Haha..I swear, I can just copy and paste your post but I'll just rather quote it. Acceptable pool SUCKS !!
UC of freakin SD better come through for us 😛😀.
I mean for a school running its administration from a glorified tree house with classes in building of a pharmacy school it sure acts out more than its worth.🙄

I really didn't mind the medical training facility (I think that was the name of the "tree house"?). And the lecture hall underneath the pharmacy school was really nice. Some lecture halls I've looked into have been so stuffy and dark, I wouldn't want to sit in them for an extended people of time.

Mostly though I really liked the people on the tour, their attitudes about their school, and the impression I got from my interviews. One guy I interviewed in the MTF was a retired professor who still runs a biochem lab and we had EXACTLY the same opinions on the role of research in a science education and I just really clicked well I thought.

So let me get this straight: in terms of merit-based aid UCSD will be handing its decision out within the next few weeks, before the deadline. Should the students be expecting similar financial aid package, outside of merit-based aid, after they've made their decision and before the school begins? If so, should the students expect similar non-merit financial aid package from state schools?

Ya, I was really astonished to see that there was no "medical school building" per say. Hopefully, you guys get one in near future - I mean a top 20 school should atleast have their own building.😀 On a side note, one of my close friends just got laid off, a couple of weeks ago, from a research lab affiliated with UCSD so things really seem to be not so smooth down there.

Well things seem to not be going smooth for your friend, but does that necessarily mean things aren't going smooth for the whole school? Even if one particular research lab is having funding issues, that hardly means the whole school is having trouble. There are a large number of very well funded and well respected research labs affiliated with UCSD, including recent nobel winners. One person getting laid off hardly means there are problems.

It isnt just UCSD though, it is all the UCs. Your first post implied it was a UCSD problem only.

I cant comment on every UC but I know for sure that UCSD is dealing with a LOT of economical problems at this time. Wasnt the enrollment at UCSD SOM reduced by a couple of spots this year? - I am fairly certain but cant confirm it as a fact.

UCSD is having financial problems, I'm sure, because every other UC schools is having money issues (as are many state schools across the country). I just didn't feel your example of your friend getting laid of was sufficient to suggest the research labs at UCSD are having funding problems. The school can have financial problems while research labs are still funded by their own grants. I believe the majority of research labs at UCSD are still adequately funded from their own grants, it is part of what ranks them in the top 20 (their level of research funding).

Once again, it isnt UCSD-specific, it is all UCs because CA is majorly financially ****ed over by our stupid ass legislators and governor. This has nothing to do with UCSD being unable to manage or raise its own finances.

I call the medical campus home, not any one particular building. That's fine with me. =]

Indeed, it would make sense to expect something flashier from a top med school, which is why we had all these plans to fix things up... But at least our lack of a singular "med school building" doesn't seem to have prevented us from doing great things =p

I only brought up research because you mentioned your friend who was laid off from a research lab. Being laid off from a research lab really says nothing about the financial situation of the school. It really doesn't even say anything about the financial situation of the lab in question (he could have just been fired because he wasn't very good).

True. As a lab tech, I'm paid from my PI's NIH grant.

That is basically standard for all research labs, as far as I know.

Most research labs include in their grant applications money for technicians and students. When you are applying to graduate school in many cases you interview specific labs because they ultimately are the ones "funding" your stipend during graduate school in research. You can "get into" a graduate school but not go because the lab you were in contact with at the school doesn't have the funding for you.

So I heard back from the last school I interviewed today and have been accepted to all except San Diego (On the waitlist). Granted I only ended up interviewing at 4 schools, but still.

Anyway, I'm curious if someone remembers from the interview or if someone from San Diego can remind me how many people typically are accepted off the waitlist? I know I can hold another school after May but I'm just trying to think about realistically what shot I have at getting into San Diego (which is my first choice). Just so I know what more or less what to expect come May.

Everyone in the "acceptable pool" is, according to Brian, "acceptable" but if it helps at all I have a 4.0 (Well above a 3.95), 36Q and standard ECs (except for a 3+ year research experience, which isn't quite standard). I am out of state (which i've always considered the thing that hurts me the most with SD).

Thanks for any opinions. I know I'm going somewhere which is a good feeling, but I'm still wondering how much I should wait for one versus plan on another.

He may not be able to reference your particular file, but I hope he'll at least tell you if they're taking 10% or 70% of the acceptable poolers.

Logistically, it was kind of a pain too, since I needed to find a roommate and housing... I decided to withdraw from all waitlists on July 31 because I couldn't stand waiting any longer. That was such a relief because I was then able to get really excited about UCSD (which was not difficult) and make arrangements.

I'd recommend you set some sort of cutoff date for yourself - it'll help you logistically and psychologically =]

(Although I do know a few students who were admitted anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple days before school started =X... but do YOU want to take that chance?)

As it comes closer to mid-april (when Brian said they would start lookin at waitlists) I'm going to send an update letter / letter of intent. And then I wait 😀

I have definitely told myself though that I am not waiting past probably early July. I'll wait through May/June but I want to know where I'm going by July...just can't handle it past then.

I'm just sorta conflicted with UCSD because I feel I'm well above the criteria to get in, but I'm out of state and I don't know if I only have a shot of getting off the waitlist when someone else out of state rejects their acceptance, or if I can "replace" someone who is instate. If I am basically just waiting for OOSers to reject their acceptance, I'm guessin there are far less of those so my chances aren't as high. On the other hand they may "filter" the OOSers before interviewing them, so the fact that I am OOS at this point might be a moot point, I don't really know.

We'll find out I guess 😀

Both my interviewers complimented me several times on my application and the one actually told me I should have no problem getting in and I would have a harder time picking between the school and other ones...I wish he had more weight in the decision process 🙁

I didn't think about it until now but the two people who interviewed me have reversed initials (One was P.R. and the other was R.P.)

But ya, that was one of the guys who interviewed me. Though he wasn't the one who said I would have no problem getting in. I really liked P.R., he was super chill and relaxed and I liked his taste in jazz music.

While it isn't bad...they don't reject anyone after an interview. So it was the worst of the only two options you would have gotten (acceptable or accepted).

They review every other Monday. The last review was this monday.

You then will receive one of two things:

1. An email saying you are in the "acceptable pool" (waitlist)
2. A phone call saying you have been accepted


I believe either one can come as late as Wednesday after the day you were reviewed...though most are on Tuesday.

If you interviewed 3/16 I would expect you will be on the NEXT review date...so you will hear 2 weeks from today.
