What? Seriously? Whenever I hear about a pre-med whose main motivation is to go into research, I can't help but wonder "then why the hell aren't you doing a PhD?" And now we have a case where someone was originally planning to go to graduate school in their desired field...but then changed their entire professional track to gain admission to HMS and somehow, during the throws of medical school, get a backdoor entry into the MIT research they wanted all along. Please explain your other reasons, because this one has my head spinning from the impracticality...
I'm interested in translation research in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, and computer engineering. There are many lofty medical schools who prepare their students well for wet lab research, but not many suited for the type of medical research that I am interested in. I only applied to schools that I would want to attend and that cater to my research interests. (I didn't apply to JHU because I spent last summer in Baltimore and that was enough.) Also, I didn't apply NP because it didn't suit my interests.
Bannie is far from the only example of those posts. If she was, I wouldn't have mentioned them in the first place because she makes posts like that on every thread. I follow most of the other main threads and the degree of pathetic infatuation (yes, I think both words should go together) is much higher in this thread.

This thread has devolved pretty significantly into petty insults and really lowered my opinion of the people who use this site. This is really disappointing if these are the kinds of people who are going to be physicians in a few years. I really would have expected more understanding and support, considering the amount of stress we're all under at this point in the application process.

Oh, I just noticed, if you are actually quoting me on the first sentence on the fact that they are somewhat inspirational.
Yeah... whether they were inspirational or not, at least its something positive that is engraved in your mind now. And the fact that you said not THAT inspirational, rather than not inspirational... also suggests that I somewhat achieved my purpose 🙂

I for one think the trend the thread has taken is glorious! The last thing we need at these institutions of power are more obsessively conformist robots who are too timid to call each other out on the BS these places promote and their own questionable motivations. Those attitudes are what give Harvard and similar schools their reputation for elitism, and they're also the norms that have allowed Harvard and similar schools to produce the societal leaders who've hand-crafted this terrible for-profit non-system of health care delivery currently plaguing the nation. For the record, I only applied to Harvard for s***s and giggles, never got an interview, and now read this thread purely for entertainment from all the neuroticism.

👍 I have just recently discovered this gem. This is more entertainment than any DO or URM thread could ever provide.
Some things have been a little over the top but I think our discussions from the last 2 pages are better than the whole rest of the thread combined. Thank god we're actually able to speak our minds and DON'T have to be conformists. I mean, isn't that what they call diversity? ****, would ya'll rather have classmates that are all conformist suckup robots or someone who speaks their mind like NERDAY SHORTAY? I think i'd be bored outta my mind without people like her and SwineSue. Here's a better question. How do you think they'll do as doctors? My guess is that they'll do a hell of a good job because out of all the people on this forum they're some of the ones that seem most normal and can probably actually empathize with real patients.

You clearly have not read the majority of SwineSue's posts on this website. They're nothing short of cynical, elitist, and condescending (just scroll up a few posts). You two would be perfect together at Harvard as "normal" people 👍
I did not apply to Harvard but someone recommended I read the last few pages and this thread is awesome. It screams of hypocrisy. It's funny how the people who are talking about being non-conformists and self-proclaimed compassionate future doctors are the ones who are coming off as being elitist and condescending, only adding to that same stereotype of Harvard that they are trying to put down. i do think ppl are different in real life compared to sdn, so no point in judging people's character here.
anyways, i would actually expect most ppl who interview at harvard to get drawn in. after all, they showed you some love by inviting you for an interview. lets say you were rejected post-secondary and they invited you to come look at the school (just for kicks), people's perception would most likely be very different. same logic probably applies to other schools as well.
premed advisors and admissions directors continue to preach "fit", and "go where you will be happy". as someone who didnt listen to that advice when choosing undergrad, i can tell you that you'll really learn that lesson the hard way.

I am also 99% sure it'll be wednesday - because that's what the adcomm told me when I was there on my interview day (Wednesday, March 17th - I even wrote it down 🙂 )
Then again - they could've changed their minds or some such. So there's still that 1% chance it won't happen on Wednesday.

2. Some buddies and I had a brief stay in Fez, Morocco this past summer. We decided to check out the local flavor, and found a traditional bath house. On the train ride back to Casablanca, a Moroccan man was talking to me about it.

Research at a place like MIT would obviously be a huge element of that.

I applied MD/PhD but I was rejected and I interviewed MD-only for the HST program. Pursuing just an MD through the HST track still provides great research opportunities at either Harvard or MIT, although I would have to deal with the financial difficulties of paying off student loans as an academic researcher.

hahaha, oh yeah man, we just wait for opportunities to gun each other down, cuz you know, thats what we do here.
some of y'all need to chill out a bit. Of course, the HMS forum last year sounded exactly like this. It does every year. Harvard's name kind of does that. But then you realize that their admissions staff is pretty damn good at what they do, and weed the douchebags out. Everyone who's left, well, they chill.
I would urge people here:
1) please don't make assumptions of what we HMS students are like unless you've met us personally on interviews and stuff. If you still hate us, well i mean, that's up to you, and we are quite sorry
2) please dont make assumptions about the future class at HMS because of the people you met on interviews or the people you post here. The people you meet on 2nd look will be the people you're actually going to interact with if you choose to come here, and you should see how you like them. Interview population can be quite different from second look population.
3) the current first years are working mad hard to plan an incredible second look for you guys, so please come!

I personally thought the students we met at interview day seemed really nice and chill. I didn't get to know the students I interviewed with that well, but they ranged from seeming nice, to the one I talked to more seeming pretty great.
Also, all the residents I work with that graduated there (like 1/3 of the group are from HMS) have been really nice, helpful, chill people. Maybe that's because psychiatrists are just awesome, or because this program weeds out the unawesome ones, but I've only been impressed.

oo that is a good point...in previous years, harvard's spring break had always been later in march. with the calendar change spring break falls during what has usually been decision week 😏
could be why someone mentioned a possible march 22nd date for mailed decisions earlier on in the thread

I know the people I interviewed with were really awesome (the HMS kids, and the other interviewees). Besides if they are douchebags, you can always avoid them (you all did premed - I'm pretty sure there were QUITE a few douchebags in your programs that you became very adept at avoiding no?)

Ok.Nice! Then since MD/PhD kids have to be accepted into either NP or HST before getting into the MD/PhD program, I assume they have made all their decisions and that decision emails are gonna go out sometime this week.

I don't believe you. Everyone that is currently in the program says that you get an email. Also, why would your friend get a call at 7 AM? That seems ridiculous.
