2010 Non-Trad Applicants' Progress Thread

Hey guys, a fellow non-trad here. I did mechanical engineering as an undergrad and then I worked for a year in the field until deciding it wasn't for me (I suppose I always knew that though.)

I left my job in July 2008 and started a post-bac program where I took Gen Bio I&II, Orgo I&II, Genetics, and now I'm taking cell bio and biochem.

I took the 7/2 MCAT and was happy with the score (14PS/11VR/10BS/R writing) even though that was on the low side of my BS scores. my post bac gpa was a 3.95 but my BCPM GPA according to AMCAS is a 3.70. They must have used a lot of engineering courses in that calculation, which I don't think is fair.

Anyway, I applied to a ton of schools (AMCAS verified on 8/27 and all secondaries are done now) and I'm just waiting to hear back. I have no research experience which I think will hurt me (seems like every pre-med on here has their own medical journal!) I shadowed a doctor and I have been volunteering at the local hospital since march doing patient surveys. It was crazy, though. I left my job on 7/3/2008 and took the MCAT on 7/2/2009. So in a year I had finished all the pre-reqs and taken the MCAT. It was a really nice feeling, especially since it would have been so much easier to stay at that job 🙂

Just ran across this thread by accident! I'm so busy working full time, being a husband and father of 3, chasing those damn kids in the neighborhood who cut across my lawn 🙂 etc. , that I fail to scan the general threads on the site for things that interest me very often!

Wishing ALL of you best of luck. I know you all appreciate how hard it is to return to school, and I commend all of you for sticking with it! Best of luck!

Hey man. I really like what you had to say in the Wayne State thread. It was an inspiring post.

Your six interviews are one of heck of an accomplishment. Congrats. Good luck this year figuring out where you and your family will be heading for med school.

PS. You really think Rich Rodriguez can pull that program together. SEC/Florida Fan here. Been unimpressed with Big 10 teams.🙂 Good luck with that too--you'll need it in that case.😀

Thanks! As for the Wayne State stuff, even dorks have moments of blindingly inspired speech, I guess. I assure you the moment has passed.

Well...to be completely honest about the wolverines: when I graduated college we were (co)Nat'l Champs. Since then I've grown much older. I now mostly follow Michigan football to avoid gameday traffic jams around town. 🙄 I do agree they have a long road ahead of them. Of course I'd be waaaaayy more into it if they gave me an interview invitation. 😉

I got a 40+, but I have a relatively low undergraduate GPA to make up for 🙂

I've been checking out this thread for a couple days and it's pretty cool. I'm prior Air Force and applying this year. Just got my first interview invite yesterday - CU 🙂 Anybody else trying for Colorado?

Man. I'm buggin. Waiting for responses after interviews is like courting the sherrif's daughter. Formal. Careful than mf'er. And too spaced out.

In my fantasy. Me and the medschool are jetlagged out in the middle of nowhere. We chance meet a blues joint drinking suds and eating catfish. We don't say much. We get loose. Dance. And say to each other let's get the h&ll outta here. And the next morning we're like what the hell just happened.

and a new career was conceived and you pay for the next 18 years or so.

By being so, I know that you will give great advice to someone like myself just embarking on their journey.

Having a non-science background, what would be the best order to take my prereqs? I took bio I and chem I in undergrad. I need bio II, chem II, Physics I/II, Orgo I/II, and BioChem-including labs except Biochem. I would really appreciate you all sharing how you did it and if you could do it again what would you change.

You'll get lots of different opinions. Most importantly, do what works for your schedule and abilities. You really need to set a timeframe too, as in when do you want to take the MCAT and when do you want to apply?

Take Chem II this summer, since orgo and biochem depend on that.

Plan to lighten your load when you take the MCAT, especially since you'll have to review a lot of Bio I and some Chem I.

I agree. Also, dont overlook physics, need to get it in before MCAT as well. I was stupid and ended up with three lab courses including orgo 2, physics 2, and physiology while trying to study for MCAT and graduating. Dont do that. 🙂
 
so i am ready to say that i have finally come to the end of my application season... i started two years ago when i moved to Virginia to establish residency with my wife who took a job teaching at Hollins University... began working on my essays over a year ago, took the mcat almost a year ago today, and had my primary application sent out in June 2009... racked up several secondaries and began interviewing in the fall... i saw my fair share of rejections, waitlists, silent treatments, and admissions offers... I am happy to say that last month I accepted a seat with a huge scholarship attached to my top choice medical school!!!!! i am a student of the charter class at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine... it feels amazing to be able to say that!!!!

Accepted at Northwest University for Undergrad right on the sophomore/junior line. Struggling through first math based classes in 10 years looks like I'll get a B+ or better, but really fretting. Precalculus, and Biostats one after the other first thing in the morning.

My brains readjusting, have 17 credits, and 2 of them are huge history and lit classes.

I am still swimming though.

I am trying to get a grip and really sink my brain into next fall when the 17 credit all science load starts!
