
(2) Break-out sessions to bring together those of us
working on related issues and to serve as starting
points for continued collaboration;
(3) A career panel of MD/PhDs, who will introduce
students to the many potential pathways available to
individuals with a dual degree

If you are interested in participating, please reply
to [email protected] and
include:

(1) Your PhD discipline;
(2) Your institution;
(3) A brief description of your research interests
(from 3 to 5 sentences) so that we can form
appropriate interdisciplinary break-out sessions;
(4) How to contact you.

Everyone will participate in break-out sessions: if
you need proof of being accepted to the conference so
that you can apply for travel funds, we will gladly
provide a letter of acceptance.

It has been ten years since MD/PhD students in the
social sciences and humanities last held a nationwide
conference. We have created a format that maximizes
opportunities to interact, to form a community of
thinkers that has long been lacking.

Please join us in making this conference a grand and
fruitful experience. We look forward to seeing you in
the beautiful San Francisco bay area in May!

For logistical questions please e-mail Clair Dunne at
[email protected].

Eagerly,

The Conference Committee
