I grew up right near Hofstra. The closest option is the Marriott, right next to Nassau Coliseum. I don't know if they have a special price negotiated with Hofstra, but it is literally right down the street (Hempstead Turnpike).

I just looked it up and it looks like there is a discount if you schedule one by going through the hofstra website! I got my first interview invite. 🙂
hey everyone,
congrats on the interview invites everyone. i just noticed there was a ton of activity that got posted today. when i interviewed, i stayed at the marriott next to the school. it was a really nice hotel and that's where most of the interviewees stayed. if i remember correctly, the school provides transportation the morning of your interview. geographically, it's probably easiest to fly into jfk or laguardia, but if you wanna save some money, it's better to fly into jfk, take the LIRR to hempstead train station, then cab it to the hotel (~5 mins). hempstead train station is a little bit ghetto, so be prepared, or travel with a buddy if you arrive there after dark.
the school itself is awesome. it used to be the new york jets training facility, but they converted it to the school of medicine. the curriculum is really innovative. if you get a chance before your interview, check out the PEARLS stuff on the hofstra website. i absolutely love the way i'm learning. it's only ~6 weeks in, and i couldn't imagine learning medicine any other way. that being said, it's a very different curriculum, and it's not for everyone. if you like learning lecture-style, this school probably isn't a fit for you. you really need to be the type of person who enjoys actively participating in class and learning from your peers to get the most out of this education. fortunately for me, that's how i learn best. also worth mentioning is that the health system is a total beast. it's one of the largest in the US, and there is seemingly infinite resources to take advantage of. if you like individualized attention, you can't beat hofstra. i feel like the the faculty:student ratio is at least 10:1, maybe more. literally every prof knows my name. that's something you can't get anywhere else.
anyway, i gotta run, but PM me if you have any questions. i'll try to get back to ya in a couple days. good luck with applications everyone. this process is incredibly dehumanizing and intense. just be yourself in your essays and interviews, and it will work out for the best.

Anyone interviewing on 10/21 ?? I was trying to figure out how to get to Hofstra from JFk the night before. I am not too familiar with the area!! Long Island folks??
For real. FINALLYfinally get an invite?? 👍

Thanks. That hotel is not listed on hofstra website as having a special rate but I love the location. So close.I grew up right near Hofstra. It said in the local hotels link on hofstra website thatI just looked it up and it looks like there is a discount if you schedule one by going through the hofstra website! I got my first interview invite. 🙂
Note: To receive the special "Hofstra" rate, one must call the hotel's direct reservation line - special rates are not available online or via their toll-free 1-800 numbers.
Did you call the hotel? I am going to call them tmr to check the rate.

This website gives you the exact link to that Marriott with special rates... if not when I click on the link the special code is "HFS". It looks like the rate is about $169 for a variety of days, but obviously it ranges.
Interview invite, OOS!

is 10/21 the very first date to interview?
Congrats to those of you with II! Do you mind posting stats?
I was complete around 8/9 and I haven't heard anything 🙁 I'm disappointed, I really want to go here.

Congrats to all of you that got interviews! Maybe I'll happen to run into someone here when I go interview there. I wonder how many interviews they're going to give out this year; I interviewed last year and they gave out about 800 interviews for a class of 40 (I hope that's not the case again this year).
is 10/21 the very first date to interview?
That was the most convenient for me. The earliest date I saw tonight was October 10th, but that filled up and right now the earliest available interview is Oct 27th Also.. the calendar has available dates until 2/2/201.
Looks like you can cancel/reschedule with only a week notice. interesting.
Complete: 8/9/11 II: 9/6/11 I: 10/21/11
What the? Why would they interview so many? Judging by the way the interview dates are filling up to quickly I guess this is the case again this year. I am going to call and ask.Congrats to all of you that got interviews! Maybe I'll happen to run into someone here when I go interview there. Edit: Where did you get the info? I got the newest MSAR and there is no stats for Hofstra.

I have to agree with longislandbro. AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica, and then the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) from Jamaica to Hempstead. That'll get you to about a mile from campus.
I got an invite as well! Hofstra's 20 minutes from my house, and I was born at a North Shore-LIJ hospital (and more recently shadowed a doctor there), so this is very exciting for me!

Please describe the activities or programs in which you have participated in since college graduation.
If you are currently enrolled as a student, please indicate what you will be doing from the time you complete this application to the start of medical school.
If your education was interrupted for any reason, please indicate the reasons, the duration of the interruption, and how you spent your time.
Have you ever been subject to any investigations, actions, or convictions (either institution or legal)? If yes, please explain.
If there is anything your application does not include, but that you would like to bring to our attention, please share that.
Best of luck with your application!
I'd like to point out, after double-checking, that the second question on my secondary definitely says: If you are currently not enrolled as a student, please indicate what you will be doing from the time you complete this application to the start of medical school.
The "not" makes a pretty big difference for the response. It also makes the response seem almost identical to that of the first question. 😵

Last years thread said that is how many were interviewed.
The class beginning in Fall 2012 will be 60 students. (Info taken from Hofstra's website)

I just called the office. 800 students are interviewed every year. That's pretty horrible. We all have less than 10% chance. I don't know why they decide to waste people time and money like this.
I would say a range of 100-150 people get accepted and 60 will matriculate here.
It's not a waste of money if it is a great fit for you and you fall in love the with school.

Oh I forgot there are people who turn the school down (not aware that they existI would say a range of 100-150 people get accepted and 60 will matriculate here.

). Anyway, other schools have about 20-25% matriculation. I would prefer it that way but I am going to the interview regardless. For a class size of 60 students, schools will typically accept about twice that amount, so you are looking at 120 accepted. However, Hofstra, being a newer school, will likely accept more than double the class size. I don't think it is a reach whatsoever to suggest that they will accept around 200 students (after waitlist acceptances, of course). That puts everyone at a 25% chance, which is pretty good if you ask me. Even if they only accept 160 students, you are still looking at a 1 in 5 shot. Be excited!
I got the interview invite yesterday as well. 32M, 3.55cGPA, 3.42sGPA, OOS. Secondary complete 7/6. Interviewing on 10/20.
I'm flying into JFK. Should I rent a car? Take public transportation? Hitchhike? I plan on spending a day or two in NYC after my interview, btw, so PM if you'll be there too & want to chill.

anyone have any interview dates scheduled on the 9/20?
I would REALLY appreciate it because I already booked my flights for other interviews during that week.

same here, kinda, I'm interview at Albert einstein the next week in sept, hate making 2 trips, but it's a good investment. I think I'm gonna schedule my hofstra and albany in Nov, and do those in one swoop
Can anyone please switch dates with me? I scheduled my interview on 10/20, but I actually live in the UK and I will be in the US from 10/5 until 10/14 only. I desperately need to interview within that time frame.
Please help me out!!! thanks.
