Ugh, me too! I've been complete since 9/1! And nothing! Still just the same complete message...

Maybe I'll see you there 👍 . I hate this waiting game. When did you interview? I interviewed October 12th. Missed 10/15 cuttoff by - this much. Damn.
I interviewed 9/26. Absolutely loved the school, had a good interview. I'm really (REALLY) hoping for an acceptance 12/15. And not just 'cuz it's my only interview. The only school I'd take over VCU is my state school (and mainly for the cheaper tuition in-state).

I was complete for 1.5 month before I got a vague update and interview a day later. I wrote off the school already by that time. It's all very mysterious. You'll get something soon.

Someone please help...

Based on the way VCU does admissions, is it better to pick an earlier date for an interview (say, end of November) or would I be severely disadvantaged to interview in January?

I think they are all out of November.

take the earliest one you can get. and good luck! 🙂 c_C

I thought I read from a previous poster who talked to admissions and they said that the only advantage of an early interview is that you got one before they ran out. However, after getting one it does not matter when you do it?

VCU sends offers by their scoring system. Each candidate is assigned a priority score from 1-5 (1 being highest)... scored to determine if you get a secondary, scored to determine interview. Then after the interview, your interviewer presents you to the adcom board. All your "hard stats" are put up on a screen for everyone to see and then the discussion begins. All the adcoms score you and the average of that score is put into the computer. After the adom meeting, your file is never discussed again. You are an AMCAS and priority score number (along with a state of residence). If you don't get an offer 10/15, your score is still in the file and new interviewees are added to it. So interviewing early doesn't necessarily give you an advantage at VCU.

Acceptances are given out based on priority score. So when the adcom meets before the acceptance date, they say "accept this many people with a score above this". The admissions dean makes sure the % of instate/oos are about right and the offers go out. At no time does VCU have more than 184 acceptances out - and they don't have all 184 out until the 3/15 acceptances (I was told by Dr. H they do about 20 10/15, 80-90 12/15, 40 1/30, and 40 3/15). So if you score well, you will make the cut and get an offer. If you don't score well, you won't make the cut.

At least this is how Dr. H explained it when I interviewed there. Hope this helps.

very helpful info shyrem. thanks.

what about if i send a letter of interest? will that boost my priority score?

also, based on the priority score, it seems that very competite applicants will interview first. then as the months go by, the less competitive applicants like me will interview.

also, do u know how many ppl get on the interview potential list? i know about 2500 get secondaries, but do u know how many from there get interviews??? because i know for a fact that not everyone who gets that vague status is interviewed.

They interview about 600 people each year. The different priority scores seem to get the different vague messages; I've seen about 3 of them floating around. A letter of interest I don't know if would change your score or not - she didn't say how the scores were figured in detail. I know your background, your determination, your grades, your ECs and your PS all figure into it. She didn't say anything about LOIs.

I know it's not so much about your raw numbers with VCU. I have a 3.23 overall GPA and a 29 MCAT and never got a vague message - I went from "under review" to "please schedule an interview". But I do have a TON of medical experience, a kick-ass PS, and if they just looked at my recent grades (and ignored the 20 year old mistakes) my GPA would have been 3.6 or so taking 21 credits a semester. My interviewer even commented on the difficulty of my course schedule. So competitiveness is not so numbers-driven at VCU.

Dr. H said they interview a max of 675 people and give 300 acceptances to fill the class of 184. My stats were very average and I was still able to interview recently. Good luck.

wee i predict a mass countdown on this thread in approximately 5 weeks. 😀

I was told that once your score is completed THAT IS IT. No matter what you do, call, write, or say it is final and that will not change. It kind of sucks because if you are on the border, you won't be able to push yourself over with new things (grades, EC, etc.) but it could be good also because once they have made their decision, it is final. Yes, mass countdown in 5 weeks.

I'm not sure about priority interviewing because I am a weak applicant and I interviewed on October 12. So I don't know. Does anybody know??? 😕

are u really a weak applicant?

if you're URM or disadvantaged, you are already at an advantage to begin with.

I had my interview during the week of 10/24 and Dr. Heldberg said they were way behind, and a decision concerning our applications would be made between three and four weeks later. Well, I got put on hold for later action this past Wednesday so they appear to be picking up the pace a little.

Either way, December 15th is just a little over a month away. Good luck to those waiting.

Hi guys, I'm OOS and I'll interview at VCU on Nov 15th. Do you know if I am at a big disadvantage by interviewing so late?(funny how it sounds, last year my first one was late january 🙄 ) Do you also know if I would be in the 12/15 batch of acceptances/WL/rejections?
Thanks!

Tristy, since VCU is semi-rolling, no one is going to get accepted until 12/15.
As for whether you'll be in that batch or not, that's not up to us. Depends on how fast they're getting through reviewing interviews, whether your interviewer is available during review sessions, etc. I think you might be, but it seems they're running about 3 weeks behind right now, and there's thanksgiving break in between your interview and the next acceptance date. Could be close.

Jeezzzz.....with my luck then I probably end up in the next batch 😉 What makes me nervous is that it took them so long to offer me an interview (like over 2 months after I was complete). Thanks for the info though, I'm really excited about my interview 😀

2 months eh? I was complete for more than 3 months and have been in that vague status hold like forever!!!

Sorry to hear that 🙁 didn't mean to sound arrogant or anything....Don't loose hope though :luck: :luck: :luck:

does anyone remember the numbers they gave us right after we got the secondary about how many 2ndaries they gave out and then how many they interviewed? i guess i know that they interview 600 so i'm just asking for how many secondaries they give out. wow i used way too many words to ask that.
-mota

damota, i believe they send out secondaries to only 2500.

probably from there, i believe maybe only about 2000-2200 actually complete it within 30 days or decide to submit it.

damota, did u get an interview already, or do u still have that vague status like me?

4800 applicants
2400 receive secondaries
1500 deemed acceptable for interviews
675 receive interviews
300 offers are made
184 matriculate

According to US News... 384 offers were made, not 300?! Are we thinking of different numbers?

no interview. no vague status either. still just "complete", for over 5 weeks now.

Well according to a MCV/VCU Adcom member, 300 offers were made for last year. I don't know about you but I think the actual school is a more reliable source then US News. Besides, they will go through all those numbers during the info session w/ Dr. H.

Thanks for the info... I just wasn't sure where you got those numbers from but now I know. Sorry if I sound like I was questioning you. And yes I agree that the school is a better source than US News... althought I thought the schools do fill them out and return it to them?

Don't worry about it! Just focus on your interview and good luck!

bumping so this thread stays on the first page 🙂

VCU's taking way too long to review my app.

Does anyone know if Dr.H has a better guess on when this year's December mailing of offers will take place? It's getting close to count-down time 🙂

any advice on hotels?

I got a VCU invite yesterday! Whoo! I wasn't expecting it, but I'm so happy. The earliest date was in late Feb.

Anyone know where I can find threads about VCU interviews, and people's opinion of the school. I know the search fct is disabled.

Congrats Nas! Good luck. My personal experience was very laid back, and went quite well. (we'll see how well after Dec. 15....)

are there any hotels that provide shuttles from airport and also to med school? that'd be badass...

Ok, after about 4 months of reading all of your posts, I finally decided to join. So, here is my first post...

I've been complete at VCU for about a month now and I haven't received any of the vague messages, so I was wondering how long it took to get invites for those of you who went from complete to interview. I know, a month wait isn't that long compared to other schools, but I'm really hoping for an interview.

Thanks

i stayed at commonwealth suites, no shuttle, but its around the corner from 1101 marshall.

chances are you'll find someone interviewing with you at that hotel, everyone from out of town seems to stay there. its nice and really cheap (but they stick you with 8bucks for internet and 9bucks for parking)
