Im 99% sure I am going, top reasons being:

1). I loved the students and faculty. Of my 6 interviews, Buffalo was the nicest by far.
2). Clincally it is a great school.
3). Cheap!
4). Buffalo, despite the weather, is a great school.

I have nothing against the older married students, but Im hoping there will be a couple single students around 22-24 who are willing to be social and make new friends outside of the hard work needed to be a dental student.

One more thing, I interviewed at Louisville as well (by got waitlisted) and personally liked buffalo alot more. Im from the Midwest, and although everybody was extremely nice there, I didn't really feel like I fit in. Also the massive amount of out of state tuition was a negative factor. I think the biggest positive that Lousiville had over buffalo was the technology. I was very impressed with the SIM lab and the technology incorporated into the cubicals. I also wasn't a big fan of the surrounding area of the dental school, very business like and medical orientated.
This is my personal opinions, both schools are great, and you'll be a dentist either way. Congrats on getting into some great schools.

I have been in buffalo for the last 5 yrs or so undergrand and 1 yr masters. Its a great school and from what I hear always top 10 or better in national boards. Yes it is a demanding program but post grad programs know that and that makes you that much better when you have the UB degree. Dr. Flash in admissions told me that there will be a site for the incoming students early next year so we can all communicate but this is good for now. I have a house (5br 2200 sq ft) that I am looking to rent to dental students so just keep me in mind if your comming and need a place. I am 1.2 miles from campus on the good side of town.
Keep in touch class of 2012

hey DDSjr,
yes I am accepted to UB and I am going there. I am a 22yr Male very clean and the house is being renovated totally for next year (january)
Let me know I would rather rent to dents than any one else.
email me at [email protected] for more info and pics

I will be attending UB in the fall. Love the school.

Congratulations to all of you. UB is a great school especially for the price. Besides the excess snow, the only thing I do not like about Buffalo, is the high NY state property taxes. They are out of this world.

It's only four short painful years in Buffalo:laugh:
Personally I'd like the fact that I get to go to hibernation mode in dental school in Buffalo, we just get bombarded with too much media crap.😉

Hey future classmates comming to buffalo if you have any Q's just get ahold of me at my email: [email protected] I have been here going on 5 years, take classes at the school and work at the school. Also very familiar with housing and demographics. Good luck to all and looking forward to August!
BTW when the time comes get the mac for the laptop, just mine and most others opinion....

did anyone get a scholarship? ....do they even give out scholarships?

They are so cheap already. Even for Out of State. 32,000 per year is a steal imo.

I just want to see who they want. If they want me or just willing to have me.

Plus, I'd have to pay out-of-state tuition, which sucks.

I'll probably end up going to Buff. Just waiting on Columbia and UMDNJ because its much closer to home. Personally i think Buffalo has better facilities than both Columbia and UMDNJ. I'd just prefer going to a school about an hour away from home. But it seems like I'll end up in buff. Can't wait to meet the rest of the class.

Totally agree. Look at the private schools they are around 40000:scared:
After one year you are considered NY resident and it goes down even further to 16000.

I'm trying to decide between Buffalo and Nova. Anyone have a suggestion? If I do go to Buffalo then I will be looking for a place to stay, does anyone know which part of town is the good part?

I asked about the residency thing and you can only become a resident if you BUY a house there. But if you are planning on buying a house then it is totally sweet... very cheap tuition.

After one year you can get instate tuition even if you dont BUY a house. All you need is an apt (NY address) and a NYS driver license. As for a place to stay most of amherst is good, I would stay out of most of the immediate sourrounding area of the campus that is not amherst. Some areas of north buffalo are nice and tonawanda / cheektowaga is ok. I may have something available in May/June for rent, shared bedroom at $400 everything included utilities, cable and high speed internet, lots of space and off street parking, 1.2 miles from campus in safe area. Just to give you an idea the living is pretty cheap compared to other cities. And if you are willing to share a place with classmated you can get 3br apts for less than $800 with out utilities in Amherst. As you get farther from campus the rent may go down.

Accepted...

Someone make a tally of the people accepted!

You misheard. What they said was you automatically become a resident upon purchasing a house.

Everybody gets residency after the first year regarless of whether or not you buy a house. Buying a house can get you in-state at the beginning of your first year.

Any cute single girls out there coming to buffalo?

Ha just kidding, but what are ages and sexs, those of you who are planning attending Buffalo (that is if its not to personal of a question).

Check your info again. I've been told that after one year you can claim NY residency. Click here.

I may be interested in renting from you. I am 22 year old male, and will be most likely doing the military route. Let me know any more info if interested.

For those who are in, is this your first time applying or have you applied more than once? at my interview the majority of ppl where older some married and with kids and not many comming out of a 4yr undergrad. I actually applied last year and was waitlisted. I did a lot in the year between and gained accpetece that way 2nd time around.... But still im 23 some were a bit older, did any one else see that?

I saw a lot of older people at the interview too. This is only my first time applying at Buffalo and I only was waitlisted. What was your interview date?

Yea, I saw some of that, but there were younger applicants too. I myself am first time applicant and a senior in college, so I will balance it out a bit.

Buffalo takes a good mix of older and younger. I've seen people who've spent the first few years after undergrad doing something else and then deciding on dental school.

My interview date was the 3rd friday in october, want to say the 17th or so. The waitlist is not a bad thing a know a few people in the freshman class who got off the waitlist. I was not one of those people last year but with a little persistance and hard work got in this year. Its just a long wait (mid to late spring is when you can first hear)

Whats the deal I hear about this no Boards and only a residency program for graduation for the state of NY?

They mean the regional boards, NERB. In NY NERB is no longer required to practice instead they require residency program. This puts people who are not looking to settle in NY in a bind since other NERB states still require it and NY schools don't have to offer a NERB preparatory course in the curriculum.

Will Buffalo? I feel like that is kind of leaving your students behind especially when 45% are out of state. Hopefully they will offer some type of preperation.

For this year they probably will be offering it. I think the students will push the school to continue offering the course.

Do you guys mind updating your info on prednets.com? it is so much easier to see the % that way.

I want to see more people put their profiles on predents.com

I saw you there blankguy! Since only about 10% of the people who normally apply have been listed as applied, can we take a 10% rule and carry it over into everything else? (wish that would work) Does anyone know how many interviews Buffalo usually does?

For this year meaning 2012 class or the 2008 class? I think that with almost half of their class being out-of-state that they would still offer the class to those who wish to take it.

The NERB is being offered to those students graduating in 2008. A couple of months ago, they took a poll of our class (2009) to see what our plans were. At that point, the school was considering offering the WREB. Although I don't think a final decision has been made for our class, I think that the demand for the NERB was greater than for the WREB... so if I were a betting person, I would bet that the NERB will be offered in 2009.

But the key point here is that they are making decisions on a yearly basis, and are basing the decision primarily on input from the students.

So how do those students wanting to prepare for the WREB prepare? Do they just offer one course (ex NERB) and not the other?

Welcome to regional licensing football.🙄 I guess I am suppose to size up my rivals for which regional board to take.😴 I don't understand why they do it like this? Is it that without the prep course there's going to be a hole in the curriculum that they feel has to be filled? They should just let people pick which board to go and form mini study group/tutoring sessions. That is so much better.

The administration has made it very clear they only want to offer one licensing exam. The exam is much more than just a "course." Board examiners need to be flown in and put up in hotels and the clinics are closed down for 2 days to allow for the testing. It is a big deal and it is a huge disruption to the school. And this is only for the live patient portion of the exam. The mannikin portion is time consuming as well.

In the past, there have been only a couple of students who have taken the WREB. In those cases, they had to go elsewhere to take it. I think in one case, one student went to Ohio (perhaps Case Western?) to take the WREB.

How many people per class hail from NERB states on average?

How many people per class hail from NERB states on average?

Last I heard, there were approximately 30 to 35 states that accepted the NERB for licensure. So if I had to guess, I would say that on average, at least 75% the students at Buffalo comes from a NERB state.

I was just reading UB's acceptance packet which includes some information regarding the licensure exam, and found something quite interesting.

It states that UB SDM "does not anticipate offering a clinical licensing examination in the 2011-12 academic year and beyond."

Does that mean the school will be offering no licensing exam, (WREB, NERB etc) period by the time we graduate?

Keyword there is "does not anticipate". It means that they don't have to but they can change their plans.

75% coming from NERB state that's a sign the NERB will continue to be offered.
Especially since Buffalo is a state school from NERB region.
