I don't know, but I think it's worth calling to ask. Sounds like a worthy update 👍

I sent an email and here was their response

"Hi,

The committee is in the process of reviewing the hold files so you can send
the information and we will make sure it is put in your file.

Admissions Office"

So hopefully those of us on hold still have a chance for an interview invite! :xf::xf::xf::xf::xf:

I totally agree.

Being in an unranked pool with like ~100-200 would be one thing, but considering EVERYONE who interviews that doesn't get in is in this "acceptable pool" is just silly because you know probably only half of them really have a chance. I think they could shrink the list a bit, especially right as interview season ends. I think some people would just prefer to be told in march that they are outright rejected instead of just waiting until July to hear the same thing.

EDIT:

In my MSAR for 2009-2010 (so based on last year), UCSD interviewed 569 people total for 134 spots. Considering no one is rejected, that is like 440 people in the waitlist?

Some people will withdraw from UCSD because they will choose to go elsewhere. So the waitlist should be smaller than # of interviewees - # of outright acceptances.

I too got the acceptable pool email ...

For the cycle that Dr. Chewbacca is referring to, there were 304 acceptances. That's better than a 50% acceptance rate once interviewed! There is no way UCSD plans on accepting more than 200 people pre-waitlist. It's just too risky, considering the possibility of a really high matriculation rate. So say they accept 200, which I still think is a maximum. That means that the waiting pool is around 350. Of those 350 they could potentially take 100 if previous years’ data works out as a good predictor of this year. Those aren't bad odds people!

Plus, a fair amount of people will not pursue the waiting pool. So the 350 shrinks a lot.

Zor, if you're just going to put down UCSD without making any constructive comments, I think you are wasting your time. There are plenty of people who are going to eagerly pursue their spot in the waiting pool. It doesn't seem like you want to go to UCSD anyway.

They do fill remaining spots with “similar applicants,” but realize that similar could mean a range of things. Going through a pool of 350 applicants really isn’t that tough, especially when certain applicants stand out, like those who write LOIs. This is what these people do for a living, so I wouldn’t say that it’s too much trouble to search through the whole pool for similar applicants to those withdrawn.

I think UCSD’s admissions office is the MOST transparent of all the California schools. Zeglen and Kelly are VERY honest. If you guys on the waitlist haven’t spoken with either, get on it, and get your name know!

38 days until 2nd look!!!!
This is very true. No other director of admissions in the country (that I know of) is as accessible and forthcoming as Brian Zeglen.

While I agree that Brian's very good with responding to emails, chatting it up on the phone, etc... I'm not sure the "get your name known" approach will get you anywhere. I've talked to him a bunch and he's told me time and again that updates and the like will not really help [or hurt] you. He is adamant that they don't really look at them when reviewing the "acceptable" applicants. I don't think he weighs in on admissions decisions either, so just calling him won't help you much IMO.

That said, Brian's a nice guy, and good for information.

Also, I'm really into UCSD, and hoping that some of the people who would only "settle" for it will get into their schools of choice so that I can get into one of mine! [Then I would let go of my other acceptances and pay it forward for someone else]

This may or may not be useful for other people in the acceptable pool:

I emailed Brian and he said that the reevaluation of people in the acceptable pool begins in mid april. So if you want to send in an "update" letter, you can just send one right before April 15th with all the updates and they will receive it before they start rereviewing acceptable pool applicants.

I also am really crossing my fingers for UCSD, hotpenguin. So here's hoping!

Bam, just got my post-sec rejection letter. Guess I'm the first...🙁

It comes via snail mail. Dang, I wrote them a letter of interest too, goes to show how much those matter.

No its the same as before, it just says hold.

Haha sorry buddy, good luck to you.

Does your status say anything near "Final Decision Letter Sent" ??????

Mine does and it was dated 2/25/09. I also sent an update/interest letter too. Excellent...=(

Sorry about the bad news 🙁 Best of luck to you all, though.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing 👍

sure enough, got my post-sec, after a long 5 month pre-int hold rejection in the mail as well! good luck to everyone else!

I also just got my post-sec rejection letter. Not like I was really expecting anything after 5 months on hold

joining this club, i was just too sad to post yesterday 🙁 🙁 guess another 4 years at ucsd wasn't meant to be...glad they accepted all those people that seem so "thrilled" to be there (don't mind me, i'm just slightly bitter)

Now THAT is going after your dream school. Congratulations, a well earned interview! Persistence pays off people!!

I was looking through the class threads... and noticed that there wasn't one for UCSD?! Potential UCSD Class of 2013, are you out there?

I hear back from them on Tues. Interview was 2/11, but I got pushed back an extra two weeks for the decision.

Saw someone on this post with NYMC and UCSD only interviews. That's me too!! I think it's the most random thing ever....

I am worried that I've only had two interviews so far. Sigh. The waiting sucks.

Second Look invitations just went out! Hope to see you there!! =D

Who's sharing Silverlining's apartment/floor/futon/whatever it is she has available with me? 🙂

Shemarty, are you REALLY considering UCSD given all your other options? After seeing your list of acceptances it seems like you'd have to ration the time spent at second looks and I'd assume that UCSD would be pretty low on that list, but hey: ass u me.

I'm going to wait until March 16th (the RSVP deadline) before I decide for sure. By then I'll have heard back from my other non-rolling schools.

If UCSD doesn't overlap with any other 2nd looks, I may go just to visit silverlining 🙂

I just put myself on the waitlist for housing since I am pretty damn sure this is where I am going. I suggest those of you who are serious about UCSD to do the same.

I call dibs!
Okay! I will take myself off the hosting list then =]

Awesome! Actually, I recommend everyone get on the list ASAP and just withdraw if necessary.

Then again, I love living off campus.

Good luck to all that the admissions committee is currently meeting over. :xf::xf::xf:

Hey Sonnet, that was me with the NYMC and UCSD interviews. I interviewed at UCSD last week so i wont find out for another 2 weeks (not at today's meeting). Good luck, you should be hearing soon.

SIlverlining, is it true that you guys dont get award notifications until mid August? If so, how did you weigh criteria/make sure you had funds to start med school in such a short time period?

I'm sorry, I don't know - I didn't apply for financial aid at the time. You can check with our financial aid office if you haven't already. You can ask about the general timeline or try asking about your personal application. (858) 534-4664

Although need based aid isn't announced until August, merit based aid will start being announced in a couple weeks, and you'll know if you getting it before May. Many schools don't release their need based aid until summer, which is really frustrating, but it doesn't appear schools give much money for need anyway.

Let's hope that Dr. K likes us and gives us the merit money!!

23 days until 2nd look! 🙂 High ho silver!

Their finaid website said somethign along the lines of giving anywhere between 6k to full tuition for need based while almost nothing for merit (merit funds come from outside sources). This sort of makes sense because they dont want the profession to be hostile to poor people. However, not getting the meat of most of our aid packages until the week before school seems ridiculous and abnormal. UCLA has already sent their aid info out....

Ya there are 300-400 of us here..start counting your blessings 😉😀👎

I'm just hoping they put me in the acceptable pool just to increase the suspense 🙂 (It makes me feel better, so don't dash my dreams!) Both my interviewers complimented me several times on my application and the one actually told me I should have no problem getting in and I would have a harder time picking between the school and other ones...I wish he had more weight in the decision process 🙁

I'm in other places so I'm going to medical school regardless, but I just really liked UCSD

Haha..I swear, I can just copy and paste your post but I'll just rather quote it. Acceptable pool SUCKS !!
UC of freakin SD better come through for us 😛😀.
I mean for a school running its administration from a glorified tree house with classes in building of a pharmacy school it sure acts out more than its worth.🙄

placed in the acceptable pool today as well

Welcome to our club my friend, whenever you interviewed you pretty much interviewed for a spot in the acceptable pool (like rest 80% of us) so dont take it to your heart. Hope it works out for you and rest of us :luck:

Ahahahahahaha hey, MTF may be ugly, but it has a special place in my heart.

New buildings are coming... whenever the state decides to give us our money...
