2006 Non-Trad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Accepted to UNECOM! And in the "hold for further action" pile post-interview at VCU (which is good 'cuz I'm not rejected after the committee meeting).

So no matter what happens with the 8 schools i'm waiting to hear from post-secondary, I'm IN.... 😀 😀 😀

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! 😀 😀 😀 It must feel good to know you're going somewhere next fall!!!!!

That's excellent, ShyRem! Hopefully, it's the first of many acceptances for you and the rest of the non-trad team!

And (possibly) congratulations to you, too, for any interviews you've (possibly not) had; I hope there (isn't) some great news (not) waiting for you next week (or not)! 🙂

lmao, ok, ok, you win! Thank you (or not) for the good (or bad) luck wishes, and I will post an update here next Saturday (the 22nd). The cat is rapidly clawing its way out of the bag anyway. 😛

LOL. I'm sure we're all saving up our resentment for the 22nd. 😉 Seriously though, you're in as good as position as anyone I've seen, traditional or otherwise. I know we're all nervous for answers, but I know a good bet when I see one.

In other news, I went to Wake Forest yesterday and was really impressed. What a great school, with both excellent clinical education and a nice big research burdget. Winston-Salem is also beautiful.

Thanks. 😳 You seem to be in pretty good shape yourself. I'm glad that your interviews are going well, and I promise that I *won't* save any resentment for the 22nd, or any other day. 😉

Just three more days till the fifteenth. :wow: (I love that smiley, and I don't get to use it nearly often enough. )

Hi all,

I'm a new non-trad and feeling way behind the 8-ball. Since I didn't take my 1st MCAT until this August and I knew the scores wouldn't be posted until this week, my AMCAS didn't go out until 9/19 and at that it is still waiting to be certified but all my transcripts are in so now I am just playing the waiting game.

Here's my scoop

AMCAS Applied: University of Arizona, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, George Washington, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and Wayne State.

Secondaries:
Received: GW, JHU
Sent Out: GW
Awaiting Response: UA, UMich, UMD, GU & Wayne

Interviews: None Yet

Acceptances: Obviously too early to say since my MCATs haven't even been posted yet!

I am so excited to have found all of you non-trads and I look forward to hearing lots of good news from everyone. Best of luck!

Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated as I am so dang new to this thing!

Sounds like you're a Mich. resident, no?

Actually no, I am currently an AZ resident but originally from the MD-DC metro area. I have limited my apps to AZ (we currently own a home here), Michigan (a job possibility exists for my hubby in detroit) and MD-DC (it will always be home to me, all of our family is there and that would be a huge help for having support for my 3 yr old daughter, and there is a 2nd job possibility for my hubby in Baltimore). Basically, my hubby is in the federal govnm't as a special agent and trying to get out of his current gig (Customs & Border Protection) at the same time I am applying to med school so things are a little complicated. I don't want to apply to schools where he can't have a job, and I don't want to get transfered to a new location where I don't have acceptance to med school. So right about now I am hoping I can get an offer from at least 1 school in each of the 3 geographic regions I am applying so as to avoid anyone having to sacrifice their dream (him getting out of CBP and me becoming an MD) when word starts rolling in over the next 9 months! I've never wanted anything so much in my entire life (with the exception of when I was waiting to set a date to marry my current hubby!), it has taken me so long to get to this point to know that this is what I am really meant to do, I would hate to not have the opportunity to see it through!

I just got my August MCAT scores. I improved from a 25R in April to a 28O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so *&#%ing elated right now. 😀 😀 😀 😀

(Just thought I'd share....) =]

Congrats!!!! Reading these posts are giving me flashbacks to waiting for that Thx status page to update in april... Here's to never seeing that thing again, Lanzarlaluna!

Hey there, I just got my MCATs too, also scoring a 28O. This being my first go round at this, is this score going to be decent enough to get me in at some of my schools?? I am terrified because the lowest average for 2004 accepted matriculants for the schools I have applied for was 29P and highest a 35Q. I think because my lowest score was an 8 in PS (not a huge surprise but I would have loved a 9 or 10) I may still have a chance at most schools right? I didn't have anything that screams I am a big dummy I don't think. Or should I contact Kaplan and repeat my course now and start prepping for April even though my AMCAS is already in for this year????? Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats on your scores, guys. 🙂 I remember logging in and reloading the THx site obsessively four months ago....shudder. It must be a relief to have them!

Your scores are not incredible, but they should definitely open some doors. It'll be up to you guys as to whether you should be satisfied and not take yourself through that hell again, or whether you honestly think you can do *significantly* better. If you're only looking at a couple of points, I don't know how beneficial it would be to retake. Just my opinion, though.

OUCH!! I thought the nontrad thread was usually supportive. 😕

Sorry, I'm not being discouraging, I don't think. I typically reserve words like "incredible" for extremely high scores. 27-30 is not extremely high. It is, however, quite respectable, and certainly good enough if paired with a solid GPA. That's all. 🙂

I did manage two interviews with a 25 April MCAT and 3.89 GPA, so I think improving to a 28 will get me a few more interviews. If not, well, there's always next year. 🙂

Blee! I just looked at your mdapp file - how did you study for the Mcat to do so well!?!🙂
I started to answer you, but then my post turned into a really long and winding post. let's try again.

First, there's someone else here whose incredible MCAT score definitely puts her in a good position to dole out advice. You may already know who this person is...if not, I'm sure you'll know soon. 😉

But back to me. I started to study in late January. My prep consisted mostly of practice tests, taken at least once every weekend under standard or faster conditions (no waiting until time limit is done before moving on, no full one-hour break). The rest of my time during the week was spent on review, although almost all of that was bio -- my weakest topic by far. My first practice test score was 31.

You know, I have a little more to say about this. I think I'll start a new thread in a bit.

Sorry- I don't want to turn this thread into a "how to study for the MCAT" thread 😉

You can PM me if you want - I'm just curious 🙂

Well, I just got the best news (for me) so far of this year 😀

Q, we're 1 of 2 for me so far 👍

Come see my party post in military medicine if you want 😀 😀 😀

Moose! I knew you'd do it! 👍 If I don't go to med school, I will become Madame Q, seer and prognosticator. :hardy: in the nontrad forum; chocolate Bailey's and Godiva truffles for all. 😀

Megboo: Go to the MCAT forum, and you will see a sticky there entitled "30+ MCAT study habits." There are tips for studying by high-scoring MCAT-takers from the past few years. You can also check out the MCAT Study Questions subforum for more tips on studying for the MCAT.

Lanzarlaluna, congrats on raising your MCAT. 🙂 BTW, I like your userID.

Hell yeah, Moose. 😀 Way to go! So are you definitely going to USUHS? If my wife did not promise to kill me for thinking about military medicine, I would've applied for sure.

Well, I have a feeling I'm going to be a better prognosticator than you on one important prediction, but we'll see.... 😀

If the alcohol doesn't give me a buzz, the sugar high will :meanie:

I love Bethesda and I love USUHS. I still have apps out and interviews scheduled, so I don't want to be rash.

Your wife has your best interests at heart 👍

I'm in at UofM!!! 😀 I interviewed on Friday & found out just after midnight! 👍

It was only 10 hours from the time I walked out of the admissions office until I found out I was accepted. I can't describe how good it feels! 😀

Well, I don't have to wait until next week for UF's letter any more, b/c they called me this morning. So far, I have heard from UF, USF, and U. Mich. I can't even BELIEVE that all of the admissions staffs are in their offices today contacting students. U. Mich. called me last night at almost 1AM!!! I think all three of those schools are incredibly awesome, and my head is just spinning right now.

Moose, I will let you know as soon as I hear anything else. Congrats to everyone who has heard good news, and I hope the rest of you do soon too! Sail, I'm glad you're not hung over; I was worried about you. 😉 I think you must have set a record for the fastest post-interview acceptance ever. 👍

Yes, I'm suprised at how much the adcoms are showing folks a little "personal" love! 👍

Congrats to Moose on USUHS! Oh how I sometimes wish Navy medicine was in my future! 🙁

I have a little news to share, too. 🙂

I called EVMS on 9/29 and discovered that I'll be receiving an acceptance.

I also got VCU's status update email today, and discovered that I've been accepted there as well.

HELL YEAH!!!

See? We old folks can be good applicants, too. 😀 Great news, everybody! :clappy:

And for those of you who didn't get good news today, remember: It's day one of acceptance notices. You've got MONTHS before schools fill their classes, so don't worry!

Hey Blee & other non-trads,

I finally added my profile to MD Applicants, to see if you could give me a better idea how I stand now that you have more info on my background!

Any feedback greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks all!

Well, I'm not an adcom member, but your stats are certainly promising. Like I said before, your MCAT score won't help you, but you have a strong track record of academic achievement and you have a great list of ECs. There's no reason why you shouldn't continue applying this year.

😀 Blee, Q, SailCrazy... congratulations on your well-deserved acceptances!!

Go non-trads!!! 😍

As for me, I got tired of waiting for my snail mail from UWisc and went out on a limb and called them... and found out that I got in! 😀
