Hey guys just wondering if anyone else who is in highschool, applying for the 6yr program has recieved any news, interviews or any other info.

Hey did anyone hear anything or get anything...the wait is scaring me

Hey,
I'm also applying to the 6 year programs.
I applied to UCC, UCD, Trinity, RCSI Dublin and RCSI Brahmin.
Got rejected from UCC and Trinity.

Still waiting for the others.... taking sooo long!!!😳

Where did you apply?

wow finally...sumone else...lol...
aww...im sorry to hear bout UCC and trinity....i havent heard anything from the places i applied to...which are UCD, RCSI dublin and RCSI bahrain....i hav an 88% average right now...and a tonnes of extra curriculars and volunteer work...i hope i get in. If i dont then im just gonna do my bsc here in nursing and study for the mcat like crasy...wat about u?

haha ya! there has to more of us!

Ya basically im waiting for the same 3 schools now. If i don't get in I'll continue my BSc at UBC here in Canada. Then study for the Mcat next year and apply to med schools around here....

Hopefully I get into Ireland though, im ready for it!

hey
i'm not in high school anymore (*sigh*) but i've applied to the six-year program at UCD..
i was just wondering.. does anyone know the difference in curriculum between the 6-year and 4-year programs?
i know that the 6-year has pre-med courses in the first year, but then how do the next five years correspond with the 4 years? does that mean the 4-year ppl are entering at our 3rd year level?

hey im really not sure about the curriculum...but thats a really interesting question... i wish one of the ppl alreaddi in rcsi or ucd wud reply:scared: ...o well how r u guys planning to pay for ur education? i dont think the banks can give me a loan on my line of credit cuz im not yet 18 and i wud probably hav to survive on my parents funding and OSAP loans...i hope it will be sufficient

Hey!,
Regarding the money... you can get your parents to cosign ur application for your loan. You can get up to a $150,000 student credit line. Still which is not enough for our 6 years. RCSI is more than $60,000 in just tuition. So basically you need about $400,000, don't take these numbers too seriously.

So, once I get accepted I will leave my uni and start working full time for the next 6 months!.

Ok you high school folks, I am curious, why are you choosing to go into med right after high school and become an IMG by defult?

I get the idea that you want to study medicine first and might not have an interest in a traditional undergrad degree. Yet, there has got to be more to it right? The reason why I say this is because many of us that have BSc. degree or are just finishing a degree struggle with the idea of going abroad due to the hoops one must jump through to come back. Because of this many of us apply in a parallel with North American schools knowing full well that they are our first choice.

So what motivates you guys? I am truly curious to see your perspective and maybe gain an understanding from some of my possible younger future classmates.

Hey!

First of all studying abroad is a great experience! Secondly becoming a doctor and helping people is what my goal , which has been since as far as I remember. I have had many family members who have gone through a tough time, and basically I want to put in my part and help others. I know I could stay here and finish my degree in BSc, that is my second choice, but I rather take a shot and go abroad.

Increasing my knowledge while spreading what I know is what I think is the most valuable lesson. Going to medical school from high school even though I am a first year BSc student, is what I have been asking for.

The sooner I can help others, the better it is.

Well thats my point of view. I have been in many hospital settings across the world volunteering etc, and can truly say we need more doctors worldwide.

Hopefully I can gain admission to one of the schools I applied. I will be worthy for it for my life.

Wish me luck!
Thanks:luck:

has anyone heard anything yet?...
i;m looking through the forum and the majority of the people hearing back have applied to the 4 yr programs...i'm just wondering if any of the high schoolers have recieved offers 4 the 6 yr at rcsi, ucd and tcd?

and to answer ur question giant axon...medicine is what i have always wanted to do (and yes i know this sounds like your typical idealistic high school student who wants to get into med school eventually) but i grew up with it all...i knew the ins and outs by the time i was 10...having seen both the good and the bad and yes even the harrasement of licensure in canada, i feel im informed enough to make this decision this early, i mean if i know what i want should i not pursue it? why would i waste 3, posssibly 4 years of my life (and money) confirming what i know now. that's personally my reasoning for it...hopefully they pick up on how badly i want this!

hey 123cookie123, how was ur interview? what questions did they ask u? did u get an offer? 🙂

btw giantaxon...im glad to see your interest in knowing why highschoolers want to pursue a career in medicine at such an early age. Well...the answer is complicated but in short I can see myself as a doctor ten years down the road, my personality and temperament are best suited in a hospital or clinical environment, I have a passion for the sciences and for treating patients not as mere diseases but as human beings. I have the international experience volunteering in different hospitals etc. and finally i know how limited canada is when it comes to accepting students into medicine which is why ireland wud be ideal. I know that I can complete my 4 years of BsCN and then apply for medicine but if i can get in now...why not use the opportunity when it is given? who knows what may happen in the future? and finally seeing so many undergraduate students apply to ireland for medicine after 2 or 3 years with poor mcat scores and low gpa's reduces my eagerness to pursue medicine in canada when i can see that the trend is already changing and that the possibility of me practicing here is extremely limited...which is why i considered ireland and medicine straight from high school so that i don't lose my focus and neither do i lose this opportunity

Hey,
As the wait goes on, I thought i ask a few questions to my fellow high school applicants:

1) What was your high school gpa that you applied with?
2) What where some of the experiences that made your application unique?
3) What are you doing now.. as in uni or still high school?
4) How are you going to finance your tutions????

Sorry about all the questions but just wanted to pass time quicker:luck:

hey Study247

my interview was interesting for the lack of a better word...they asked me alot about why medicine and why RCSI and how i heard of their school...but at the same time i had one guy grill me with questions and the other just sat there writing so i don't really know what to make of that...at the same time though at the end of the interview the quite one started discussing grades that would put me firmly in the running for the 6 yr program and what i would need for the 5 yr program so i'm thinking we were discussing conditional offers (does anyone know if their offers are conditional or unconditional?). but hopefully we'll find out soon :luck: i'm still waiting on trinity and ucd as well (all i know is i have not been rejected form either yet - but i havnt been offred admission either...so i guess its bittersweet)

to conclude - I WANT IN SOOOOOOOO BADLY (im giving myself anxiety attacks waiting/stalking the mailman =(...seriously it's gotten to the pt where im looking at their rez - which is actually really nice compared to rez in ont)

anyone else here interview with RCSI?

is anyone else panicking or am i the only crazy one?

is it harder to get into the 6-year program at UCD than the 4-year? because i've only heard so far about ppl who have gotten into the four-year program

also.. what's with the tuition hike? 38,000 euro?? that's a LOT of money.. it's like 60,000 CAD!.. times that by six and that's 360,000! and what happens when the tuition goes up even higher from there? .. is it even possible to loan this much money? let alone pay it off with interest..

i know i should be worrying about this once i get an acceptance.. but i'm just going through a panic attack here.. maybe it's not worth it and i'm getting myself into a huge mess

aggh!!

margiethemoo,

I think the tuition of 38 500 euros is for the 4-year program (because it's only 4 years). It's most likely that the 6-year program's tuition is going to be the same as before. 🙂

Are you guys sure??? On RCSI website it says its almost 40,000 EUR for non eu students?

Anyone get accepted today??? Time is going by so slow.

I was asking about UCD
the 6-year for UCD is 27,000 Euro
RCSI has always been more expensive

and i hope they do tell us soon..
waiting is torture

This is what they say on the Atlantic Bridge Program FAQ page:

Tuition fees for the 2007/8 academic year are 27,000 Euros at all of the schools except The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (a private school and a registered charity) at which they are 42,000 Euros for the four-year course and 40,000 Euros for the six-year course. Tuition fees are subject to annual review.

So RCSI has always been 40 000 euros for the six-year course. That's why I'm thinking that the other uni's will stay at around 27 000 (or at least if there is a tuition increase it shouldn't be anywhere near 38 000 euros!!)

Of course the best source of info will be the people who get accepted to the 6-year class this year 😉

Might as well post here, I was accepted into the 6 year RSCI Program on St. Patrick's Day. I am currently finishing up my grade 12 year in Vancouver, Canada and am still waiting to hear back from UCD and Trinity. RCSI is crazy expensive, but I much rather prefer going directly to Medical School then to undergraduate school in Canada or the USA. Anyone else hear anything from RCSI (6 Year)??

hey canuck279 congrats on the acceptance!

can i just ask when your interview was?(just so i can get some timeline established)

and are you thinking of taking them up on the offer or are you going to be waiting for others??

i know i REALLY want trinity (which is apperently killer to get into...but im hoping the last 4 years of IB come in handy for something) but at the same time if RCSI says yes i'll take them up on the offer!

sorry last question...is your offer conditional? or unconditional?
(im thinking for 40, 000 euros it should very well be unconditional)

oo and I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but I was talking to Mr. Keenan and apparently if you have not heard back from UCD yet that's okay. They have sent out their first round of offers so we'll be waiting a month or so for others to reject the offer before the rest are given an offer (but at the same time you have not been rejected). Unfortuantely, though RCSI will ask for a deposit apperntly weeks after the offer has been issued. Canuck279 how much is the deposit?

Haha thanks cookie, so to answer your questions:

My interview was March 1st in Chicago.
My offer is conditional, but on some very basic things (Graduation and 80% plus in my studies). But i know they do offer some Unconditional offers.
I will be taking RCSI up on the offer, I plan to put the deposit down, but will still be listening to other offers. I'm excited about RCSI and don't want to loose the opportunity. I admire the fact that they interview their students as opposed to some other schools. Medical school is a big commitment and they have to make sure the student knows what he/she is getting into to.
The deposit is 6,500 Euros and the total amount for a year is 43,000 Euros. A steep price, but for a great education. Deposit is due on April 7th.

Any other questions please feel free to ask.

How about yourself, are you applying to the 6 year program directly from high school? And what is the status on your application??

hey cookie and canuck...congrats on ur interviews...im glad to hear they went well and neither of u recieved any rejections 🙂

Just to answer brownie's question, we all thought it wud be best to get an idea of each others stats...so here r mine...feel free to post urs too:

1) high school gpa --> approx 88- 89%

2) experiences that made my app. unique --> plenty of volunteer work at hospitals and international relief campaigns, real life medical emergencies and how i indepedently handled them, extra curriculars, being an all rounder etc.

3) uni or still high school --> still in high school

4) How are you going to finance your tutions --> student loans, osap and i dunoo...its really expensive

5) Will u be Living on Residence --> yes

6) What are your choices if u dont get accepted into ireland med schools? - Doing my nursing undergrad in canada

hey btw...cookie u said sumthing about seeing the RCSI rez...can u try to post some pics on sdn? or add the link so we all can see it...i havent seen anything except the pics on their website

well I interviewed in Toronto on the 5th and I am still waiting...
i didn't opt for the FedEx option (I'm a little owrried about the insecurity of the mail - parnoid? maybe but my Boston University app. has been lost 5 times) so I'm thinking it'll probably take longer for me to hear back as it needs to be sent out regular mail I persume? I plan on waiting the full 3 weeks and then emailing ABP...

as for stats - my average was not the strongest (I had an 80% avg. but that is with all my IB courses...and in talking with them during my interview it seemed as though an offer they'd make would be conditional on my IB grades as this what we started talking about at the end of my interview)

experiences that made my app. unique - i'm very socially aware of world issues, I'm involved with Free the Children, student UN, as well as volunteering ALOT in medical settings - i also work at a clinic&pharmacy. But if anything makes it unique is the volunteer work I did in an AIDS hospice in Brazil.

finance - well i'm thinking i'll get my parents to finance the first year (with the accounts they have building up for me) just to minimize the immense dept i will be in after RCSI/Trinity

and obviously i will be living on rez-i'm thinking a 6 hr air commute a day is insane lol...but i know what you mean i will be living on campus as opposed to off campus (particularly 4 first yr...moving to a new city where i know NO ONE - i think living on rez may be benificial) ps i apologize now for popping in and "borrowing" food from anyone who lives near me hahaha (k so i'm a terrible cook and my idea of grocery shopping consists of red bull and oreos...so those will alawys be on hand at my place lol)

and if i don't get into ireland (after months of moping around) i'll probably study in the States (got into a joint B.A/M.D program in NJ...so that'll probably be what I fall back on) or quite possibly the regular McGill/UBC/Queen's medicine route if i am so inclined (I haven't really decided yet)

and yea study I found the rez pics through their website but each one directs you to another website with more pictures...i'm thinking mercer court is reasonable and looks pretty good compared to rez here

here's the website
http://www.rcsi.ie/index.jsp?1nID=93&2nID=94&3nID=115&nID=552
(the first couple are RCSI inspected - the others are independant listings)

sorry for the long post 😳

So neither of you two have heard back from RCSI yet?? I know they do their admissions/rejections in clumps, the first ones on St. Patrick's day and the rest every week after that. Good luck to you both, your stats are solid, I'm sure they will make offers soon =) Where are you two from anyways?

Thanx cookie for the link...the residencies seem to look nice, however the costs are scaring mee 🙁 Oh and canuck, i havent heard back from RCSI, the possible reason for that is cuz i applied on feb 11th 2008...i was a late applicant so im probably at the very bottom of the list ...anyways thanx its gd to hear some encouragement about my stats...i was getting worried...btw wat r urs? oh and im from mississauga, Ontario

hey...wow u actulli volunteered in an AIDS hospics in Brazil...woww...and ur only in high school... nice job...what did u actulli do?

no prob study...i know what you mean about costs though - crazy!
but thats medicine (and i'm clinging on to hope that I can break even before 40 hahahaha)
hey i'm from mississauga too!
and as for the hospice obviously i didn't get to do too much but i did help in prepping the patients, stearlizing equipment (they don't have the prepackaged stuff we do here so it all has to be done before adminstering treatment) and then we had to properly dispose of the materials. so pretty much we did whatever the medical officials did not...
study247 have u been interviewed yet? or are you part of their second rounds?

For Study247:

I wrote this in another forum and copy and pasted it. I'm lazy 😛

My average in grade 12 is around 85. I have volunteer experiences in the emergency room in hospitals and elderly care centers, as well with kids in summer camps (for what it's worth) for the past 2-3 years. I applied to UCD, Trinity, and RCSI, and haven't heard back from the first two.

i know that the 6-year has pre-med courses in the first year, but then how do the next five years correspond with the 4 years? does that mean the 4-year ppl are entering at our 3rd year level?

No. The 4-year students take their pre-clinical courses (Anatomy, Biochem, Behavioural Sciences, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Epidemiology and Microbiology) in 2 (slightly-longer) academic years rather than the traditional 3, and both classes converge for the 2 final clinical years.

for cookie:

no i havent been interviewed yet...i applied in mid feb so im probably part of their second round of applicants...anyways just to get some sort of time line...wen did u apply?

hey guys thought i'd let you all know...i just got into RCSI today for their 6 yr program !
super psyched!

hey congrats, nice to know another canadian who has been accepted. Are you going to be taking the offer, or waiting for others to respond too. Also is your offer conditional like mine (80%+ and graduation)?? If your gonna take the offer where are you gonna apply for housing?? I was thinking mercer court personally. Anyways congrats!!

does anyone know if you can send ur deposit as a post-dated cheque?

Hey,
When do you guys think UCD or RCSI will start sending letters again?? Acceptances or Rejections?? Doesn't matter at this point!! haha

RCSI I think should start next week??
UCD i'm not sure....

Any feedback?

UCD - u'll need to wait until well into April for people to accept/decline offers (so I'm thinking May-ish)
and RCSI should begin sending out invitations for interviews soon

but this is speculation on my part - ur best bet is to ask ABP

I just emailed Trinity asking about my application (or when they think a decision should be made) so now we just wait...

hey congratz on ur admission cookie😀
oh...so RCSI is going to reply sumtime next week eh...i'll be waiting eagerly for the fedex guy to deliver my mail!!!...its been sooooo long now!

RCSI hasn't been a private college since 2002...unless that only applied to Irish students, though I'm not sure how that would work.

Question: why do so many Canadians come to study medicine in Ireland? More so than going to the UK apparently.

Hey Everyone!
i'll be attending rcsi's 6 year med program this fall. im from CA and i was wondering if anyone else from CA is planning on going to rcsi. also, for those students who are currently attending/have graduated from rcsi, how were your experiences in general? im just trying to get an idea of what life is like there because i've never been to europe before.

Hey Tash, congrats on your offer =) I'm from Vancouver, Canada, not quite California, but same time zone 😛 Anyways nice to see more people on here going to RCSI. What did you have in mind for housing?? I haven't done enough research on what is the best option. Any thoughts?

If you need advice on Dublin accommodation, what's reasonable rent and what areas to avoid feel free to PM me. www.daft.ie is a good site to check. It's what a lot of us use here and I got my last two places through it.

hey!
i got accepted to rcsi for the 6 year med program this fall too 🙂

hey canuck 279. haha. congrats on ur admissions as well. im honestly not quite sure about how the whole process for housing works. i just sent all the paperwork and $ saying that im committed to going so im hoping they'll contact us shortly about housing because im not sure how fast it fills up. im going to talk to someone that i know who graduated and hopefully that'll help me out. i'll let u know as soon as i find out tho.

hey abcd12,
