Did anyone else get the background check email this morning? Is that sent to everyone after the May 15th deadline?
I was just wondering because I don't have an acceptance yet, only wait lists...

You can call about the background check ...when I got mine they told me what school it was for

I don't think it means anything. I called the Admissions Office and they said you would be notified of your acceptance before they do a background check

Can you call to figure out all the schools who have seen/used it? I got my background request last year sometime but it appeared to be anonymous.

Not sure, sorry. You could call the schools and ask I guess

I figured it out. They can tell you all the schools who have accessed the background check. If you are on multiple waitlists it could be any of those schools accessing the background check. Call to find out.

Do all schools use CERTIPHI, and if so, do you only have to perform the check once?

I don't think so. There is a list of participating schools on AMCAS. The check is only performed once, then all schools who participate in it can look at that check.

Just as a rough measure of potential movement to come- did anyone on here withdraw from NYU on Monday?

i thought everyone with multiple spots is forced to withdraw from all but one by May 15 (which was sunday), is it not mandatory? (/automatic- though how they would do it automatically is obviously an issue)

The deadline was officially Monday, as the 15th fell on a weekend (AMCAS rules). I am asking if anyone accepted at NYU picked somewhere other than NYU.

Have you been keeping up with this thread? I remember at least one, maybe two or three people saying they were withdrawing.

Yes I have! Only one person mentioned it on the deadline (the 16th), and no one has said anything about it the day after or since.

Most people withdrawing will close the book on this school and stick to the other threads. Not worthwhile making these kind of predictions, we just really never know until we see some more movement.

Good call.👍

I called Admissions today. They said that the class is full and that there has been very little WL movement so far. They think that the next movement will probably be in two weeks, if that. Not very promising.... 🙁

This is bad news. Looks like we picked the only cycle this decade where they don't pull people from the waitlist!

....but really, it makes me sad. I would love NYU. Hard.

Still some people on these boards have recently withdrawn. So, maybe they'll be some movement as more withdrawals trickle in.

I don't really understand why the FB group still has so few people like previous years compared with other schools. Do NYU matriculants not use the internet?

What's the internet?

technically the class is always "Full", it just depends on whether people drop out to go to other schools later.

though I'm not trying to falsely raise your hopes, so here is a downer:

last year TONS of people were whining on how "cold" NYU is for sending them a letter/email demanding that they should drop the mutiple acceptances and they should choose one school before the deadline is up- with no "hello" or "we hope you choose us" parts that is standard practice with other schools.

now I don't know if they sent a nicer email this time, but we have not heard any whining like last year

But really, is it related to people not being able to find the group when they search for it? Or is that all cleared up? T1R3KO said something like that...

(3 in a row!)

I may be missing your meaning... Do you mean they're trying harder to be nice and woo people this year, so you think there will be fewer openings? Or the school wasn't as proactive in getting people to narrow their choices this year, thereby letting people lolly gag, resulting in waitlist movement later in the year?

I hope it's the latter. If MDapps means anything (who knows), it looked like half the people listed for this cycle were going to go somewhere else, as in they said so or where accepted to multiple "best" med schools (Harvard. Yale etc.). Interperet that as you wish.

I don't think the email had too much of an effect on the process post-May15th. However, it may have just spurred those who likely would not have chosen NYU to release their acceptances earlier pre-May 15th.

Yea. I guess we just have to wait for a week from Thursday/Friday. I believe that will be 3 wks from the first movement and likely when they may release some more acceptances.

i would expect that they were nicer (because they did give acceptances very early to some people) though I don't know if that niceness extended to changing their email or not as no one had told us if this happened.

I don't think they allowed any "lag" though as it is an AMCAS rule and not theirs.

It seems hard to believe though that one simple email made so many people decide not to come last year- it was probably people who would be dropping out anyway and they simply confirmed one of their annoyances to us

Gotcha

hi all! congrats to those who got accepted and i'm pulling for you guys who are still waiting!

i'm applying this coming year and am trying to figure out which schools i should apply to and was wondering if you guys had any opinions! i'm torn on crossing off NYU off my list b/c my stats are on the lower end 3.4/32 but i am a grad student in ny already and they are doing some interesting things in public health. but anyways, wondering if you guys had any advice as to if i should still consider nyu or any other public health oriented med schools?

thanks in advance and good luck to all of you waiting!

Are you in NYC? If so, do it. Grad student makes you more interesting, and the application costs aren't much. The real cost in applying comes from having to pay for flights all over the place. NYU's secondary isn't difficult either.

Also, US news says NYU's MCAT average is 33, so it's not like you're that far off.

Yea, everyone likes to apply to some reach schools anyway. So, not much to lose.

If it helps, I sadly just withdrew from NYU's waitlist... As much as I love the school and Bellevue, I went with a pretty un-turn-downable in state offer. Good luck all!

yea i'm currently at columbia right now

My friend got a full ride from NYU. I think they started using the recent donation to start giving out merit scholarships.

Long-time reader, first-time poster here. I'm currently on the waitlist and wondering how fast the student housing at NYU fills up. For example, if someone were to get off the waitlist in July, would they likely be able to get a spot in the dorms? It would be great to get insight on this from a current student or anyone else. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure housing is guaranteed. You just might not get the new building. http://redaf.med.nyu.edu/housing/medstu

Probably why no one is getting off waitlists (few but much less than prev cycles) ....

Maaaaybe, but I get the feeling this only provides a couple scholarships.

my heart literally jumped out of my chest !!

That's awesome! Congratulations!

Are you a Michigan undergrad? Also, would you mind posting stats? Thanks a lot!

Accepted today off of the waitlist as well (3:44pm, email). Interviewed back in December. 3.6/32

Congrats to GoBlue12 and Neurosteep!

How long did they give you to decide? I'm trying to figure out if the acceptances given out today can possibly include the ones from May 13th if anyone from that group were forced to decide that soon and actually declined...

I'm also wondering if anyone who interviewed in January has been accepted off the list yet?

Btw, sorry for just randomly popping in like that everyone... been following this thread all year, finally couldn't take it anymore and joined in!

as of now i don't think when you interviewed matters- we are all in the same boat.

@neurosteep & GoBlue12
i can't thank you enough for letting us know and I feel like a real jerk for asking right now, but are you both planning on going? (I assume GoBlue is from the enthusiasm)

thanks!
