Don't give up. NEOUCOM traditionally has interviewed into the spring. However, you have to remember that NEOUCOM has an extremely limited number of seats for direct entry students, and is extremely selective in who they invite for interviews to fill those spots.

I was very impressed with NEOUCOM! Apparently a round of (the first maybe?) will be going out around christmas. Does anyone know how many people they usually interview? They had ~48 direct entry students last year, I wonder how many they will have this year??

FWIW, at the interview they said there are at least 15 seats this year as of last month. Students in their BS/MD program drop throughout the year so it may be more by now. Also, they have requirements for their BS/MD students and some don't make the cut. After Fall Semester/Quarter the first round of students not making the cut and needing an extra year will happen which opens more spots. This happens again after Winter Quarter (March-ish?), and again after Spring Semester/Quarter (May to June) with the Spring Semester cuts causing the bulk of the movement on the waitlist (since people only have one acceptance by this time)

This was my understanding from my interview a few weeks ago. They said we can expect to hear something within about a month whether it's A/R/W.

Hope this helps!

So is the update like a pre-interview hold or more like your still alive but unsure what will happen? Do thye go through a progressive elimination hence "your worthy for interview"?

The update is literally just "Hey we wanted to let you know we didn't forget you or your application." It doesn't mean you're being put on hold or you're probably going to get an interview.

I got the September and October updates, and then didn't get the November update. I was invited late November by telephone, and so it makes sense that I didn't get the December update.

Any direct entries heard anything yet? The adcom was supposed to meet before Xmas.

I got all of the updates except the december one, but I agree that it is meant as a "We haven't forgotten about you!" message so after my interview in November, it makes sense that I did not get an update.

I have not, heard anything either. They do not have a status check online, but nothing in my email nor snail-mail box.

Interviewed first week of December.
Heard they were deciding on the applicants who interviewed my week on December 22nd.

Waitlisted as of 1-4-2011.
Will update as I heard more 🙂

interviewed late November and also waitlisted as of a couple days ago.

anyone receive an interview invite recently? I know they will have another set of interviews sometime mid-January (according to their update letters). Best of luck to everyone!

was there a january update sent out?
I got oct nov and dec..but no january....

I didn't mean to imply that a January update was given out (although the last update happened at the end of December). I just was bringing to light the phrase, "we will be starting back up with interviews again in the middle of January" and assumed that it meant they were interviewing not sending out offers for mid-Jan.

Just got my rejection yesterday life sucks.......

Sorry to hear that, if you don't mind me asking was it via email or snail mail? I haven't heard anything from them except monthly updates so I'm kind of expecting a rejection.

when was the last time someone received an interview invite from NEOUCOM? I as well as many others are very curious about this answer.

For me, getting rejected from NEOUCOM was kind of like getting a zit on my nose. It's annoying and pretty embarrassing, but it doesn't really hurt and everyone gets it at some point.

Good luck to all!

It was through email and quite frankly PreMedHead it was annoying and embarrassing and totally was expecting an interview but in the email they said they had a lot of students from there BS/MD program going so why it take them so long? Now what?

So I got an interview invite from them today via email. I was a little surprised because I've been complete since August and wasn't really expecting to hear anything since it has been so long. I also can't seem to find much info on this school, has anyone heard anything positive/negative about it? I'd really like to know a current/former student's perspective on their experience there. Thanks!

congrats 7188ab! Thats awesome. If you dont mind me asking, when is your interview? From my searches, there really isn't much to find out there but their website and a couple links. From a student's perspective, I heard they love it but the city its in (Rootstown) doesn't have much going on.

Kind of unimpressed with their admissions office. Withdrawing. Interview unattended.

Thanks! Right now it's scheduled for the eighth but that it dependent on weather. I've also found that info is relatively hard to come by, but did get a similar opinion from a student. Are you interviewing there as well?

I haven't been lucky enough to be offered an interview yet. I just know a lot about the school/program because my younger brother is in the BS/MD program. Best of luck next week; hopeful this storm is long gone by the time you make your way to Ohio!

Invited for interview! Out of state! First MD interview, 3rd overall. Excited!

Has anyone heard anything lately? This thread has been quiet for a while now...

I hope you based your decision on something more than that. I'm sure you must have other options, but this comes off as highly pretentious to the many hopefuls in this thread.

To anyone else interested, I'm currently a direct entry MS3 at NEOUCOM and would be happy to answer any questions that I can. (I remember the stress when I was in your shoes... don't give up)

Got PM'd some questions and thought I'd post the answers in case anyone else had similar ones (keep in mind these are my personal opinions as a 3rd year student and don't pretend to believe everyone would agree with me):

Where do students live?

Most students either live on Marshcreek Ln. in Rootstown or the Highlands in Kent (it is right behind Salsitas mexican restaurant and one of the roads is Lightning lane if you want to google map it). Both places are just lots of duplexes rather than apartment style. I ended up living in a duplex in Ravenna with a few guys which was a double edged sword because I missed out on some of the random gatherings of friends because I didn't live right next to everyone, but at the same time I wasn't really distracted by having people over all the time.

How do students get research for the summers in between? One mentioned an application process, but do all they see are grades?

Research in the summer is fairly easy to attain, especially at the medical school. I ended up doing something at Aultman Hospital in Canton because it was more clinically focused. Summa and Akron General also have medical student specific programs that have an application process. If you go through the school, all of those projects are lab based on campus at NEOUCOM. I found that once you're a medical student research isn't as difficult to find as it was in undergrad. As far as grades as a marker for acceptance for research, yes they'll see your transcript, but for the majority of people it will be all pass with no honors (a very small set of people get honors ~10% of each class you take) so grades aren't really a factor unless there are multiple remediations or otherwise jarring things on your transcript.

Do you need to be doing extracurriculars during the year?

Most people would recommend that you do some kind of extracurricular during the year, but your priority should be your classes. That being said, volunteerism, research, leadership, etc is much more important if you are seeking a competitive specialty (derm, ortho, ophtho, etc.). I just joined a couple interest groups with a leadership role in one, but many people far surpassed that.

How is the interaction between 6yr program students and direct entries? do the direct entries face much competition from the 6yrs?

The interaction between the BS/MD (6 yrs) and direct entry students is probably no different than all other medical schools. I think starting out there is a worry that they're gonna be unbelievable immature, but for the most part that's not true. If you go out on weekends (or weekdays lol) you're gonna be going out with majority BS/MD students since 80% of the class is 6 year students. In terms of competitiveness I think a good majority of the smartest people in our class are BS/MD students, but on the other hand so are the ones who struggle the most. I look at it this way, NEOUCOM ends up getting some competitive people through the 6 year program that would have probably gone to a more competitive school had they gone the traditional route, but they also get the people who were very good high school students that really weren't ready for the rigors of medical education. Regardless, I'd much rather be a direct entry and I have not had a rotation yet where an attending has not asked "are you BS/MD or direct entry?" and the response when I say direct entry is always "good, I think that's better." I'm not sure if it's true, but it certainly feels like attendings automatically assume I'm more competent because I went to a 4 year undergraduate program.

M2 here (direct entry).

Just wanted to add for those who may be looking for housing that A LOT of students in recent classes have also lived in the Sutton Crossings apartment complex, which just opened ~3 years ago.

interview invite today.direct entry. Like the school, students seemed happy when I was there for a tour.

Interview tomorrow, mon 21st. Any last minute advice?!? Anything I should specifically prepared for in the interview?

Hey congrats! I don't remember a whole lot from my interview day except that I was surprised that it was only one 20 minute 2 on 1 interview. Other schools had two 1 hour 1 on 1 interviews so it made NEOUCOM seem very short in comparison. They focused a lot on my volunteer and service activities and I didn't get a single ethical question (others in my group got them though). Interview was very chill and not intimidating at all.

I'm not sure if it's still the same way, but that was my experience. Advice wise, just the general "be yourself" deal, and being interested in primary care never hurts at NEOUCOM (not sure if it'd help, but definitely won't hurt).

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep it in mind and hopefully things will work out well!!!

You normally get an acceptance, wait-list, or denial a few weeks after your interview (depends on when the committee met). If you're already on the wait-list you'll probably get a letter in late April telling you where you rank on the waitlist (high, middle, or low). You won't get accepted off the wait-list until at least mid-June because they take their time in finalizing the BS/MD class before they accept any direct entries. The number of direct entries accepted is directly related to how many of the BS/MD students opt for a 3rd year or don't score the minimum required MCAT score.

Just FYI for everyone, I interviewed on February 8 and just got my decision on Firday (via phone call) and then I got the official letter in the mail today. So, it took a pretty long time for me.

Hmm that's surprising, probably had someone who was already accepted give up their spot. They guarantee 20 direct entries every year and don't accept more than that until the BS/MD list is finalized. Either way congratulations!

congrats!!!! you are officially a part of the NEOUCOM class of 2015 now 🙂

Were you waitlisted or you just got in ???

I'm aware it's ranked in terms of thirds right now as I was told I was at the top of the list I just wasn't sure if they were actually going to let us know what number we were on the list. I really hope to get it in it's my #1 choice

They won't tell you your exact position, but being in the top third is a good sign. However, you should be prepared for the majority of waitlist movement to not happen until mid-June.

Are interview invites still being given out for direct entries? Seems kind of late in the cycle, but I know they traditionally interview later than other schools. Really loved what I've read and what I've heard about the program.

thanks for the insight, kappa!
I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed:xf:

Hey guys, congratulations too everyone who was accepted.

I'm going to be applying to NEOUCOM next cycle. Just some quick questions for people who attend or will be attending NEOUCOM: What's there to do? Where do you guys go out? Kent? Do a lot of your classmates go out together? I'm not a party animal, but I do enjoy a night out now and then.

Thanks.
