This may be a stupid question, but, for the picture, I got a passport pic taken at CVS but they only gave me two copies. Chances are, I'm going to need more than 2 of these tangible pictures (Loyola, Umich interview, wayne, maybe more?) so does the photo need to be glossy, etc. or can I just scan the picture that I've taken and print it out on a 8.5x11? Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere, I didn't do a huge search for it. I guess I can just call them and ask if nobody knows.

You can buy photo paper too at Staples or Office Max, that's what I did.

I just got an email that says

Thank you for your interest in Wayne State University School of Medicine. The Admissions Committee has reviewed your application and selected you to receive a Secondary Application. Attached is the 2010-2011 Secondary Application. Please return Secondary Application materials to us within 4 weeks. We look forward to receiving your materials.

However, I didn't get any attachments... I'm at work right now and can't call them, do you think replying to their email asking for them to attach it would be okay? Or, if it's the same document for everyone, could someone else send it to me?

Thanks for the post. Haven't received the email yet. Would you please tell the word limit on these questions.
Thx.

secondary 🙂 different than last years though. ugh.

Question I

Describe the person or experience that greatly influenced your developing into the person you are today. Be specific in your explanation of the individual’s/experience’s impact on you.

Question II (Choose one of the questions to answer)

A. You have completed medical school and residency training and are ready to begin your clinical practice. What challenges, problematic issues and “downsides” would you anticipate having to consider and resolve as you establish goals for your practice that are congruent with your personal values and self image?
B. It is certain that in the next ten years there will be radical changes in the health care delivery system as we know it today. How do you perceive yourself functioning in this evolving health care environment?

Question III (only reapplicants must answer this question)
What academic, employment, volunteer experiences have you been engaged in since your last application to medical school? How does your current application differ from your previous application?

Question IV (only applicants with an institutional action must answer this question)

Fully describe the circumstances that resulted in the disciplinary institutional action citation noted on your AMCAS application. What “lasting” lessons have you learned from the experience?

Question V (MD/MPH applicants must answer this question)

Please explain your specific interest in Public Health. Include any relevant experiences and/or education.

EDIT: Apologies to anyone who already started working on last years essay questions (I did too haha), I guess I jinxed it:

😀

so....not getting that secondary email....what does that mean?

have they historically sent them out in waves?

I don't understand why people worry about this so much lol 🙂. It is the first day they are sending them out. My impression is that for most schools, when they just start sending the secondaries out it is fairly random (it's so early so it doesn't even really matter if you get it today or tomorrow). For example, I got VCU the day it came out, but didn't get Loyola for several days. My AMCAS was verified 6/22, so I couldn't tell you why VCU gave me their app on day one and Loyola didn't.

If it helps, I am an IS reapplicant and I met with the assistant dean of admissions when I first applied two years ago (which was a super-helpful experience because he basically told me what I had to do to have an excellent shot at getting in).

On an unrelated note, I am excited to fill out this secondary; my dad went here so I think it'd be awesome to go to the same school as him! I'm such a dork haha.

secondary received =)

i really dont think it has to do wit ur GPA or MCAT (considering my MCAT)or anything its probably jez in some arbitrary order

These questions are challenging. Definitely, not your typical secondary questions...

I know right? I think I'm probably going to go with B. just because I couldn't come up with anything really substantial for A. when I was brainstorming so far... gonna think on it for a day or two.

Wish they hadn't changed them from last year, lol.

Just got the secondary. ughhhhhhhhhh essays.

I honestly don't think I am capable of answering question II B. My parents are fox news lovers (to the point that they don't want me to be a doctor anymore), my friends all enjoy CNN, and I lived in a country with universal health care and hated it! They will get such a mixed feeling from me about current health care reform and alittle bit of opposition though (even though I know it is needed so there would be some support too)... that they will probably reject me for not being all gun-hoe about it.

For IIA. I can talk about research, chairmanship, doing good for the society, ect. And be all like -- look how awesome I AM!

For question IIB, which is what I used, I didn't really take sides either way. I basically just said that as physicians we must be adaptable to change, and that regardless of what happens we still have an obligation to our patients to provide the best level of care that we can.

Of course I threw more in there but was kind of the overall angle I took.

Lol I don't think that is a reason to not be able to answer this question though... me and my whole family are Fox News lovers too 😀 and while I think it would be great for all American citizens to have healthcare, I don't think the way the government is going about it is going to work at all.

Okay now that I say that... I totally see how you can't write IIB. And I can't write it either. 😀 haha. Both those questions suck though, IMO. Ugh.

thank you for the feedback. That's a party good angle. I really haven't been paying much attention to the health care reform... which I know is horrible... but regardless, I want to be a doctor and no matter what happens, I figure I will adapt to it. (And also as long as someone helps me pay back my 300,000+ in loans... if my pay is reduced.. because I do want to have some money one day)

Not sure about GPA.. but it does seem to depend on MCAT. I retook it in July (my first score wasn't bad, but definitely was't stellar either), and I got an e-mail that my app is on hold until they get my new MCAT score.

Hi WSU applicants!
So in the future I am hoping to be one of you applying to Wayne State. I'm considering the Wayne State BMS program right now and it's really hard to find any information about the program and how well it works for preparing people for med school admissions and specifically getting into Wayne State!
Did any of you do the BMS program, or know someone that did? I would be really grateful for a PM so I could ask you a few questions if you did!
Thanks!
IgM

I'm in it right now, feel free to PM me w/ any questions!

The way they worded the first question makes me worried that I wrote about the wrong experience. I wrote about an experience that has influenced my development, but not the person/experience that has had the greatest effect. To rewrite, or not to rewrite?

Don't rewrite, experience is fine.

Kind of a stupid question, but since they don't give you an "application" application to send in, do you just put your essays, check, and photo in a mail the whole thing?

Yes. I also put my name and AMCAS ID # in the header of each essay page, just in case.

Mailing mine in tommorow.. Since I didn't get an interview at UMich I'm reallllllly hoping for some love here.:xf:

I already talked about the two most meaningful experiences I have had in my personal statement. Should I talk about a different one (which had less of an impact on my medical aspirations) or go back over something I have previously mentioned?

Most influential person?

I have a question about the secondary application... Does wayne state have to get your reference letters before they send out the secondary application to you? Thanks!

No, but your secondary application won't be considered complete until they get them from AMCAS.

Complete!

Nice! I'm like stalling on turning this one in... I really don't think my Question II essay is good at all but people keep telling me it is so I suppose I should send it in tomorrow lol

speaking about that question 2...

You have completed medical school and residency training and are ready to begin your clinical practice. What challenges, problematic issues and “downsides” would you anticipate having to consider and resolve as you establish goals for your practice that are congruent with your personal values and self image?

What are people writing about? My understanding is to talk about the challenges that can come from transitioning from being a trainee to independent clinician...but the last part of the sentence (establish goals that are congruent with your personal values) is really buggin me out.

Any suggestions?

how much did everyone write for the 2nd question?

hey just making sure

is the re applicant question (question III) for people that have applied to wayne state last year? or for re applicants overall??

For this question:

You have completed medical school and residency training and are ready
to begin your clinical practice. What challenges, problematic issues
and “downsides” would you anticipate having to consider and resolve as
you establish goals for your practice that are congruent with your personal
values and self image?

Can this be simply restated as what are some challenges in medicine and how do you plan on resolving them? Of course specific to whatever type of doctor you wish to become in the future.

Any body get an interview invite? Especially EDP applicant's? EDP interviews are supposed to be in September & I would imagine they would give atleast 15-20 days notice before the interview.

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about an interview yet? I would expect invites to come towards the end of the month . . .

My application was complete on Monday, so I was just wondering . . .

I was complete very very early and have heard nothing.

Does Wayne wait for verification before sending a secondary?

I believe the secondaries are screened, so yes?

Just got a complete email today from Wayne. I hope they start handing out interview invites soon... I would love to know if I've got a decent shot here soon lol

Screened out pre-secondary... OOS 3.4 cGPA, 38 MCAT (12b, 11p, 15v) non-trad. Seeing those essays almost makes me glad about it...

Phew, I thought I was alone on Wayne's reject list! OOS 3.4 cGPA, 34Q, double legacy. SO so glad I didn't pre-write this one. 👍

Daisy and rutinni- your probably too good of applicants seeing as how I did not get screened out and I am also OOS

Nonsense, I'm sure you're stellar 🙂 I get it, I don't align with Wayne's mission of rural/primary care; my whole AMCAS was research, global health and leadership/administration. You're probably a better fit there than I am. Congrats on getting the secondary! :luck:

I think what this school has started doing to minority students is bogus and I dont want to go here any longer. Any minorities dont apply here they probably wont admit you, from what I was told.😡

Yeah... I would like to know too, I go here for a masters program and am in the same building as med students all day and I definitely do not see any lack of diversity if that is what you mean. Could you clarify?

Hey everyone, MS1 here. I'm OOS and in case you're wondering, there are more and more of us every year and there are more now than you might think! I think the OOS student body is growing every year.

I should be studying seeing as we have our first big exam next week (enjoy your freedoms because believe me stupid essays don't compare to gross anatomy) but I thought I'd just tell you guys that last week we got our final reminders for current students to host or tour interviewees. My guess is that I will be seeing you guys and gals all dressed up and walking around campus starting in the next couple weeks.

Good luck! I'll be checking in here every now and then. :luck:

There accepting alot less and putting bogus requirements now. They use to be more focused on creating a diverse student body but not now.

This quote comes directly from the school's mission statement as one of its goals...

"Increase substantially the number of physicians from the under-represented groups; i.e., minorities and women"

Im not stupid. I know this, they just made changes because of recent events.
