103.5 hours until 00:00:01 on the 15th. Yes, we're on an hourly count-down now. Sounds better than days.... sounds closer..... closer..... closer..................
Oh I'll be working that night. It could be a bitter night when nothing changes all freakin night. It's 12 est. right? So 10 mst. here right rem? Damn. I am really a freak. Sorry everybody. 😳

I started a thread in the allo forum about the VCU gross lab:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=245758

Here's the one response so far:

It's a lab alright. As labs go, it's pretty labby. Smells like formalin. Not overly spacious but not cramped, by any means. It's in Sanger, which was built in the 1950's, and reflects the juxtaposition of old and new. So there are anatomy texts from the 60's lying around, and ancient instructional materials on the dusty shelves, and.... computer terminals. They keep it secure, which makes it a little difficult to take tour groups. I never saw it before October 2001, when I was an M1.

As a place to receive instruction, it's totally adequate, but not the least bit flashy. It will certainly remind you of the thousands of med students who have gone before you in the past fifty years. I'd never had anatomy before, so it really kicked my arse, but the gross faculty were all tremendous. A couple have gone, but Sholley, Krieg, Simpson and Gudas are all great teachers. Can't comment on the new blood that has arrived in the meantime.

So there's someone's experience from four years ago. No idea what may or may not have changed since then, of course.

I think so, j. But i could be wrong..... I've certainly been wrong before. I'm just hoping it'll be 10pm MST 'cuz I'll be refreshing about every 5 seconds starting 22:00:01. My husband will be accusing me of being OCD again that day.

whats the point of refreshing when they sent out an email telling you your status has changed...is there some sort of lag between the status change and email notification? i thought it was automatic notification...

OCD that day? I'm OCD everyday. Keeps me alive. 😀
I'll be refreshing my e-mail just like you and if it changes, I'm going to have a heart attack, post all of you kisses, and run through the hospital naked. Ok, maybe not that much, but it will be something. 👍

jon, I wouldn't be refreshing email (although there's a slight lag time between actual status change and the email going out)... I'd be refreshing the VCU status page!

Good Luck Everybody On December 15!!!!

Are we supposed to receive some sort of email first telling us that our file has been reviewed, some time prior to Dec 15?

Yes, that is what I received. Haven't received yours yet? That sucks. When did you interview. I interviewed 10/13 and didn't hear from them for about a month. They were really backed up though.

I interviewed on 11/16, but jon0013 interviewed on the same day as me and he got his confirmation email already.

I would contact them. Time is running out. Call them first thing on Monday to make sure. Good luck. 👍

The weird thing is that the lady actually told us not to expect anything on the Dec 15 day, either.

I think I heard it this way. If you are finalized by offer day (dec. 15) then one of three things will happen. One: After review of your app. by the adcom, they give you a score. If this score is too high (bad) they reject you right away (post-interview). Two: After review of your app. by the adcom, they give you a score. If it isn't high enough to reject, they continue to hold you. When D day comes (dec 15), they will offer 80 spots to the top applicants (scores). So you WILL hear from them if you have been accepted or rejected. However, Three: You don't fall into that acceptance zone (top 80) and if this is the case, you will continue to be on hold until the next D day (March 15). Continue to be on hold=hear nothing from VCU. So if you are on hold, you will not hear anything from VCU on Dec. 15. Hope this helps. Good luck to ya. Hope we're luck enough to get in. 👍

And then there were 4. I hope this whole thing isn't like the "honeymoon". Big build up, counting down the days, waiting, anticipating, salivating, then the day comes and...nothing but disapointment and tears 🙁 .

I agree heartily. I've been going through mood swings the past two weeks:
I will get an acceptance! I will! I will!
Oh who the hell am I kidding...there's no chance...
Why not have hope?
Why build up my expectations and then get let down?
I should re-load my e-mail every 5 minutes from the 14th until my acceptance...
I shouldn't even bother checking my e-mail. I know it will be a let down.

You can just imagine this boring and annoying conversation going on in my brain ENDLESSLY. AHHHHHHHHHH!!! 😱

Why didn't they just leave me in the circus? Why? Why?

one clarification from jbone's post is that if you continue to be on hold, you may not need to wait untill march to get an acceptance. my message states that late January is also an acceptance offering date.

so out of the 80 that will be accepted the 15th or so, how many are OOS and how many are VA...is it 40/40?

i have no idea. not sure if anyone knows that one.

i think every time they accept it's 70% VA residents, 30% OOS. i know they maintain a 70/30 ratio for their class as they go. so OOS are at a disadvantage. however, we were told when the waitlist moves, the OOS waitlist moves much faster than the in state one. hope that makes some sense...

I wonder if they have 2 seperate lists for in-state and out-of-state. Or was it 1 big list. Supposing the top 80 are all out of state - then what.

Dr H said she looks at the residency of the folks they're accepting just to make sure they're accepting somewhere around the right %s

uhh, hello people. 3 days. You guys make me sick. 😉

Deux Jours de plus!!! Two More Days!!! Dos Dias Mas!!!

I finally got a countdown post. I guess I can now be thankful that I have finals to study for........who am I kidding, I hate late night cram sessions. 😱

so the office is probably concentrated on who to accept right now and not giving out interviews huh? complete 10 weeks. still "complete and under review". killer.

so you think its really coming out the 15th? did the first rond of acceptances come out Oct 15? what if they come out earlier/later? wouldnt that be a surprise...

First round did come out 10/15. Since the website states 12/15, I would assume that would be the date. At least I hope it is.

Does VCU only notify by status change on one of the dates? No letter?

It seems the adcom must have decided how many to admit from the list yesterday and then it takes em 2 or 3 days to sort out in-state and out of state issues. Otherwise if they already know who they want to admit why do we have to wait 2 more days? Just got a bit anxious this morning so prolly why im sounding a bit inpatient. Anyway we almost there another 2 days wont kill me. Good luck everyone

Why does it seem that the adcom must have decided who to admit yesterday?

Well they had to have since they meet on Mondays.

You eventually get a letter saying the same thing as the website for acceptances.
No letter for interviews.

So, I interviewed on Nov 2nd and today I recieved the status update listed below.

"The Admissions Committee has met to discuss your file. Your application is being placed on hold for action at a later date. We anticipate making offers October 15, December 15, at the end of January, and mid-March."

So does this mean I have already been passed over for December's offers or does it mean that I was just reviewed and offers still haven't gone out yet? Anyone....anyone... anyone?

same deal here... anyone know about this?

Goose, mine says the same - it means that you are waiting for one of the next day - or later - that they release acceptances. Dec 15 is the next one out there. Luck

Tough one. This could just mean that your app was reviewed and you got the same message as everyone else who wasnt accepted on Oct 15 and waiting on Dec 15. Either wait until this thursday to find out for sure or call the admissions office tomorrow. Good luck to everyone waiting for thursday to roll around....damn, out of state odds suck.

Don't say that, Vizsla! It's my only hope for an allo acceptance since my state school is ignoring me. 🙁

What the hell is this crap?! I interviewed on 11/16 and I haven't gotten any sort of an email telling me about a status change saying that my file has been reviewed.

Hey Im out of state too, so Im in the same boat as you guys...I guess Im just not as optimistic...sorry 🙂

oh, and my state school is also ignoring me. lucky for me i can go to the only other school in my state....so Hopkins is pretty easy to get into right??

Actually no. Non-optimisitic people are not allowed here. 👎 😉 Makes us feel even worse about our situation.

i gotta say i got doubts after getting passed over by Rosalind franklin first round today....

hey pewl, did you ever do that survey thing online? dont think it has anything to do with app completion but i was paranoid and completed it pretty soon...keep truckin my friend...

I think out of staters that interviewed already should feel pretty good because they accept almost 2/3rds of the oos people that interview. I feel pretty confident about getting in because of that and because of the early interview.

I just wanted to say that I interviewed at VCU yesterday; it was great and really surpassed my expectations. My interviewer was wonderful and it was probably the best conversation I've had at any med school interview so far (we were scheduled for an hour but went over 90 minutes); the students generally seemed friendly and knowledgeable, and the hospital was very nice (larger than I'd pictured). The other interviewees all seemed pretty cool too. It's also really great how Dr. Heldberg talks to everyone in such detail about the admissions process there; you get the feeling that they have a lot more empathy for us poor nervous applicants than some most other schools. Anyway, VCU definitely went way up in my list. The only downsides are Richmond (which, really, didn't seem that bad) and the fact that I probably won't hear from them until late January.

the thing is, they wont immediately accept those 2/3....they only do it because earlier acceptances turn them down, thus freeing up a spot....so if anything i'd venture to say they accept prob 30% at the beginning and then accept more as spots open up....

i heard that in october they accepted mostly instaters so hopefully OOS will get some love this thursday....

when did u int popbirch???

Actually, according to the stats that Crazy Cav posted for 2004:

Applied/Interviewed/Accepted/Enrolled
Total: 4,406 670 384 184
In-state: 804 337 194 104
Out-of-state: 3,602 333 190 80

It seems that once you get to the interview you have a pretty even chance (57% from each group) of getting accepted whether you're in state or OOS, it's just that your acceptance as an OOS'er may be more likely to come later in the game as they cycle through the waitlist.
