2008 destroyer mistake?..

In the math section of destroyer, number 43, it says that in an isosclese traingle, the base and height are the same. How is that true? i think what they meant 2 say is that in an Equilateral Triangle that is true. Cause even in the diagram it looks like a Equilateral Triangle rather than an isoscles.

So people who are doing QR, heads up on # 43.
 
Just looked at it. Its not equilateral. That means all 3 sides are the same size. Isosceles is correct, but I suppose clarifying it as a right isosceles triangle would be a good idea.

So in an isoscles triangle, base is always equal to height? 😕 Thats not true...
 
never mind,i just looked at the diagram again and noticed that we are only shown HALF of the "isosceles" triangle. That is why 1/2 base is 7 and height is 7. lol...got it.😛
 
No, not always. In fact, an isosceles right triangle is the only time this occurs (i believe?). If it helps you any, the angles are 90, 45, 45. The side opposite the 90 is the hypotenuse and the lines opposite the 45s are its two legs that happen to be the base and height in this particular instance.
 
In an icocelles triangle 2 sides are always equal, and the two angles opposite them are always equal. The destroyer is correct. The formula for area pf a triangle is (base*height)/2. Since the triangle is isocelese the two sides must be 7 each and therefore bade times height is 49 and dvided by 2 is 49/2 which is choice D.
