I mean, if you ask a Stanford student whether Stanford has good qualities, you can expect him or her to say yes, Stanford has good qualities

what else would the response be... "yeah, you're right, UCSF is much better in those areas, I don't know why I came here"
👍

Now waht about giving me an interview first....

Accepted JUST NOW by phone call. It is difficult to type. I am so excited. I loved it so much here.

Interviewed 9/24. Posting so that others can expect the same lovely luck. :luck:

Thank you all! I think it is my first choice at this point on sheer gut feeling. But things may be complicated with money and all that, but I feel very lucky to have such complications.

CONGRATS PREMAD, PHYSICALMUSIC, MD2010HOPEFUL, AND ANYONE ELSE LURKING BUT HASN'T POSTED WHO HAS BEEN ACCEPTED RECENTLY!!! I'M SO EXCITED TO HAVE AWESOME PEOPLE POTENTIALLY JOINING US HERE NEXT YEAR!!! 😀😀😀😀

Please let me know if you have any questions about Stanford. I'm very happy here, but am a strong believer that the application cycle is about finding the right match. I'm not part of admissions, but obviously you've not only impressed them with your achievements, but they must also think you're a great fit for Stanford's unique culture!!! I'll try and provide whatever information I can to help you see whether or not you agree with our admissions team's assessment that Stanford would be a great fit for you when you're making your decision. Though, I really hope you end up agreeing, because we'd love to have you!!!!! 😍

Good luck everyone in the upcoming months at whatever stage of the application cycle you're at (for those that haven't heard back for even an interview, don't stress, I didn't hear back until February and interviewed and got in in March of last year).

Congrats to everybody accepted. Still hoping for an interview here. I was about to send a letter of interest but it sounds like they're not so hot on that. GL to everybody still waiting.

:luck: Did you interview in September and/or did they tell you you'd hear back in December? For me, they'd said I'd probably hear in December, but to call if I hadn't heard by the end of January. And, I know that they at least to interviews in 'batches' (not sure about decisions) as I wasn't able to reschedule my September interview into late October because I was apparently in the first batch.

:shrug:Stanford is mysterious. Hope that you get good news soon!

I woke up to an interview invite!! I was complete in September for MSTP (rejected for that btw). Super excited! They had several interview dates in January available.

Has anyone had any luck w/ student hosts? I emailed them two weeks ago but am yet to hear back and getting nervous about planning this trip!

I keep trying to call, email, and leave voicemails for Stanford because I'll be in the area and I want to know if I'll get an interview invite or not...no response back yet. What is the best way to contact them?

P.S. Congrats to those who already got in!

Complete and utter shock. Interview Invitation. SO HAPPY!

P.S. There were only 2 dates available upon logging in. Tuesday in Mid-January and Wednesday in Mid-February. Is it advantageous to interview earlier? Also, I'm from the East Coast and would REALLY prefer a Monday or Friday so I could have time to visit the area and San Francisco...without having to miss like 3 days of work. Can you call to request a date or should I grab the early one fast?

I would go with the earlier date since they are rolling admissions. You can check out the school/area on the second-look weekend if accepted.

No dates available for me.

Office closed for "2 weeks due to the holidays"

...fail!

Yup! Same problem now. What should we do?

received an invite this morning. Couldn't schedule anything! No one picking up at the admissions office either! is everyone home for break? why would they send out invites and then just go home?

This may be already in here, but does anyone know how many people interview at Stanford vs how many get in?

NM:
473 interview
172 accepted

from usnews

So about 40% acc. ratio from interviews.

Full Breakdown, I like numbers.

Overall: 6567 applied, 473 interviewed, 172 were accepted, 86 enrolled (7% interviewed, 36% accepted). Overall: 2.6% applicants accepted...Odds 1/40 of being accepted. Yikes!

Instate: 2467 applied, 178 interviewed, 55 were accepted, 32 enrolled (7% interviewed, 31% interviewees accepted)
Out of State: 4100 applied, 295 interviewed, 117 were accepted, 54 enrolled (7% interview, 40% interviewees accepted)

Wow, do you have those numbers for UCSF too? I just found mine from earlier post...

Oh no!!! I'm so sorry to hear that! Don't be nervous, we'll find a host for your trip! It has just been an awkward time for us with finals and holidays. I'll follow up with the hosting people in general, but if you feel comfortable PMing me your info, I'll ask on your behalf. Look forward to your visit to show you how awesome Stanford is!!!!

Lemme know if anyone else is having any issues I can help with. 😀 Happy holidays!!!!!!

Hello from a thread lurker. I got an interview offer today, but I can't figure out how to schedule an interview (and it seems like everyone in their office left for holiday break or something and are unreachable by phone or email)...

I went to the interview schedule page where it says you have to "click on the dates with hyperlinks to select your interview date." Well, none of the dates on the calendar HAVE hyperlinks...any suggestions? I tried plowing through this thread but didn't see anything on a cursory look..sorry if someone already answered this.

My conclusions are:
a) somehow ALL interview days filled up all the way through the end of April. How cruel.
b) something's wrong with the site/directions.

Thanks!

Did you click the arrow to go to the next month? If so then all of the dates must have been filled. It seems like Stanford sent out a ton of invites all at once and it was just first-come first-serve.

Options "a" doesn't make sense; the ppl on admission aren't ******ed. They would not give interviews to us if they didn't have a day to interview. I had the same problem. They are just closed for the holidays. Call back on Jan 4th to schedule. That's what I'm doing. Chill out and enjoy the holidays.

They just need to activate later dates. They hand out invites til the end of March so the slots have obviously not filled up. I logged in exactly when I got the email and had the option to choose one of 3 days (2 in January, 1 in February). After about 20 minutes that was reduced to 2, and 30 minutes to zero. Considering there are 4 people/day, that means at max there were 12 interview slots filled yesterday...so it's not surprising they went quickly.

Log back in January 4th, and I'm sure it'll be fixed.

Why not without some hiccups, this was still one of the best christmas presents ever 😍

I agree with this. I was luckily holding my email in hand (on my phone) when I got the invite. A few minutes later and I would not have been able to schedule it.

For those who got interview invites, congrats! Please do not freak out. I believe that it is true that we only open a few dates at a time. Yes, the office is still closed. Please do not worry; it will all be sorted out. I can't wait to meet all of you when you visit. 🙂

Thanks. I figured something like this had happened but just wanted to make sure. Happy holidays!

Likewise! Any insights about why you like/don't like Stanford. How's Palo Alto (besides being beautiful)? And, do get into SF often? I assume you're a current student?

I'm not sure Lady comes on here that often, but I'll send her an e-mail to let her know you asked about what she likes/dislikes, so expect a reply soon. I can talk a little about Palo Alto though.

Palo Alto is a small suburb. There is a downtown area that has a few bars and 2 clubs that we frequent quite regularly. It is like a cross between a really ritzy town and a college town. Lots of boutique shops, nice restaurants and stuff like that juxtaposed with a place like Miyake's that serves sushi on boats during the day, but then has a disco ball and college students on chairs screaming "Sake Bomb!" at night. It is pretty, quaint, and safe, but has enough stuff to do if you're not looking to make much effort.

However, Palo Alto is small, so I think students venture out pretty regularly. I know a lot of my classmates go out hiking at nearby national parks, some visit vineyards, some go surfing, some visit museums in SF and around. I'm personally a foodie so I go to eat a lot in SF (SF is like a 40 minute drive), as well as in neighboring towns (Castro St. in Mountain View is notorious as a ethnic restaurant strip and has the best gelato I've had, Cupertino has great Asian food, and there's other things scattered about).

In terms of nightlife, SF is fun, but it is sometimes hard to organize a trip because you have to get DD's and stuff. Not to say it isn't done, but it just isn't done THAT often (I went 3 times last quarter with classmates, and there was 1 trip I didn't go on). I think those of us that do go up to SF to party more regularly have friends up there to crash with, which makes it much easier.

Hope that helps!

Apok, you should talk to Shemarty about this. She went to undergrad at Stanford and I think did research there during her year off as well. It seemed from last year's thread that Stanford was her #1 choice, so I'm sure she knows a lot about Stanford med. And being at UCSF, she knows quite a bit about the program there. I think she'd be your best bet.

Hi Stanford thread!

I haven't been here in awhile, and I was just skimming the thread today because I'm on winter break and had some time to kill 🙂 I'm about 2 weeks late in replying to this particular post, but I figure I'd just write a quick note anyway 🙂

I went to Stanford for undergrad and did a lot of stuff at Stanford Med during my year off (more details in my MDApps). Stanford was my #1 choice going into the application cycle, because I was familiar with the med school, students, faculty, free clinics, etc. I knew I'd be happy there. I was comfortable with the whole environment having spent 5 years there. I didn't really even consider other med schools until I ended up getting waitlisted at Stanford. Soon after, I got into UCSF and started seriously thinking about the pros/cons of the two schools. I was debating about whether I wanted to write Stanford a letter of intent, or withdraw altogether. I ended up withdrawing from the Stanford waitlist on May 15th and chose UCSF.

As FutureScaresMe said, anybody can feel free to PM me if you want to hear my personal perspective about UCSF and Stanford. I have enjoyed my time at both places immensely, and I'm sure I would have been happy at either med school.

GOOD LUCK to everybody applying this year!

I have the exact opposite story as Shemarty.

I worked at UCSF for a year, it was my top choice, got waitlisted, with a stroke of luck got into Stanford and I am here right now. Couldn't be happier; and I feel like somehow the admissions gods knew what was right for me without me knowing. If someone wants the flip side of the coin perspective, let me know.

What I can say generally is that the schools are VERY different, especially in terms of student experience. I think they are only compared to each other because they are geographically close, there are a lot of collaborations, and they are both good schools. I don't think there is a 'rivalry' or anything, both are proud of themselves for their unique qualities and respect each other. If you are looking for a Stanford rival think Cal.
