2009 wait-list blues thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Waitlisted at American. My only interview. Emailed my POI who got right back to me. So now I just need to wait...

I guess that is part of the "wait" part of wait list. Woof.

I want this so badly I will pay everyone who got accepted if they don't go. Given, I am broke... so I can only afford to pay them a quarter... guess that wont work.

I'm waitlisted at Eastern and Southern Illinois-Child Track.
I'm hoping a spot will open up!
good luck to everyone 🙂

I'm the first alternate for Dr. Brooks lab and the first alternate for Dr. Sanford's lab. Ahhh.

So this whole "asking how you could improve your app" thing, is that okay to do when you're waitlisted, or should you wait until you're rejected? I kind of want to get that over with 😀

My personal recommendation would be to wait. Hard, but you don't want to do anything at this point that could at all jeopardize or put a possible bias against your waitlist status. If you get in, then your question is kind of moot, you know?

But you could ask those questions if there are other sites you've been rejected from...

AAAAAHHHH!

I am waitlisted at a THIRD school!!
What is going on here? There is a definite pattern. I don't get accepted I just get waitlisted.
This is soooo frustrating. 😕

At least the third school hinted there is good possibility someone will decline. :xf:

block: I'm sorry, I know how much that program means to you.

Yeah, that's what this program did as well--said they're predicting I'll eventually get an offer but you can't really know for sure, obviously.

Best of luck!

Speaking of American, I wonder if I should ask what my status is there. I haven't heard a thing.

i will be accepting an offer today - which means i'll be pulling out of the following schools post-interview:

Fordham
Suffolk
American
Univ. of Washington (actually pulling out my app before even hearing back post-interview)
Vanderbilt

and BTW - those waiting on vanderbilt they are still sending out acceptances, it sounds like with $ and some departmental issues acceptances are coming out very slowly... (I called the grad secretary and my POI)

SourPatch, I kept meaning to ask where you're going but always forgot 😀 So can I ask now?

Holy ****, just accepted off of waitlist.

It does happen!!!!

Congrats! Do you know what number you were on the waitlist, or for your POI? Also, how long did you have to wait?

That's great 🙂! Wait-listing has pretty much been my story so far this year. I am waiting on one more school...Thanks for giving me some hope!

I agree.....This isn't exactly the time you want a POI or admissions person combing over your application materials only looking for weaknesses...

For this school, I don't know what number I was on the waitlist. The letter was vague- at first I interpreted it that I was first on the list. Good luck!!

Yeah, that's how the program I'm waitlisted at does it (accepting to the program and not the POI)

Thanks, good luck to you for this other program as well 😀

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted! Luck happens! 😀

My situation is still not clear...I still haven't heard from my program!!!!. It doesn't make any sense... May I ask you, guys, to be honest with me and tell me what do you think is happening.

Once again my story in short: got my interview on February the 13th, last interview was on February the 20th. The program director told applicants including me that would know the results in 2 weeks time. Two weeks were over last Friday. I e-mailed the director on Saturday - no response. I e-mailed another professor who was interviewing me, she e-mailed me back saying that I have to wait and that I would hear from the director pretty soon. Still waiting. I don't want to call them: I am afraid to irritate them.

What does it mean? If they rejected me, why they can't just send me an e-mail... Any ideas?

Has anyone had similar situation?

PS There are no POIs in this program. But this program is my best match.

Minichka- I went through a similar thing myself. I had to email and ask in order to get an idea of where I stood. And I basically was told i still have to wait (ah WAIT lists...).
You could always call the department secretary and ask if initial offers have been sent out without giving your name (just say you applied). However, remember that it might be better just to wait. I called and was told offers went out so I thought that I wasn't in at all, only to find out I'm on the wait list. We will all find out eventually. Probably within the next month for all of us. Personally, I couldn't wait. But that is me.

Cara- Thanks a lot. I think everyone on this site is in the same position- aka going kinda crazy. And even though I don't really know anything regarding my application status, it still is better to know that wait list than nothing. So now I get to hope that everyone hates my top program... its kind of funny really.
I love your Harry Potter idea by the way.

Blockuvb, thanks for your encouragement. I actually lost all my hope. I have been trying to put myself into a "don't care mood", but it doesn't work! When I wake up in the morning I immediately rush to my computer to check my inbox. What if they have sent me an e-mail when I was still asleep? I check it many times during the day, and I check spam also. Am I not getting crazy?

If I am waitlisted, then I would pray that someone who got the initial offer would get another offer which is better for him /her. After all who would like to live in a small city in Oklahoma, and be menaced by tornadoes all year round! Who would like to have this for 5 years? 😉

I know, I go from not caring one minute to really caring the next. I also get excited by the idea of getting an email, but then I'm like "But what if it's a rejection??" I'm really scared to email them in two weeks or so 😳

Haha, the funny thing is that UND does get a lot of turn-downs because of its location (it's REALLY cold!)

Oh I am sure it is all the same for all of us. I started by waiting for a phone call. Then email. Then hoping it was coming by snail mail. All the while anxiously checking SDN for news on the universities I applied to. No matter how I tried I couldn't kill that little sliver of optimism (I even tried to drown it in chocolate and cheese which was lots of fun). Optimism may be the death of us all.
I know that if I were accepted to tornados/cold I would turn it down. East coast for me baby. Hope that makes you all feel better. 😉
Ill see you all bright and early when I check SDN in the morning!

Okay, so I'm waitlisted at one school. In the email the DCT asked us to keep him current about our availability and interest. Do you think that this means I should email him to let him know I'm still available? What should I say? Also, how often should I do this, every week until April 15th? I'm not sure how to proceed with this! Thanks!

Thank you Cara Susana for starting this thread!😀

No problem! It's certainly helped me 😀

Well, if it's your first choice or your only option, I would say that, yes, you are interested and available. I'd probably check back every two weeks or so, but there may be others who disagree.

Nooo you should definitely not e-mail anyone every week until the 15th- you will come across as anxious and annoying, which equates to being desperate. You want to seem appealing to your school of choice and you don't want to ruin your chances by giving them something else to consider negatively. Simply reply to the e-mail, thank the DCT for contacting you, express that you are very interested in the program , have not yet accepted any other offers, and still would like to be considered for admission. End it by saying that you would appreciate a status update as soon as it becomes available. That should be sufficient. My personal opinion would be to then not initiate contact until around 4/1, unless you have been made another offer in the mean time.

4/1 sounds good--that's when I'll email again. Thanks for the advice, even if it wasn't directed at me. 😀

Holy ****, just accepted off of U Kansas Child Clinical waitlist.

It does happen!!!!

congratulations! when did you learn that you were on their waitlist? *before* or *after* telling you you were accepted...?

I am waitlisted at my 3rd school. But it seems like there are a lot more acceptances happening lately and more people letting offers go, hopefully this waitlist group will start having results soon!

I found out I was waitlisted 5 days before I was accepted.

Found out I was "alternate listed" at my top choice school. The letter says that the list is unranked and goes until the first week of September? I have never heard of that before and its most definately discouraging!

Yikes, that's really terrible! Sorry to hear--maybe I should stop complaining about having to wait 5 weeks now. 😉

Yea man, I haven't even heard from either school I interviewed with. At least you know right? There's always a silver lining in different lame life limbos.

Hey guys, wanted to share news with you! I have just hear from the director of me program, she has e-mails me! I am a second alternate!

She has written the following: "I apologize if you didn't receive my e-mail a couple of weeks ago (NEVER RECEIVED HER E-MAIL 🙁. I have been trying to reach you by phone as well but there is no answering machine (I ASKED THEM TO CONTACT ME BY MY CELL! And they didn't!"). You are a top alternate for our doctoral program in Counseling Psychology. We could be making you an offer here very soon. You are our second alternate (only person ahead of you).

I am officially on the waiting list! 😎

Hope it will turn out well for me....

Cheers to everyone on this list! Cara Susanna, thank you for creating the list!

So I emailed my POI at my top choice school about my status (at which 1st round offers have gone out), and she called me right back, saying that she did really like me and thought I was a great fit, but "we've made one other offer", and that she'd have to wait to see about that person (before telling me anything about getting in).

Should I take that to mean I'm first alternate for her lab? And does that mean if that person accepts, I'm out, no matter how many other people turn them down? I just thanked her for getting back to me so quickly and for promising to keep me posted, but I didn't want to pester her with too many questions.

What do you guys think?:scared:

Something very similar happened to me. Added to that, I was told I still had a good chance of getting in. It wasn't clear to me at that point if I was waiting for one SPECIFIC person to say no or one of many people. Unfortunately, it was the former. The first person for my POI DID take the offer, and I was rejected. I think it depends on the school's mentorship model. If they have a strict mentorship model, it's likely that you really are waiting on that ONE spot (especially if that was your only or primary POI), assuming the POI is taking just one student. If it's not a strict mentorship model, you're in a totally different game (sounds like what cara is experiencing). Totally sucks either way, I know. It's really hard to wait. And ps. spending lots of time quietly willing the other person to say "no" doesn't work... 🙁

argh...i'm hoping its not a super strict mentorship model...they like people to have a "secondary" mentor and encourage people to work in more than one lab, even though you do start off with one specific mentor.

is it nuts that I'm trying to send out "good vibes" to whoever this girl is, hoping she gets into some fantastic other school that is her first choice with a million dollar stipend so she can turn this school down? hehe...

good vibes mystery girl...good vibes

Good news is that we now have less than 5 weeks until April 15. Only, uh, 4 weeks and 6 days. Not that I'm counting, or anything... 😉

Dude, I had a crazier idea: they gave us the email addresses of all of the interviewees, and I am SO tempted to email them and ask "Are you accepting your offer??" But I won't because that would be incredibly inappropriate. Plus, I'm sure that if they knew at this point, they would have gotten back to them already.

What I am wondering about right now is how soon they'll email us if we're rejected. Will they tell us one by one, or wait until it's all over?

Cara Susanna, have they told you that you will hear from them before April the 15th? I also wonder how much I will have to wait...😕

As to getting rejection e-mails, I really don't know... You see, I have JUST been confirmed that I am an alternate. I have been waiting for 2 LONG weeks to hear from them...And they did try to let me know about 2 weeks ago... So sometimes it depends upon technology, sometimes upon them personally...I guess they notify all applicants about acceptance/rejection... but how and when they do this I have no idea...

No, I'm still hoping the girl who formally accepted at my place backs out.🙂

They didn't tell me, but April 15th is the last day to accept an offer so I'm guessing that's the very latest most of us will hear anything.

Carlene86, I agree with you. For instance if my program doesn't have clearly defined POIs means that theoretically I have more chances than those who's program mentorship model presumes that each POI is selecting his/her own applicants. Theoretically it is so. But still this application/selection/acceptance process is a lottery, and those of us who will be accepted will just win a lottery ticket.

Crossing my fingers for all of us!:luck:

Many of you are complaining about waiting for someone to reject their acceptance so that you can move off the waitlist. Here is a helpful list of what you can do to speed that process along or at least put your mind at ease:

10. Put the person's picture up on your dart board -stress relief.
9. Make a voodoo doll of the person - a little black magic/ parapsychology can't hurt you.
8. Write some scandalous material about the person on facebook.
7. Marry the person - how do you think all of those husband wife professors combinations got started?
6. Link the person to a Ponzi scheme, if it could bring down Madoff, it could bring down anyone.
5. Identity theft: admit it, you would be willing to give up your idenity for their opportunity. Sorry to say, but the peson's identity is obviously more impressive anyway.
4. Become the person's client and wait until transference occurs - anything is possible in a Freudian/ psychodynamic world.
3. Spread a rumor using the internet that the POI is leaving.
2. Pay the person off - even with a tuition waver and a stipend you will most likely wind up in debt, a little bit more money is worth it.
1. Make the person a subject in your study - what has a higher dropout rate that particpicipants in a long term study!

I have several people ahead of me, GiantSteps--that's just too much effort!

😉

Found out today that I'm a "high alternate" for the only program where I got an interview...I'm pretty happy considering the fact that I thought I totally bombed my interview!

if any of you are on the waitlist for suffolk, i'm turning down the offer tonight. good luck!

Those who don't have a POI, how many students does your program takes?

Mine takes 8. I am the 2nd alternate, It means that 2 students out of 9 need to reject the offer to make them take me.

I wonder what is the probability that 2 applicants will reject offers....

The program takes 8 students, and I'm #5.

However, last year 12 people turned down offers. Historically, the minimum has been 3.

I also turned down Suffolk today, so hopefully people who are waiting hear good news soon!

Similarly, I turned down BC and Yeshiva yesterday.
