I know there's a general progress thread already out there, but I find it a little too general. I think it will be helpful for us all to single out interview invites for us non-trads in a single thread (like in the pre-allo forum) . I go over to the pre-allo thread and it seems like the vast majority of invites (as well as applicants in general I'm sure) are 22 yo and below.

Where do we older students stand in the process?

Let me begin by saying... I currently have NO interview invites.

Hopefully someone else out there can brighten our day.

My boyfriend is 27 and is in the Post Bacc program at U of Penn. Well he just finished. Has sent in his med school applications...just took MCAT Sept. 8 and has received a bunch of secondary applications....I guess no interviews until he gets MCAT scores, right??? So do you all think non traditional students have a better chance than regular students???? That is what I have heard...

I am truly shocked by some of them! 🙂 I was hoping for one MD interview by now, this is amazing🙂... and the schools I thought would love me... I have heard nothing, this process is soo humbling, unpredictable, but incredibly exciting!!... good thing I applied so broadly🙂

Too bad you don't have a Chicago interview next month too. I left my GWU mug in the hotel room and am so bummed about it. I'd try to convince you to pick up one for me too at your interview if you were coming here afterward....

Anyway, don't stress about the GWU interview at all. The school will no doubt impress you with the amazing opportunities they have there, and they really like non-trad students and have a laid back student body as well as a very laid back interview day and interviewers. Closed file and very conversational. It runs from 9:45-1:30pm. Just be sure that you have one strength and one weakness in mind to discuss, an explanation of how you deal with stress or de-stress after a rough day, and perhaps one major problem with the healthcare policy (I just talked loosely about access, and my interviewer seemed satisfied - no grilling). Good luck with all of your interviews!

Im 26 year old trying to restore a horrible gpa 1.5 in 2003 now a 2.5, 2yrs left of undergrad. have lots of health care experience, speak spanish and great ec's. As far as an MCAT score what would you say I would need to get an invite.

Thanks so much! My first interview... I didn't anticipate how nervous I'd be until I sat down with my interviewers and heard myself talking a mile a minute in response to the "Why medicine?" question. Fortunately, my interviewers were very personable, and I relaxed after a few minutes.

My advice to others: do think carefully about responses to the common questions and have an outline in mind when you go into your interview, but when you actually sit down and start talking, do NOT try to read from a mental script. Just relax and be yourself. You have already made it past a huge threshold by being invited for an interview. At this stage, I think your interviewers are really just trying to discover the person behind the paper. To reveal that terrific person, it is important to stay relaxed!

For what it's worth, I had the same experience at my first interview. But for the last two, I've been much more relaxed. So, it does get better!

And I can't stress enough how useful the SDN interview feedback database is. I read through some of the entries for UIC the night before my interview, and saw "Tell me three recent break-throughs in medical technology/medicine" or something to that effect. It was 1am and I could only think of two off the top of my head. I went to sleep and in the morning could still only think of two. I did some quick online research, came up with two more, and wikied them. Of course, my first interviewer asked me that very question, prefaced with "given your background this might be a very difficult question for you to answer....," and I was able to look appropriately pensive and give great answers. Had I been asked that at the interview without knowing it was coming, I probably would have drawn a blank for the third. And he was taking notes on my answers! Also, definitely read up on stem cell research a little. Not the ethical dilemmas, but scientifically what it entails - at least for UIC interviews.
