I have already started playing this card.... "Who me? Apply to OMFS? No, I was just missing fall semester to visit family all over the country... I had a bunch of skymiles left over." :D

If I don't match, then I would blame everything on TX OMS, OMSRES, esclavo, OMFSCardsFan, Jediwendell, toofache32, Bifid Uvula, and north2southOMFS for their poor poor guidance and their constant would then be lies about how to get in!

If I do match, then all over them will receive a piece of Bazooka gum (not the ABC kind) from me for their constant entertainment!

If ever we have led you astray, the "freakin' witcha" value has been high. But my advise to any of you, if you don't get in, is to come here as an intern and "laugh and play with Esclavo". He is nice, sincere, very nurturing, and an absolute role model. Then together we could work the first year from above and below until he cried. If he quit, maybe you could have his hot seat. What better opportunity/environment could you ask for? Be looking for our advertisement on the AAOMS website.

You should add OMFSRES to that list....based on his current performance he'll be looking for another spot somewhere.

Fortunately, you don't need the drive that much after dental school.

medschool does suck. Just took USMLE step 2 today....freaking hard a hell. Hopefully i pass or else i really don't know how to find the motivation to study again. (not that i studied much this time around)

Tristan, I thought was another dude, since it's a dude's name! Besides, we were all using SDN Username, who told you to throw their real names out there, huh fool? Also, I didn't know "Tristen" was Gatorette until this weekend anyways.

Man, I just finished all my paperwork and sent them back last week. Hopefully everything is set.

If you are at Minnesota go schedule a personal meeting with Dr. Swift through his secretary. Get his input on your CV and potential. He helped me alot and gave me invaluable advice. It wasn't all pain free but it was extremely accurate.

Class of 2008 = DS3?

Are you planning on repeating a year between now and graduation? ;)

Eyeforstars:

First of all, if you're in Class of 2008, then you're a D2, period! You won't be a D3 until you finish this semester in couple of months.

Secondly, if you're interested in OMFS, then like Esclavo said, go up to the 7th floor of Moos Towers and shadow and make yourself known. Meeting with Dr. Swift may be a bit intimidating for a D2, but he's a great guy under that stern face.

Want some DOs & DON'Ts for a D2 who's interested in OMFS?

Here's my list:

DOs:
1) get at least a 90 on NBDE Part 1 this summer
2) shadow OMFS department and meet residents and faculty members
3) start looking into OMFS externships for the upcoming summer (everyone that I know who did an externship between their 2nd & 3rd year of dental school have gotten in somewhere in their first try along with many other factors)
4) continue to get "A"s in all your final exams for this semester or highest you can get
5) read SDN threads about OMFS (there are a lot of them)

DON'Ts:
1) slack on your studies for NBDE Part 1
2) go to Sally's every Thursday night
3) go and talk with Dr. Swift right now if your numbers (class ranking) are low, you won't like what you hear...wait to introduce yourself when you have respectable numbers
4) shy away from externships this upcoming summer

That's all I can think up right now for a D2, more will be added by others I'm sure. Good luck.

I started externing in the summer between DS2 and DS3. I didnt know much about oral surgery (funny.......I still dont) and I didnt know what I was supposed to do at the externship, so I guess in hindsight, it did hurt my chance at that program.

Just make sure you know about the field when you apply to externships. Also, dont kiss @ss and dont be a tool.

It must be you then, because I didn't know squat about OMFS (and I also still don't) during my 1st externship either, but the residents took me in and taught me a whole lot. Now, those same residents who taught me during my first externship will be my Chiefs! My felt that my first externship definitely helped me in my application process.

Bottom line, look what you did and what I did? We both did an externship between our 2nd & 3rd year, both got in first try. Just saying including you now, everyone I know or heard of doing an externship between their 2nd and 3rd year have gotten in. Just an interesting fact, that all.

I think the main difference was that you went to a place where the residents encourage you to do things. I went to a place where they encouraged me to observe even simple extractions because they didnt have many things even for the residents. Also, when I was there, I just wanted to kill myself because the program just wasnt what I had expected. Residents were @sses, attending were so full of themselves, etc. Of course, it could have all been me.

Thanks for the tips Yah-E
ill make sure i follow them.
Well for those who dont know about PASS it is ( program for advanced standing students) its the programs first year in UMN so many might not know about it.
Iam a foreign Dental grad. going into D3 on may 22
My part 1 is 90
gpa of 3.78
around 1yr experience of voluntary work with oral surgery faculty at U of DM
and around the same time at private practices.
just wondering Yah-E, did u happen to do ur externship from UMN?
and how should i go about arranging mine, i have heard in the fall and winter there are better chances, and where all should i apply to?
I have a passion for OMS.
cheers.....

Can you explain more about PASS? I'm still not sure what it is for.

Thanks doggie, but what do u mean when you say dont be a tool, does that mean during externships they try using you, how? :(

In short the program is to make foreign grads. go thru D3 and D4 so that the minimum requirements of ADA are met for licensure, for foreign trained dentists

You are right about PASS for foreign trained dentists but I think what Doggie is asking about is Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS).

"This service is available to all individuals applying to postdoctoral dental education programs participating in the application service. PASS simplifies the application process by providing on standardized format, relieving applicants of the need to complete multiple applications. Dental programs benefit by receiving uniform information on all applicants."

I hope it helps,

rahmed

Rahmed, Doggie is already an OMFS resident which means he has gone through ADEA's PASS!

Eyesforstar's PASS program is a completely different thing that Doggie was asking about.

Now Eyeforstars, if you don't have at least a "green card", then you may run into a lot of road blocks in OMFS application as most of them requires at least a "Green Card" for consideration. OMFS applications tend to cause more headaches for Foreign Dentists that wants to be OMFSs in the U.S.

I say go talk to Dr. Swift after you've finished your first semester in 3rd year there at Minnesota. I now see what you're saying, you will be apart of Class of 2008 and GOING TO BE a D3! We thought you're already a dental student.

Yes, I did do an externship with Univ. of MN for 3 weeks. But back when I did it, there was an externship program. I guess now, the OMFS program at Minnesota eliminated their externship program.

Just so you know, even if there was an externship program available at Minnesota today, by you spending time there, it's not an externship! I tell dental students this all the time, if you hang out at your own school's OMFS program, it's not an "externship", it's simply volunteering. An official externship is when you rotate off site to another campus or program other than your own.

If I counted the amount of time that I hung around my own school's OMFS and counted them as externships, then I've would had over 8 or 9 months total worth of externships! I don't care if you took call, attend grand rounds, scrubed in OR cases, or danced naked at your own school's OMFS, that is not an externship!

Externship = apply and rotate off site!

Kinda coincidental how after you were done with the externship, they eliminated it completely.

Yes Yah-E i am a permanent Resident and hopefully by the time i grad. ill be a citizen.
Now i have a question here, for a student like me how and when should i go for my externships in order to be competitive in 2008, do u think after starting in May i should or can right away apply for externships so as to get one in August break or wait till winter

Your first externship period could be during your winter break 2006 - 2007. You can squeeze in a 2-week or a 3-week externship during Christmas/Winter break. You may have to sacrafice your vacation time with your family and friends and spend the holidays taking calls and pull teeth.

Your second opportunity is during your Spring Break 2007, squeeze in another 2-week here.

Your last and third opportunity is during your summer between your 3rd and 4th year where you can do another 3-week somewhere.

You can apply for one this summer because you're not officially a dental student yet until August when you start.

Rahmed, Doggie is already an OMFS resident which means he has gone through ADEA's PASS!

Eyesforstar's PASS program is a completely different thing that Doggie was asking about........

Thanks Yah-E....My apologies to eyesforstar and Doggie.......I didn't read the earlier posts.
