while i dont disagree about a possible negative impression, the fact that it will deter applicants is somewhat of a joke. So youre saying that if you are complete and interviewed in 2 weeks you wont go to penn state? I mean really? I am frustrated too somewhat since its going on 7 weeks but its just w/e...no need to really worry. I for one would love the chance to interview here and be accepted regardless of how long they take to complete me...now i feel ill nvr be complete so i dont think ill ever get that chance haha

I completely agree! More spots for the rest of us if some of you guys can't wait 😛
I am prepared to not hear anything until November or so if that is what it takes. I obviously can't be choosy like some people, but still.

If it was the only school I was excepted at, you bet I would go there. However, if accepted anywhere else I will not attend. It is last on my list, read my post. It most certainly is a negative impression. Like I said I feel this is equivalent to showing up 2-3 hours late to an interview. The schools we apply to have to impress us, just as we have to impress the schools. I guarantee they lose many exceptional applicants because of this.

I never said that I wouldn't attend the school if it was the only one I got accepted to. The fact that it takes more than 6 weeks to be complete here when I submitted the secondary on the very first day makes me wonder about their organization. If I'm lucky enough to receive an interview, then of course I'll go. It's just that I place other schools higher on the list than this school unless something about their curriculum or program really amazes me.

I'm not applying to Drexel this year for exactly this reason.

So true, Drexel is at least as slow as this school.

I don't understand the problem. Many schools, even those with just as many applicants, send out "complete" emails within days of all application materials being submitted. But schools like this take weeks to months, what gives?

i still want to give these slow schools the benefit of the doubt. i mean, the people who are running the admissions office are definitely not the same people who will be organizing your classes, advising, etc. they're basically just file clerks, so if they're cranky i can't really blame them, and i can't blame the school either.

Other schools are able to do it in a timely manner, no problem. Also, if something was wrong with the admissions office then the school should make changes to make it better. Thats what happens when something sucks, the boss changes it to make it better/more efficient....

Given that it's a state school, maybe they've lost some funding and had to cut down on the number of employees in the admissions office. Just a thought that I had - I know my own state school is notoriously slow.

I stopped by their admissions office yesterday and snapped this pic...

Ok, not really... But I'm starting to think this is what it has to look like there.

Hey guys, I just checked my status page randomly today and saw this message:

Our records indicate that your application is complete, and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee. You will be contacted by mail and/or phone during the next several weeks with its decision.

I submitted on 7/29 and never received a complete e-mail. The last time I checked my status page was about a week ago and it was still the "not complete" message.

I don't even have a junk mail filter, so I doubt the e-mail was lost. Anyways, just saying if you haven't yet, check your status page today.

nada here.........

so all this talk about psu being a little slow with communications... i was on their waitlist for fall 2009... until a WEEK ago when i received a letter saying i had been reviewed for a final time and they could not offer me a seat.... oh really?? haha..... i totally thought that more than a month into the start of classes i still might have a chance! 😉🙄

That sucks about you not getting in, but that email is priceless.

same here and i was complete about the same time. no email but its nice to finally be complete at least.

i had already long ago submitted my secondary for 2010 too.... maybe they saw that and were reminded to finish up their business from 2009........ just in case i was confused or anything

lol

As a back-up plan, we should submit our 2011 secondaries this week.

 alright alright, enough dissing poor psu..... now they're never going to let me in ha

i loved the place when i interviewed and was devastated to be waitlisted.... the admissions office people were extremely nice and seemed to be very organized.... hell, i still have the pretty name badge thing they made me on my bulletin board...... so not sure why they take so long with the emails/letters, but at least they gave me a chance last year. wish i coulda gotten in somewhere and it doesn't really look so great for this year, but such is life.

The year is still young. 😉 Plus, worst case scenario you could always do an SMP type program and apply for 2011. Your app looks solid, but I'm guessing it is just your GPA holding you back, but even with it, you still have a shot this year.

Hi All, Just a short note to try and put all you anxious penn state applicants at ease. Pennsylvania is the only state in the union to currently not have or passed a state budget. PSU medical school may or may not be having trouble with staff, wages, striking😡, etc. Most of the states public offices are. Seems to be no timely solution in sight, so...... be prepeared for a bit of a wait. Good Luck to all.:luck:

Penn State as a whole only receives about 6% of their budget from the state. The med school could be a much higher chunk but still I doubt there is any issue paying their employees. I think the delays have very little to do with the PA budget issue.

I'm bored so did some research of their 174,007,000 operating budget for 2010 only 1,055,000 is anticipated to come from the state. So state appropriations are less than one percent of their total budget.

I could totally be misreading all this info though. I am definitely not an accountant.

Complete and submitted 7/29. CH-YYYYYEEEA, almost 2 months! No email.

Thank goodness I decided to check one more time on the status page, otherwise I would have seriously said very unkind things on this forum about them. (At this point, I'd rather get a refund of my app fee.)

Yay just got an email!! My second interview! I was complete on 9/8, so this is pretty surprising.

Good luck, all!

Any current students have travel/interview advice?

i'm not a current student, but i did have a friday interview.

i had a really positive experience and liked the campus and overall feel from the students who were just gushing to meet us. the interviews (two) were really conversational. just be familiar with your AMCAS, as my interviewers had read my app very well, and we talked about things i was interested in and activities etc.

Yup! Sunday of all days. Great job on GU, Ohio, and Mount Sinai Blue! Very impressive.

I'm assuming there's no problem with finding a room overnight? Google shows an abundance of hotels in the area.

Interview Invite today here as well!! Yay!

Submitted: 7/27
Complete: 8/24
Interview Invite: 9/20

Invite via email, online status hasn't changed from complete status

Yeah, it took forever for them to change my status to "complete" as well. I submitted in the beginning of August and didn't get my complete status until the beginning of September. I also called them to check that they had everything they needed, and I got the email the next day. So they were probably like ok, ok we'll change your status to complete already, leave us alone. Haha, because this is what I got in my email:

Accordingly, the time necessary to process our many applications means that your application will not be reviewed immediately. We therefore request that you refrain from calling our office for your application status. This will enable us to process your application in the timeliest manner possible.

Aka, please don't call us. You're annoying. Have a nice day. 🙂

Haha, did anyone else's say that?

Yay interview invite! So excited, this is one of my favorite schools! 🙂

If interested in stats see MDApp. Blessings to everyone still persevering.

Well I was complete 9/8 and got no e-mail today... Looks like I'm out 🙁

Invited today as well. Complete in late july. 3.7 overall, 3.6 sci, 31 mcat.

I was completed on Sept 4th and have not heard from them at all either. Their complete e-mail pretty much said that they review application "in rolling or random order" so it looks like they really review them randomly regardless of when you were completed.

Submitted 7/28
Complete 9/8
Interview invite 9/20

I just got a letter via snail mail that says that I have been placed in the "Continue to Review category."

Lame...

Why do they have us call in between specified times if we're just going to get the busy tone 🙁

Submitted 8/2, still not complete, tried calling but we all know how that goes...

Still no word. I guess technically I didn't submit until Sept. 1 when my new MCAT came out. Probably will be November until Hear from them...

Does anyone know if anyone actually gets an interview off of the "Continue to Review" list? I feel like this might just be a polite rejection
