My favorite was the question about the dorms. Ummmmm... did you not see them on your interview day?

I'm also curious to know why they finished finish eight minutes early if, as they said, there are still questions left. Ha- the good questions probably got pushed to the end.

Didn't last year's thread indicate some WL movement at the end of March?
 
Hmm I had a question they didn't answer, maybe you can: what is the lecture schedule, do they have lecture/lab everyday from 9a-5pm? Some schools have lecture/small group until 1pm and are done for the day.

The curriculum lady generally answered something about lecture vs. lab in the curriculum, but it would have been nice to hear from a first year that has a first hand experience right?

Edit: Perfect example is this question to Dr. Fritz about how well he felt he was prepared for academic medicine after graduating NYU. How do you think he felt? He still works there, he likes the place so much that he's doing this webinar, and you're asking about his personal, subjective feelings about it. How does that benefit us? I suppose there's some tiny bit of benefit since he didn't say, "Oh man, this place doesn't prepare you at all!"

Edit: And really, people don't know that dual degrees usually take 5 years and there's funding available for international stuff? Am I confused about the degree and ease of availability of the internet in this country?

What is the response of MS1 to new curriculum?
Positively. (of course, what else would she say?)

To what extent do students "get away from" the books?
Really up to personal time management. Many class sponsored activities throughout the year. Opportunities for anything in NY.

How much time do students have to prepare for Step I after clerkships?
Usually 6–8 weeks.

What are results of Step I after clerkships?
Other schools have responded positively. Scores are higher doing it this way. Already higher than national average, so they will only go up.

How many classes/modules at any given time?
2 at a time. POM, and either CORE Foundations or Anatomy/Embryology/Principles in Medicine.

How good is NYU for a career in academic medicine?
Great! Of course…

When does the new Simulation Center open?
Sept 2011. $20 mil total cost. Will be used for nursing students as well.

MD/MBA option?
Interest is present. No timeline set.

Can you apply to dual program after being admitted?
Yes. You can apply during medical school. Most apply while in attendance.

On campus housing guaranteed? Furnished?
Yes, for all students, for your whole duration of study. 80–85% live on campus. Some are furnished, most bring their own stuff, though.

When do students complete the dual degree program?
Usually after 3rd year. All are 5 year programs.

Financial support for International Health Programs?
Yes, of course. Cover approximately 90% of airfare/living expenses.

Online status page for FAFSA?
No. If NYU was listed and you submitted, no worries. Call if you're really worried.

Waitlist movement?
Mid to late May. Please keep them updated of your activites.

very disappointed in the quality of questions they chose to answer. who are these applicants investing all this time and money applying who cannot take 5-10 to browse the NYU website or remember stuff from the interview day?

edit: i was actually surprised that most students decide to bring their own furniture. i mean, that must be a b*tch to do. Even if you buy it there i would imagine.
maybe NYU's furniture just sucks that bad.
 
I agree the questions were kind of weak and maybe kind of a setup. But really we had an entire interview day to ask questions to a students and faculty in person. I think this webinar is no different than our letter of interest, to keep the school in the front of our heads as students waiver back and forth in making a decision. It was a little different last year when they had some new info to reveal, which was the new dorm. But you can't have a surprise every year that is important like that.
 
The new $20 million simulation center looked great! I don't remember seeing their current simulation center when I interviewed....

I posted a long post about this a little while back (taken from email correspondence with a current student). It shouldn't be too hard to find. If you want the short answer, yes it's more like the lectures/small group until 1pm then done for the day except for a couple (few?) afternoons each week for things like practice of medicine and something... I can't even remember what right now.

Going to the IKEA is an adventure!! Coming from NYU (Manhattan in general) you get to take the free ferry straight to the IKEA! Then get a cab to the dorms.. 😀

It's true. I think they could have gone more specific with curriculum stuff though. If nothing else it would have been more interesting. I'm content if they really do answer all the unanswered questions on the website. I had a couple useful (I think) ones.

Yea it did! I can't help but think that students don't get to use the sim centers that much though, but every school makes sure to show it to you. I think they said 30 hrs per year or something right? I guess that's alright. Seems like fun.
 
yea ikea is pretty sweet. i guess if we are gonna live in the same place for four years, its worth decking it out.
so far i've moved every single year in undergrad and im soo sick of it.

Me too. And every year since. Hey, MD/PhD gets you an apartment for 8 years. (I don't actually know that)
 
i wonder if it's weird for people to live of campus/get an apartment near the hospital

i think the figure was 85% of students live on and 15% live off campus

the 26th street apartment has a convenient gym. i didnt actually get to see those dorms tho during my interview.

Hey, if I end up going here I'll be living off campus! Together we can make people think it's not weird (through propaganda).

Speaking of the gym, whether or not off-campus livers can access it was one of my unanswered questions.

yea they said all medical students get access to it.

isnt off-campus living almost the same?? i thought the "dorms" are just apartment buildings NYU bought out

True. Off-campus is just more expensive and allows pets.

So maybe you'll live on campus after all, nerdtastic. 🙁
 
dont worry neuroe, probably wont be living on campus but i'll keep an open mind over revisit weekend!
 
Unlikely, but does anyone have any idea from their interview/webinar or other sources what the deal with merit scholarships are? It sounds like NYU got some money to provide a few? Did they disclose when they might let folks know about them/how much there is to go around etc.?

Obviously, it's a huge huge longshot to get any merit money from such a good school, but man, what a dream! :-D

I don't know if that one is merit based. I think they'll probably have a couple/few merit based things, but as you can see, most of them are need-based now. Anyway, I'm interested in this, too. I was hoping the email I got today with the subject "NYU SoM Financial Aid information" was going to have some numbers in it, but no luck. I just now emailed this question to the ambassador email address, though. So maybe I can post something else tomorrow.

Thanks for the response! I saw those items as well. Plus the financial aid email today made many mentions of merit aid, which piqued my interest. Both in the types of aid section and in the instructions section...makes it seem like it's at least a possibility? It might be that we didn't hear anything because the big donation was publicized only after our interviews? Or maybe I am grasping at straws :laugh:

Anyways, here's to hoping that *someone* gets some money 👍

"The gift will also create the Jan and Marica Vilcek Merit Scholarship Fund and will provide full tuition based primarily on merit, and secondarily on financial ability to pay, for medical school students"

I don't know if that's code for need-based. I was wondering this too. I called in like Feb and they said they're still working out the details of the scholarship...now might be the time to follow up on that

I emailed, and the Vilcek scholarship is the first and only merit scholarship they have. The student I talked to still doesn't know the exact numbers on it, but we'll find out soon!

We should. Is anyone else pretty much set on going to NYU? My only other option is coming off of Columbia's waitlist.

To be honest I'm not sure if I'd take Sinai over NYU at this point. It took me like 25 minutes of walking to find a bar that was open at 3pm the other day (at Sinai). I'm just not on board with that.

Oh yea! Haha, I forgot I'm on Sinai's waitlist, too. That was many moons ago.. I think I agree. Between Bellevue and the neighborhood, NYU seems better? The subway is further away though.

I'm about to have lunch! I'll make a fb group (if I can figure it out).

In terms of hospitals, I think NYU (Bellevue) and Sinai are pretty comparable. I also think Sinai offers certain programs that are unique and really appealing. But in the end, I'm getting an MD and I'll be trained at a top-notch hospital... and I need the neighborhood to back it up.

I think the new policy is that to start a group, you need to have friends to put in it from the beginning. I don't have any of those.

I'm also WL at Sinai and in at NYU. I think Sinai's biggest advantage over NYU is the housing, everything else seems pretty comparable (but I do love that NYU is on the 1.5 year pre-clinical).

As for NYU, I have a coworker who did her residency at Bellevue, and she can't say enough about what an AMAZING hospital it is for medical students to train at. She said her program would get a lot of new residents that were envious of the experiences the NYU med students got to have and that the NYU clinical experience is very hands-on compared to other med schools. At the end of the day, that's what the say is the most important thing about med school, right?

so checked out revisit email today, anyone down for staying the entire weekend, explore the city, hit some bars at night?

also, can we bring friends/family? I was thinking of asking my brother to come down with me. Not just because i want to chill with him in nyc but i also want him to see the school and things like that.

Can't say about the family, but I'm here every weekend, so I'm up for hanging out with anyone that sticks around.
 
I'll def be around, but I'm giving my thesis presentation on the 29th so I'll be at NYU specifically for the 28th events. Totally down for nighttime shenanigans.

yea i didn't realize how ridiculous that notion was until i just told my dad on the phone that they are paying for my flight....then in my head i was like "wtf...are they seriously? no way.."
