No boss.... you are the man (gal?). Harvard wants to meet you. Congratulations!!!!

Interview with NP!

For anyone waiting to hear: 38Q, 3.6cum/3.4sci. You do not need a 4.0 to get an interview!

congrats, jolt! if any SDNers will be at harvard in the near future...PM me! i'd love to meet you.

when does harvard start interviewing?

EDIT: congrats to suenya too!

lOl just a 38Q mcat ;p Congrats guys!

Thanks! I'm a reapp (applied MD/PhD Philosophy) so this is my last shot hehe.

They have a great non-degree medical ethics program, so I'm super excited.

Edit: Yes, my MCAT is solid. My GPA, however, is below average at MANY schools. My LizzyM is pretty solid though, overall. I was a bit nervous about the GPA after not getting in last year though.

What is a Lizzy M??

i'm not sure you should put so much emphasis on numbers - i would like to humbly put forward that i (and many others on this thread) have solid numbers, and we haven't gotten invited by harvard 😉 take pride in your accomplishments!

suenya, are you an md/phd reapplicant or are you going only for the md this time around?

Oh, I know. They could easily fill a class with people with better numbers than me! My point is that they care less than I thought, so there is hope!

I am applying straight MD this time. I decided that I didn't really need a PhD to work in the area I am interested in, and I can always go back and do one if I change my mind.

congrats on all the invites!

i am also a reapp, interviewed with NP last time and am hoping for better luck this cycle!

for those with invites, when were you complete?

Congratulations to those who have received invites.

One quick question, though. I submitted my AMCAS and letter packet back in July, but have not yet submitted my secondary. I have recently acquired a letter from one of my research supervisors (the letter is in Interfolio), and I would like to add it to my file at Harvard. However, it looks like Harvard only accepts letters sent through AMCAS. Would I have to send the entire letter packet (which would now include the new letter) to AMCAS? If so, is there any way to have AMCAS send the new letter packet only to Harvard, or would it have to send the packet to all my AMCAS schools? I'll call Harvard and AMCAS tomorrow if necessary, but it's past their hours of operation right now. Thanks to anyone who can help me before then.

I think you can update it with AMCAS and select to have it sent to whatever school you want without a problem.

i think the posters with invites said up above when they were complete (one around 9/1, one around 8/20). i'm not sure harvard goes by complete date though - there are possible other factors they likely consider (like, if someone listed unavailable travel dates on their secondary... or, if harvard is like duke, the speed/efficiency of the reviewers who have your application in their pile). hang tight!

invite this afternoon!!!!! complete 8/19. 35Q and 3.85 for both GPAs. can't believe it. absolutely can't believe it.

Do you have a lot of research or clinical experience on your app? I'm asking because I have pretty much the same numbers but no research...basically I'm just antsy.

Relax a little bit. I have better numbers and 2 years of research but no invite yet. She does, however, have a Cell publication. That's pretty impressive, but I wonder if they actually read our apps so thoroughly until after the interview. After all, your app isn't truly "complete" until after the interview.

when did science become more about counting publications like currency than actually learning useful information?

Congrats to all with good news!! Interview invite here as well!

Lol. I know! I got the email while I was interviewing at another school and was like "huh?" You can bet I was in a really good mood for the rest of that interview day 😉

has everyone else got NP interviews or are some of you getting an HST invite, like me?

how do we freaking know that it was that *one* publication that got me an interview there? and here i was, thinking that maybe my background was interesting enough that harvard wanted to talk to me. what could i possibly have been thinking? thanks, SDN, for bringing me back down to earth. god forbid i should have been flattered or excited. 😎

wow dude. i wasn't even referring to you. it was just a comment based on what i read. had nothing to do with your situation at all. chill

and regardless of whether or not harvard gives you or anyone else an interview, your background is interesting.

Hey there just wanted to say congrats and by the looks of your MDApps profile I'm sure your application is really interesting...you should be proud. Also, a 35Q and 3.85 GPA are average to above average stats for a Harvard medical student (the #1 research institution in the US)...their website lists ~35 MCAT and 3.76 GPA (Class of 2008). No one has any right to look down on your stats cause they're awesome (and, admittedly, better than mine). Good luck!

No, still be excited! That's freaking amazing that you got an interview. Seriously, it's Harvard Medical School. They definitely look at everything when inviting, which is why I was wondering what you had in addition to your stats (which are great). I don't think anyone was trying to suggest that you only got an interview because of a publication, but they were just saying that you have a lot of strong points on your application in addition to stats and whatever else.

Either way, you earned and received an interview at Harvard, so nothing should be getting you down. Congrats again!

haha thanks. i am still very excited. that post was a bit sarcastic, hence the 😎. but i appreciate the encouragement. 😳

ok BIG QUESTION!!!!

i got a letter in the mail from Harvard. it was one of those "your a URM so you should apply" letters. i had a 30 on the MCAT.....is it even worth applying? i feel like it would just be a waste of money since my stats arent super.

what do yall think?

Chin up, dw! Good skill. (I'm of the belief that luck has very little to do with your invite, so, I wish you good skill.) 😉

This. 👍 I don't know why why dw took it the wrong way...

NP invite. Didn't do anything too special. Best of luck to everyone

With a 30 MCAT score, Harvard is a big reach (well it's a reach for everyone tho). But you never know, so give it a shot if you want! MCAT scores aren't necessarily what makes an applicant attractive to a med school. People (both URM and non URM) have been known to go to harvard (and the other top 10 schools) with scores 30 or below (but they are small in number). Others with MCAT scores 35+ may not even be given an interview at these schools. SO, your whole application counts! If you have a strong app all around (GPA, ECs, life experiences, etc), then apply away!!! Good luck!!:luck::xf:

Harvard interviews 800-1000 applicants from a pool of 5,138 according to the 2008 numbers. If we assume the number interviewed is 900, that's a 17.5% interview invitation rate for arguably the best medical school in the nation. I'd say you did a few things right along the way. 🙂 Enjoy it!

Those numbers are for the Class of 2009 (entering class of 2005).

congrats to those that have received interviews but i thought that harvard didnt give any out till later and they kinda gave them all out at the same time-ish. when i got the secondary it said in caps, all applications received before november 15th will receive equal consideration. was i naive by putting off their secondary to finish the ones for schools i know was rolling?

Name, prestige, and location aside, I feel as if most med schools are more or less similar. The one school that's unlike any other is Yale because of the Yale system, imo.

I found this interesting. Other than reputation (which is a value judgment anyhow), upon what piece of data would one judge which ONE PARTICULAR SCHOOL should be considered THE "best medical school in the nation?"

Not flaming here, just really curious.

I would love an invite here, and have good reasons to want to apply, as does everyone else I'm sure, but is there really any school that should be considered "the best?"

The best for an individual, sure, but really? Nationwide? None better? I caught that you qualified your statement with the word "arguably," but this makes me curious.

Please explain if you don't mind.

I am not sure of 'best' schools but several programs are sorta distinctive from others in how they are structured, for example: Mayo (really small class size), Yale (the Yale System), Duke (1 pre-clinical year), CCLCM (research yr included, 5 yr program), Hopkins (Genes to Society - New Curriculum), Stanford (Scholarly Concentrations), Dartmouth (Global and National Clerkship opportunities).

I am sure there are several more 'unique' programs, these are just one thing that makes some of the schools I looked into different from each other. At the end of the day, you will get a good medical education almost wherever you go. It's a matter of fit more than anything else.
