Hey chrisitne(or is it christine? lol) congrats on RCSI!! I was just wondering how you found out that you are wait list. Did you get an email from the school? or ABP?

Hey,
I also have the same questions. How do you know you have been put on a wait list?? I also have an interview with RCSI at the end of the month and am still waiting for an answer from UCD.

I am applying into the 6 year program for both schools. Either one I will accept but UCD hasn't sent me anything? When will they send out their second round of admissions??

Thanks!

just out of curiousity y dont u wanna study in bahrain ...besides the fact that u wanna study abraod? the main thing that im doubting about ireland is that u can't work there unless ur an EU citizen, thus i'd hav to d the USMLEE or CDN exams to cum back and practice here...wat about u...if u wanna go back to bahrain wat wud u hav to do?

Jobs have been restricted for non-EU applicants in the UK recently but didn't realise this happens in Ireland too? I know quite a few non-EU docs here.

hi dr.noodle...i understand that there r quite a few docs in ireland who arent EU citizens, but what happens if they lose their job...wouldn't they be sent back to the country where they are citizens? and they would have to restart their careers...just a thought to consider...otherwise everything about ireland seems beautiful and makes me want to go there for sure...but im just thinking a lil long term..

Hey yousef & abcd!
sry for the delayed response. k, so my average in high school was around a 90% (my weighted uc gpa was like a 4.02 or something close to that) and my i got a 2140 on my SAT.

as for the interview, general tips would just be to show that u have true passion for medicine and you are determined to succeed. be mature and confident and come off as being very personable. they truly are looking for well-rounded people and when they ask you general Q's like "tell me a little about yourself" or "what do you enjoy doing in your free time" be sincere and talk about fun things. you dont have to tie it all into extra-curricular activities like varsity sports, officers of various clubs. you obviously should bring this up, but remember that they already know this from your application. also, show an interest in the school and ask good questions that show your knowledge and your curiousity with regard to the program.

hope that helps!

also, i kinda need some help cuz im in a bit of a dilemma...

so i've already committed to rcsi because im pretty sure i want to go there and the school's amazing from what ive heard. but im still just so tempted to stay in california. i got into UC Berkeley and UC San Diego for regular undergrad and part of me is really having a difficult time giving that up. if i went here, id be so close to home and all my friends and family. i also want that "undergrad experience" that everyone gets at a regular college campus. i would also get the opportunity to take other class like spanish and psychology, which i absolutely love and there are tons of opportunities for joining various clubs and doing internships. and i feel like so many kids go to these schools even tho they're rly tough. but then again, there is no guarantee that i'll get a spot in med school. and i'll prly die in the pre-med courses at berkeley since they're pretty much impossible.

if i go to rcsi, i dont have to worry about the mcat, but i feel like i'll be somewhat isolated from everyone in CA/ U.S. i know its a better decision long-term and its a great experience but im still a little hesitant.i've heard great things about the school, but i've never visited it so i dont know anything first hand. also, i'd be a foreign graduate, but i dont think that should be a problem since it seems like everyone originally from the U.S. is able to get into residencies in North America.

for those of u who went after 4 years of undergrad, how were your undergrad years. do u advise me to go directly to a 6 yr program or do 4 years of undergrad first to get the "experience". also before attending rcsi (or any of the other med schools in ireland), did u actually visit the campus, or just show up and hope for the best? cuz ive never been to europe.

also, yousef, u said that u lived in dublin for like a year? how was it? is it ok socially cuz thats one of the reasons i really wanna stay in C.A.

sorry for the reallllly long message.haha im just rly confused!!

hey tash08,

well i gotta say i'm prolly in the same place you are now. Except i'm not so much conflicted as i am anxious. I'm from toronto but i also applied to schools in the states (inc, Berkely, USC, UGW, BostonU) and i've gotten in to them as well as schools in Canada like UofT McGill and UBC which are tops in the country...but the question comes down to do i stay in NA party like crazy for 4 yrs get decent grades and face the SLIGHT chance of getting to med school here or wind up in Irelnad/Carribean 4 years down the road? So you really don't save any time in the end...you're still waaay behind and u'll prolly wind up in Ireland/Carribean. As for the country itself it's really picturesque and has a great night life if thats what your into (summin like half the population is under 25) plus your so close to their downtown core, and trinity (and hey when your fed up with dublin jump on a plane/train and wind up somewhere else in Europe lol) As for not knowing anyone/feeling outta place - remeber 80% of the student body is from outta Ireland with a significant part from Canada/US. As for your social life - your in Dublin and a short trip from the rest of Europe. Need i say more? Lol

i unno about you (and no one can really make this decision for u) but i know that as it stands the plan is i'm in dublin next yr - pursuing a med career and seeing the world beyond Canada and the states =)

and btw if you look at the student handbook u'll see theres a bunch of stuff you can get involved in. Sorry but i;m just really excited.

My advice? if you really are having some MAJOR doubts and time wasn't a selling factor for you (ie 6 yr vs 8 yr in states/canada) and the MCAT/competition then i would say stay in Cali and take your chances there then re-apply in 4 yrs if you think the time is right for you.

Sorry 4 the long post - just my 2 cents - hope it helps!

all the best :luck:

hey 123cookie123!
thanks sooo much for the advice! it really helps to know that there are other people in pretty much the same situation as far as getting into good u.s. schools and then having to give that up. i see ur point tho, cuz honestly i know that if i go to berkeley or even ucsd, my chances of getting into med school in the u.s. are very slim. i have several friends who are majoring in MCB (molecular cell biology) and are literally dying. i havent ran into one person who said it was alrite even after talking to a whole bunch of people at cal day. i guess my only hesistance is that im leaving behind all my friends.even tho they're going to different colleges, they're only a few hours away. but i know i shouldnt base my decision on that.

my other thing is i dont know if being a foreign graduate deters u from success in the future within the u.s. like if i wanna write grants and do research or get involved in hospital management (or even if im applying to the same residency program as a u.s. med grad). im thinking they would most likely take a berkeley grad over me but then again it depends where that berkeley grad went to med school. the good thing about being a doctor is that they look more at your med school/residency. but still, im not sure.

and the last and one of the more important things im worried about is the social life. haha. i honestly am not the kind who can study like 24/7 n i enjoy going out and having fun with my friends. im hoping rcsi has things to do considering its not really a campus, but more like a few building. they should have some events on campus, or if not, maybe other schools like ucd will and im sure there's stuff to do downtown. so yeah, as long as the people are cool and it is an enjoyable place, then im cool with it.

i think rcsi is prly the better choice if im thinking long-term. there's just sooo much pressure from peers/faculty members to go to school here. part of me says, well a majority of the people go to UC's through the reg. public system and make it, so why cant i? but i know it would be a verryy difficult journey because getting into med school is crazzzzy here. haha. i guess i just need to take a step back and realize whats best for me instead of following the crowd. i have like 5 friends going to berkeley and a bunch at davis and when i talk to others about how im planning on attending rcsi, they've never heard of it. haha. that shouldnt matter tho..

anyways, im just rambling now haha. thanks for all the help!!

oh n i was also wondering if u got into any other med schools in europe/ireland or anywhere else. i got into ucd but decided to commit to rcsi instead because it has more international students and i like the location. i hope its a good choice. :/

i know what you mean...ive never been a study 24/7 type of person...i'd much rather be out socializing (hmm...i foresee problems in med school hahahahaha) no but seriously i highly doubt that's the atmosphere at RCSI (i can tell you for fact its not the atmosphere of dublin)! so if all else fails at least u have me on that front hahaha. and as for faculty/peers i've been getting major mixed emotions (mostly cuz me and my bestfriends have had the whole 'college dorm/roomie' thing planned out for years) but alot of people - those that really know me anyways know that this prolly is the best thing for me - as long as i can keep up my grades i should be more than fine. and most people that do graduate from ireland don't seem to have too much of a problem commming back for rez - so that kinda alleviates some of teh anxiety. like i grew up in the 'medicine' environment my entire family (including the massive extended is invoved in the field somehow) so i've seen enough to know med school - whether ur at harvard, rcsi, bombay or south africa - it all comes down to you - sure the labels ie harvard help but if you dont have the grades/extra currics to back it up it really is nothing to them. plus a UK/irish degree does come with its own perks in terms of international recognition. and as for other schools - i've applied to trinity and ucd - still nothing back from either (im assuming i've been waitlisted as i havnt been rejected to date) but unless trinity gives me an offer - RCSI will be my first pick - if for nothing else just for the international student body and the hundreds others that are gonna be jumping thru the same hurdles as you to come back here!

Hey kids... not to bust up your convo but I just wanted to say a few things as a college grad. If you know you want to be a doctor don't waste your time in undergrad and applying later... sure you'll miss all the traditional stuff but honestly in retrospect it wasn't all that! The best part of my undergrad experience was the summer after I graduated when I traveled Europe. You guys are going to have a GREAT TIME! Ireland is too cool. While your friends will be killing each other in the 8x8 dorm room and running from the cops at party busts... you two will be soaking up the suds at the pub, traveling around to fantastic countries, meeting internationals you will probably know for life and studying to be very YOUNG doctors! I guarantee you YOU will have the better life experience. This is just my opinion but if I knew what I know now I would jump at the chance you two have!

Good luck with the decision.. I know it's hard but don't base it on friends. I only talk to one friend from high school and some of them I went to college with--everything changes once you get away from home. Really! Cheers!

hey i agree to wat is said above..don't base ur decision on friends!!! U will make lots and lots of friends but ur education wont be available all the time. If u have the funds and ur an independent, interpersonal person i suggest you go ahead to ireland and start ur medical education lol and dont base ur decision on being with friends 😛

Hi guys
Been busy, so sorry for not checking on for a while

Okay, just to answer some questions tash08 had,
Ireland is a great country to study abroad in. But it does have its ups and downs. If you have never been to Ireland then suspect to be surprised a little. First off, Ireland is super expensive (especially with the $$ so weak!!! At first this was hard for me to adapt to, because I felt guilty spending my parents money, but after a while I got used to it. So that’s just something to think about. I have to say though, the country is beautiful, in every way and the people are sooo friendly. 50% of the population is under 25, and hanging out at the pubs is cool. They do smoke a lot though, which can me annoying as you walk along the street.

Okay, now talking about rcsi,
RCSI is a great medical school. Its location is perfect, as the luas is right in front of the building. St. Stevens Park is also in front, which is awesome, as it is one of the best parks in Dublin. RCSI does not actually have a big campus (if you can it has one at all). I actually did not know I was at rcsi, until I was in the main building. 80% of the students are foreign, and about 60% of those students are from the Middle East and Malaysia. That is actually a turn down for me, as I would like to make a ton of Irish friends at rcsi. Social wise, it wont be the same as the states at all. It just seems like Dublin can get a little boring at times (especially in the winter), with all the studding and all. But that’s just me. I would say if you wanted to have a more social life, then I would go to trinity, or any of the other big universities.

I hope this answered any of your questions, if you have any more, just ask.

Just curios, how long after your interview from rcsi, did you now if you got accepted or not?

hey!
i found out i had been accepted into rcsi and (ucd) about 3 weeks after my interview.

hey yousef,
i have another question.haha, sry.. do kids from ucd, trinity, and other places outside of rcsi treat rcsi kids differently because they're foreign? like is there some sort of stereotype against rcsi since it houses mostly international students. also, wuts ucd like? is it a huge campus with a lot of international students? and is it harder to fit in because most people are irish and its further away from downtown dublin?

are people pretty chill and is it pretty easy to kick it with rcsi or ucd kids? haha sorry for all the Q's. ive never been to europe before. also, i dont know if you'll know this, but how does the teaching at RCSI compare to that of UCDs?

wow... 3 weeks is a long time. oh well
don't worry about asking questions, its better to know all the facts

thats actually a good question & i know where your coming from.
From my experiences of talking to other students from the other universities, a lot of them didn't even know rcsi existed, because it is a small school. But those that did regarded it as an elite school. the reason why was because it is a LOT harder for irish student to get into rcsi then foreign students. The students that i talked to in my school (who are going for medicine) said that rcsi was one of there first choices, but because it is so hard to get into, they didn't expect too go there. so all in all, other student will not treat you differently because you go to rcsi.
i have never been to ucd, but from my friends that have been, they said it is HUGE!!! they said the campus is like a city, having everything you need in it. It suppose to be way bigger then trinity, which i thought was big enough. they do have a lot of foreign student, but don't worry about fitting in, the Irish are so friendly, and most of them love americans. lol
it just depends who you hang out with, there are some uptight students and some really cool students.
the teaching part i cant really say about, because i have not had any experience, but i am guessing that they are similar.
hope this helps

Hi yousef19894,
i also had a few questions that i hope u can answer:
1) How is the competition at RCSI?
2) Does RCSI actually help you prepare for the USMLEE's and ur residencies or do u hav to do most of the groundwork urself?
3) What are the typical lessons that you learn in your first year?
4) In ur opinion, do u think it is worth going for the 6 yr program right from high school or should one finish their undergrad and then apply for the 4 year program?

Thanks and srry for asking soo many questions

hi!
so i just joined this forum and im FREAKING OUT cuz i think i might get a D in one of my ap classes!!!!!!! im a senior in high school in the u.s. and none of the colleges i got into will take me if i do. i was wondering how it works for RCSI. i got accepted into their 6yr program but do they rescind admissions for failing a class???? or is it possible to take a summer class and make it up? i know my acceptance is conditional upon getting my high diploma and having a cumulative gpa of 3.5 which i'll easily have. but, what gpa do you need senior year? please lemme know asap!! thanks.

They're all bloody hard to get into if you're an Irish student cos you have to get A's in subjects that you may have no interest in but were forced to do. But out of the five, RCSI and Galway have the lowest points requirement with Trinity consistently having the highest (which is strange cos there are less Irish students at RCSI).

High school average B
I can't even imagine I get B for every cource
All Cources are around high 70s to low 80s
Some volunteer Exp

Is any chance to be accepted or should I stop day dreaming ?

hey if ur planning to apply next yr...u can probably increase ur average as well rite? ABP said that you need atleast an 85% average...so try aiming for that...and do some more things other than volunteer work that will make your application more unique

ya, i agree with you dr. noodle, it is hard to get into the medical school for irish students, i thinck you need something like 590 on your leaving cert. that is just outrageous!!!

Yup 🙁 Are you doing the leaving yousef?

Quick Question to Canadian Applicatns. Im an intetnational student from B.C 😀

1. 85% mean your whole school years ( from grade 10 ~ 12) or only mean the final school year average ?

2. Did you guys need to take SAT to appy ?

3. My school does not offer AP cources but should I take them online ?

Thanks Guys !

1) i think they look at ur gr.12 average and may be gr.11 ...but if i wer u contact ABP and confirm

2) no u dont need to take the SAT to apply..i didnt...SAT is only to go to the US

3) If u think u can boost ur average by taking AP courses go ahead 🙂 but its not necessary

Hey study257 thanks for helping me 🙂

One more question, I did very bad on my PE cources, and planing 10 cource. Should I repeat them and make my application look better ? or I should just focus on academic cources next year ?

hey..does anybody know if mercer court housing is full for the fall of 08?

hey, i dont think its full yet, i sent in everything for it four days ago and they confirmed it by email. is anyone else staying in mercer court?

yup mercer court for me too. I haven't sent in the money yet though...

join the freshers 08 group on facebook. all the freshers are discussing stuff there... its for rcsi students. 🙂

Hi, I'm a grade 12 IB student in Canada, and I am going to apply to UCD, TCD, and NUI Galway. What are the entrance requirements for IB students at these universities (I'm going to apply through the Atlantic Bridge Program)? Is there any way to get scholarships as an international student at these schools? When is the application deadline? Where do the interviews take place? How long should the recommendation letter be? What topic should the essay be on? When will I be notified by, if I am accepted, and when will I know that I am rejected?

Thanks in advance for your help
