LOTS of people in the downstate facebook group are looking for apartmentmates! Get in contact with them! Im not sure if you know but there are two facebook groups out there. One has been set up by admissions but here is the other one http://www.facebook.com/?sk=2361831622#!/group.php?gid=127984317230064

Good luck finding a place!

just called the office and the woman who answered said movement of alternate list is "extremely slow" trying to hold out hope but idk how realistic that is.

thanks for this information! lets keep our fingers crossed!

People who havent gotten into medical school are waiting for movement off the list. So get off your fence and make a decision. (By the by I am in, so I have no stake in telling you to grow up, other than its the right thing to do.)

hahaha i couldn't agree more. i wouldn't wish this kind of torture on my worst enemy

Hey! i just started looking for a laptop to purchase before school starts. I found a decent laptop but was just wondering if battery life is important or if we'll be able to keep the laptops on their chargers?
Anyone have any suggestions for a laptop? 😀

So a few entries back, GOLD1 mentioned that there are about 169 members in the official downstate facebook group. Can any current downstate students speak to whether it is normally this high. Last year around this time there were only about 140 members. 169 out of 185 makes it seem like the class is filled up for good. That is unless a large number of upperclassmen or people with multiple acceptances are joining the facebook group.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm currently holding ZERO expectations that there will be any more significant waitlist movement. I'm not being pessimistic. It's just that, with no expectations, I can't be disappointed.

I lost hope and started reapplying. Hopefully Downstate will stop me before I do too many secondaries .

Considering this is my third time applying with each past cycle seeing myself placed on the waitlist and eventually rejected, i think i know how everyone on the waitlist would feel. i'm not going to make a snap decision on a place that i'm going to spend 4 years of my life in. Sorry that I'm not having an extremely idle summer twiddling my thumbs, waiting to make these decisions, and checking this forum constantly. anyway, i declined the offer and i received a call in the morning.

I completely understand where you are coming from; it is a big decision and you shouldn't rush into it. That being said, I wish you luck in your next four years in SUNY Upstate (is that where you decided to go?), I'm sure someone who had the passion to endure 3 cycles such as yourself, will make a wonderful physician.

thanks. and yes, as of now it's suny upstate, unless i get another call from elsewhere. good luck yourself and let me know if you have any questions.

As I continue to stalk the admissions office - yesterday the woman said the altenate list is "moving slowly, but moving" and she does expect movement before aug16th. I guess take that for what its worth (which may not be much)

I have a friend who got into DState a couple of days before orientation...don't count yourselves out until the very end!

If you are referring to the Official Downstate facebook group class of 2014, then the number of members are not a good indication. For my class, only about 87 members (not 140) joined the official group even after school started.

IDK how large this year's class size is, but last year was ~190.

anyone interested in getting together a team from Downstate for a charitable bike ride around Manhattan for MS: http://bikenyn.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=BIKE_NYN_Homepage

the date is sunday, october 3, i'm thinking the 30 mile route may be most feasible (as opposed to the 66 or 100 mile options), but i think the designation is left to the individual. please pm to let me know if you're in, and we can come up with a team name. early registration ends august 4th ($35 registration fee), afterwards it's $50 until September 24, and $100 after that.

i just talked to the admissions office today and the woman said the list is at a standstill 🙁

🙁🙁🙁 my interviewer told me that its best to reapply- she said she has not seen such a slow movement in a while....

just my luck, every school I was waitlisted at had uncharacteristically slow waitlist movement...

Do any current students have an opinion on what textbooks MS1's should and shouldn't buy from the required/recommended list?

Don't...just don't. I know I'm supposed to say that everyone studies differently and such, but honestly the only textbooks i needed this year were Netter's and Grant's. The notes are so comprehensive that you'll be able to do fine.

That being said, if you decide that I am completely wrong and the books help a lot, then come up to my room and I'll apologize with a beer 😛

Which Grant's do you mean:

Grant's Dissector, P.W. Tank (14th Ed.) Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins 2008

OR

Grant's Atlas of Anatomy, by A.M.R. Agur and A.F. Dalley (12th Ed.), Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins 2008

OR Both?

I assume by Netters you mean:
Atlas of Human Anatomy, F.H. Netter (5th Ed.) Elsevier 2008I've also heard that a brain atlas is very helpful for the neuro blocks. What do you think?

So the Grants Dissector is required since anatomy labs are modified versions of it and reference the pages constantly. As for the atlas, you can use either Grants or Netters depending on which you prefer. If you want to see what Netter's looks like before you buy it, you're more than welcome to drop by and look at mine. Are you dorming?

SoOoooooOOOO I got into Downstate this afternoon HA!...I'm currently in New Orleans doing a post-bach program through Tulane...BUT i withdrew today (from the post-bach) and will be moving out of my apartment here tomorrow...This is going to be a looooong drive. That's clutch, Fish. Congrats!

Yeah building 825. I guess I will take a look at both books soon. Do you know which one of the two is the more popular one?

I hear second years often try to sell their books, though I'm not sure if they usually sell these two.

There's a chance the dorms have openings from what I have heard. At this point, I would even consider living with non-med students. Craigslist works well for finding a place ASAP. Did you post this on the facebook group too?

Netter's seemed more popular. And yea I know I'm not selling mine until after the boards. Also welcome to 825! (We're the cool building 😎)

wow congrats. i wish i was you right now.

congratulations, that is amazing. i hope this is some indication of last minute movement...

i think today was the last day to hear... anyone hear anything?

edit: so actually i just called the admissions office because i'm mildly obsessive and asked when the last day to hear about acceptance is and she said monday the 23 (the first day of class) is the last possible day to hear. this week is orientation and if someone drops out they go to the alternate list for people.

Lol, appears that way for me, too. You should upgrade to headhunters and use the beserker ability. Also, don't forget to put down healing wards and stasis traps; I really think that's where you went wrong this cycle.

Now you're speaking my language. 😀
