Hopefully our revisit will convince you 🙂

a response from the legendary shemarty, honored!

i do definitely lean towards ucsf. home is where the heart is....plus who can resist digging through cadavers with a view of the pacific?

Wow this is too exciting! Big Congratulations to everyone who got accepted. We cannot wait to meet you guys at HMS (a good number of us might take a year off, so we will be your classmates as well).
And good luck to everyone else! Too bad I'm on break so cannot confirm anything, but based on what have been said, i think there might be more acceptances going out. Just wait for a few more days guys!

and yes, the battle has begun. so beware! 😛

Just a heads up to accepted students to reply to the email, confirming that you got it. I stopped reading at "I am delighted" and started freaking out, but after a later read, you have to reply to the email.

And I just calmed down after a stressful night last night... now I read this! 🙂 I remember the admissions office saying Wednesday the 17th... I guess they jumped the gun?

I do agree it seems a little odd that they'd roll out ACCEPTANCES over the span of a few days - I've heard of decisions done that way before. Although the majority of the call-back-to-confirm seems to confirm that more acceptances are forth coming... there's only one way to know eh?

Like I always say - We'll know when we know. Oy. This is going to be a hard 48 hours

Really liked HMS... here's hoping my luck holds out. C'mooon lady luck :luck: Grats to all those who got in! Hopefully I'll be lucky enough to join ya'll 😉

Edit: Hate being one of "those" paranoid premeds, but it looks like only acceptance emails have come out (accept to HST, rejected for NP still counts as acceptance email 🙂 ). This adds credence to the idea that acceptance emails come out today, and the other decisions come out later. This does fly in the face of what some people heard from the admissions office... but I duno how much information they can actually release over the phone. Oh well. We'll know when we know

haha thanks I had completely forgotten

LOL I totally missed the whole "reply" thing. Thanks! Did anyone notice the email was entitled "Welcome to the HMS Class entering in 2014"?

Yup,

I saw the subject and then I went ballistic. I walked around aimlessly and started telling random people that I got into HMS. First time I have been really excited throughout this application cycle.

Same. Definitely not too hopeful about this one, but I guess you gotta keep your head up, right?

The odds are better than you might think. I asked about the waitlist a while ago, and they said that only about 20-30 people are put on it.

i feel like the waitlist emails are contradicting that?

does anyone know if they do post-interview rejects or just waitlists?

The waitlist email said that they put about 50 ppl on the NP waitlist and 30 on the HST waitlist.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too...

yeah they will probably send out the ~700 post-interview rejections tomorrow in a mass e-mail..pretty sure they're not going to personalize each rejection letter with "Dear Mr./Ms. Smith" like they did their acceptance/wait-list e-mails so it shouldn't take them a few days to send out..that would be ridiculous..

i wonder which stage I got cut because I got an interview invite relatively early following submission..and thought both my interviews went really well...sooo soo soo disappointed..

sry to those who didnt get in/still waiting.

rejection def sux, but im guessing most of you have other great choices. enjoy the weather and in a few days or so, you wont care!

Yeah, which are both larger numbers than last year (based on last year's posts). I wonder why that's so.

Either way, the number speak for themselves. If HMS takes 165 students, I imagine they overshoot and initially accept about 230 or so? Doesn't leave much room for waitlisters, does it?

For what's it worth though, I did meet an MS1 at my interview who said he had been accepted off the waitlist the day before classes started...

Just curious, does anyone know what that date would happen to be? Mid-August, I presume?

TOTALLY missed that haha, thanks for the heads up. I zoned out after reading the first line and immediately walked out of work to call my dad...... He thought I was JOKING.

HMS, last year, took 201 people. I dont know how many people were on the waitlist, but I believe approx 10-15 of the people in our class of 165 came in off the waitlist. So there is substantial movement.

This is only preliminary, but I believe that the first day of class with be August 16th. Before that there are two pre-orientation activities: FEAT and FUNC. The former is a 4 day backpacking trip through the white mountains (WHICH IS AWESOME) and the latter is a week-long boston-based community service event. I did FEAT last year, ZebraDX did FUNC, so we can probably comment on those

So, first off, congratulations to those who were accepted today.
A friend and I were waitlisted at HST and at NP earlier today (we both got the email within seconds of each other). Despite reading the 30-HST, 50-NP note, we immediately agreed that the prognosis at this state is poor. Unfortunately, we then fell into the trap of asking exactly how poor.
When it comes to speculating on SDN, it tends to be the blind leading the blind, but I'm going to ask the following anyways.
1) My sample size is only two, but did most people who were waitlisted at HST also get waitlisted at NP? It's minor, but it's the difference between 50 and 80 people still being considered.
2) Are any/many people on the waitlist at one program already into the other at Harvard? If the HST, NP, and MSTP committees really make their decisions in isolation, as advertised, then this would be likely. I have a hard time actually imagining this being the case, seems counterproductive, but it would definitely be helpful for those waitlisted.
Anyways, good luck to those who haven't heard, and three cheers for almost being at the end of this lengthy process.

Do you mean 201 acceptances in all? Or 201 off-the-bat with waitlists to follow later?

REALLY?? Aw man, mine wasn't. Maybe swiftly corrected. I would have laughed so hard!

How many people are still waiting to hear/anticipating a rejection tomorrow?

I was saving my 500th post for good news...but I guess I'll just raise my hand in response to your post...still waiting.

still waiting here. not too optimistic, but still elated about the past 10 days.

This question is for current and recently accepted HMS students that have chosen HMS over Hopkins: Why HMS over Hopkins? Did the multi-hospital vs single hospital have anything to do with your decision? Please also comment on faculty and students.

while i am neither, i suppose boston > bmore as a general sentiment has something to do with it? boston is a great city

I am neither, but some of the residents I work with have said that they liked HMS over Hopkins because apparently much of Hopkins is like ridiculously hardcore strict with rules and formality in training, comparatively. Like, no bathroom breaks during shift, etc. One of our residents who came from Hopkins apparently had a harder time adjusting and was a bit rougher on med students until he got the slightly more reasonable (IMO) feel at MGH.

Oh, but please go to Hopkins instead >> I'm holding out with hope for a WL today.

no i meant the hard copy acceptance letter...i got an email yesterday indicating that a letter was on its snaily way, and that there would be form to send back to them to hold your place in the class

Does anyone know what neighborhoods med students who don't live in vanderbilt generally rent in?

People who dont live in Vandy usually live in mission hill, coolidge corner, or brookline. That's kinda it i think, until you hit third year and people scatter more based on their hospital location. Some people also live in cambridge, tho they are fewer.

is there any reason people wouldn't live in vandy? a friend of mine may get into HBS, in which he may want to room together (if i go as well)...but i dont wanna miss out on the dynamic in vandy...

Congratulations everyone. You won't regret choosing Harvard.

If anyone coming to second look is interested in orthopaedic surgery and wants an appropriate host send me a pm...I've got a queen-sized aerobed with your name on it.
