This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
thanks for the kind words Danny! I hope you get interviewed again this year too.

My SA essay Q last year was "How do you think Dental schools should evaluate the ethics of dental school applicants?" Easy Q for some to answer but for me I was stumped. I honestly don't remember what I put but I was the second to last one to finish the essay. Maybe I bombed it and that's why SA rejected me even when my interviews were a piece of cake. Why couldn't I get "describe three of your extracurricular activities?"---> what a joke of a Q that other applicants got last year!

mamelons, I think we can't make any definite conclusions regarding how the schools choose people to interview because I have slightly better stats except for PAT (19/19/14 with a 19 in both RC and QR) and I didn't get invited to Baylor last cycle nor yet this cycle so to say that they "want lots of upper level science" is BS in a way (it has to be partially true cuz a billion other people said the same thing, but I think that it is just Baylor's "leave us alone" generic response) because all of my classes junior and senior year of college were all upper level science (including human physiology I and II which I took for a grade and WAS NOT required for my microbio major) plus I took upper level science classes at rice Univ as a grad student with the undergrads and did quite well (even though without being curved any differently).

sorry mamelons for coming off as belligerent, I don't mean to, I'm just frustrated with myself for not delivering on the DAT last year and having to study for it again (which I've been for the past 2 months). I do like to tip my hat off to you for being in dental school, it is quite an accomplishment. I do feel like this cycle is moving very very slow, but last year I submitted my application in mid-Sept and got SA and Hou interviews within two weeks, but this year I submitted way early (6/18/08) before the schools were really on the application review move. I just keep praying for a miracle: I'm still on Houston's waitlist until 8/18/08 when they start class. I'm already focused on a late DAT retake.

I understand what you are saying, and there is no way of knowing. I was just stating what I had heard from a few of my friends who either interviewed and were not accepted or did not interview. I do not know what your GPA is like, but I do think my high GPA (3.82 cumulative, 3.91 science) helped offset my average DAT score (20 RC, 19 GC, 19OC, 17BIO, 14 QR, 15 PAT). I wish I knew how applicants were evaluated. Sometimes I wonder if numbers are even as big a role as we all may think. I will say this though, and this is only my opinion, but at my Baylor interview 2 years ago, I was asked a question "What do you think your evaluators said about you in your LOR?" So I think they look highly on LOR. Not saying you would have had a questionable LOR, but it could be a reason, I don't know. Keep your head up, and best of luck to you.

On another note, schools are moving at the same pace, I think it is just that not everyone who has interviews posts on, or even knows about SDN. Remember, the people on here are only a small sample of the total applicant pool.

San Antonio has their first round of interviews Monday, 10-12 interviewees.

And to the those who asked about the essay for the San Antonio interview... it is nothing to stress over. I think they have a rotating pool of questions they pull from, and so maybe 5 interview dates will all get the same question or something like that. My question was something along the lines of "What do you think the most difficult thing will be for you transitioning into dental school?"

mamelons, impressive GPA 😀!!! I think it did offset your low QR and PAT. My undergrad GPA is 3.56, science 3.42, graduate 3.5 (MPH and MA). Very average especially for accepted applicants so I think the DS are expecting 20+ from me. My scores (BIO 19, G Chem 20, O Chem 18, PAT 14, QR 19, RC 19). So true about Sdn, we only represent a small sample of the whole applicant pool...

Random thought- Houston is notoriously humid and hot, and August is generally the worst month in terms of heat. Do you think Houston might be holding out on sending invites and waiting to begin interviewing in September so applicants are not scared away by the weather? Sounds smart to me haha.

I wonder what it would feel like to have sweet enough stats that schools were waiting to send you an interview invite until the weather got pleasant enough to not scare you away?

maybe they were just showing some hometown love and waited till my application was submitted haha! ok fine, obviously not the case, but i can still dream 👍

well since i really want to be part of this awesome thread im gonna ask some questions i could probably look up on my own. bear with me fellow texans.

so i finally submitted all my stuff to TMDSAS (this includes fee, photos, etc..), how long should i expect to wait until its sent out?? 2-4 weeks?? from there, how long is it until schools usually send invites??

thanks ppl!

They actually processed my stuff pretty fast. Less then 2 weeks for me.

wow thats awesome, when did you submit though??

They received the certification page, fee, and photos on June 30th (I sent them maybe 2 days before that) and they processed my app and sent it out on July 2nd.

I still haven't taken the DAT so they sent it without those scores.

Yeah I was kind of surprised when I looked the dates up just now.

I'll need luck on the DAT so thanks. Your notes are helping, they're nice because I can go over them during spare time at work since I sit in front of a computer. It's alot less obvious then if I was sitting at my desk immersed in huge fat DAT prep books!

Woah. I was just joking around. Although if you have ever been to or lived in Houston, the weather is no joke haha. Baylor and San Antonio, until today, had been the only schools to send out interviews. So a few of us were speculating if this year was slower or not, so I thought I would offer up a stupid reason just for fun.

I sent my app 7/9, it posted as received on 7/16, my app was sent to the schools 7/23, and I got my first letter confirming Baylor had my stuff yesterday, 7/31. So about a two week turn around between being sent and the schools having your stuff. I think they are doing pretty good on time.

Now if only the d-schools would just speed the process up. Drawing this thing out for 6 months is crap!

So besides the obvious answer of whoever says "yes"... Does anyone already know what school they want to go to?

My preference would be:
1. San Antonio
2. Baylor
3. Houston

Why couldn't the dental adcoms just allow us to determine who gets to go where? lol 😀 (i.e. Shawn can take a SA spot as long as I get Houston!)

Hey all. Just received my Houston interview today through email! Its scheduled for Aug 25th! good luck to everyone!!

1. Houston (born and raised)
2. It's a toss up between SA and Dallas..

I also received my interview invite from Houston today through email! 😛 It's in Sept. though.

Hey fellow SDNR's, count me in on this cycle too! I recognize quite a few names from last year so I see I am not alone as a re-applicant. Another 4 months of waiting for the much anticipated Dec. 1 D-day! Good luck everybody and thank goodness if your a Texas resident! No offense if your not (it's just harder to get in-but not Impossible!)

Hi guys,

I just registered to this forum, although I have been lurking for a while. Anyway I have a question that I hope you guys can answer.

I just finished my DAT on 7/26 and sent out my score on the 28th (also faxed the unofficial report card to Houston and SA). I have everything else in (SA and Baylor have indicated that they received my application a month ago, but not Houston, is that normal?).

So I would just like to know in your experience how long will it take for me to hear from them (hopefully interview invites and not rejections).

Thanks in advance.

Yes, seems pretty standard. Houston is last to give you notice, while SA and Baylor are the first. The early applicants just got emails yesterday for interviews at Houston and I think that is a record. Last year I didn't hear anything from Houston until they sent me a rejection letter in May.

All the school have started their invites. I think SA has their first group interviewing Aug 11th. So if you have the grades, DAT scores and etc... then it could be any day. That's the bad thing about the process, you can never tell when or if it will happen.

Good luck!

TMDSAS is so quite these days. no activity around?!

If Tx schools receive a complete application by the end of september....would they judge the applicant MUCH harder and only grant interviews to near perfect stats?

In case anyone who hasnt submitted the TMDSAS application is wondering how fast they are moving - I thought Id let you know that they are FLYING 👍👍!! They received my application fee, photos, and cert page on Friday Aug 1st and mailed my application today Wednesday Aug 6th!! woot woot 😀

Now I just need to get interviews...

Anyone else get any interviews recently?

On Friday, I received an interview for UTDB (Houston) for August 25th.

Like always- best of luck to everyone!

Just got an email from Houston today saying that they received my app. Not that it really matters, more importantly I just wanted to revitalize the thread. Any news out there? Danny, and interviews yet?

One question, has anyone done the Baylor summer predental program? If you have, what did you think?

Are you a resident? If so then I think you've got pretty good chances. San Antonio seems to consistently have a really high average GPA so I don't know about there but I think your DAT scores are great and to a certain degree offset your lower GPA.

On the GPA thing by the way, I have no room to talk. Mine's a 3.25 so I'm not trashing you, we're certainly in the same low GPA boat.

Its ok Bro. I know my GPA sucks, so I appreciate the truth. I dont need any sugar coating. yea, I am tx resident.

IMO, if you are Texas resident, you will hear from schools, don't worry
good luck for your interviews. 👍

only news about my application . TMDSAS reicived my DAT score and I assume the schools have my DAT scores too. honestly alanan, I am thinking for retake, my reading score is realy low even with TS=20 AA=19 I don't think it is any chance for interview this year with my reading score 🙁

Wow, have you contacted the schools and asked them what they think about RC? I wouldn't give up just yet, it's still early right?

I am not going to give up, I had an interview last year with low reading score. but what I am planing is: if I don't get any interview offer before October( the ealiest time for retaking) I will retake the DAT and fax it immidately to schools.

Thundercatz- As a TX resident, I think you should get some interviews. Your DAT scores are solid. Add in a stellar LOR, a quality PS, and some extracurriculars and you should be good.

Danny- Good idea on the DAT, but it is still early in the process. I would be shocked if you do not hear from wherever you interviewed last year soon. I guess make sure you do not select TX schools if you have to register for the DAT again. Just so you can see your score and decide on a course of action. I have read on here that RC is important, but really did not believe it until now. We are pulling for ya, man! 😀

thanks for advise, that is a good idea, lets see 👍

I would think trying to rush a DAT at the last second just for the improved RC score might backfire if you scored lower on something you rocked before. I doubt a low RC score is going to hurt you when you have strong science scores. The science score is the most looked at score by the schools.

Of course, as we all know from being on here, the schools are weird on how they pick people. Someone with 4.0 gpa and 20+ DAT doesn't automatically get accepted... there are plenty of people shot down with perfect scores and plenty of people accepted with crappy scores. It all comes down to the interview. Get that and you have a 50/50 chance. Better than Vegas! haha!

I agree shawn but low RC as 14 is sucks even with 23 in Gchem and 21 in Bio and 18 in OChem. I keep this option (retaking) just in case. I can not afford to wait one more year.

WOOOOO...

Finally mailed out my cert. page/app. fee/pictures.

Shooooooooo.. I wish it were that simple, hahaha.

Good luck to the rest of you guys.. No more stressing out... TIME TO PLAYYYY WOOOOOOO.

I was wondering what some of you think my chances would be to get accepted into San Antonio? My gf is going to med school there and there isn't ANY other school that I even really want to go to aside from UTHSCSA. My extra curric are fine...shadowing, volunteer work, etc. I have taken 44 hrs adv (3000+) level science and my dat aa and ts scores are ok (See my predents page for the rest). The only thing that worries me is my pat and qr scores. I have considered retaking the dat...but that would mean I would actually have to study for it this time.I would appreciate anyones opinion.

IMO, you won't have any problem for geting to San Antonio. San antonio doesn't care about PAT, and your math is ok ( I had interview there with PAT=15) good luck 👍

Im interviewing tomorrow at SA, i got a 15 qr. All your other scores are good, just be patient. No need to retake, there is a chance you might get a lower score which would just be a waste of time.

thanks txgangsta, btw what were ur other stats if u dont mind?
