is laguardia the easier airport to arrive at?

LGA is smaller than JFK - however, JFK has more flights on time. JFK also has the airtran which can take you to Jamiaca and then you can go to Penn station or wherever you need to go.

I would vote JFK, but both are fine.

If you're not pressed for time and are unfamiliar with NYC's public transit, I would recommend (as in most other cities) using SuperShuttle. They may take longer to get you into Manhattan (depending on how close to rush hour your flight arrives), but it is a door-to-door service for about $20-25.

If you are arriving mid day and traffic is light, a cab from LGA to NYU med is 15-20 minutes and pretty reasonable. I have paid under $20 before. (I have also paid $35+ during rush hour.)

For the bus from LGA, take the M60 bus to 125th and 2nd Avenue. Then take the M15 down to 34th and 2nd. Walk over one block to NYU. Takes about 1h 10m door to door and costs $2.25

The subway is kinda far from the university and I have had good experiences with the bus.

Get the Special Bus Service M15, though. Same price and much faster/nicer than the regular M15. You can get your pass at these little kiosks next to the bus stop.

I will never take super shuttle again. Missed a flight due to their scheduling delay. Had to fight for six months to get compensation which they guarantee if you miss your flight. Worst service, don't risk it for such an important event.

Marked Complete Today after submitting on 9/15! 🙂
So sad I took so long finishing this secondary because it is one of my top choices and I see they have given a lot of interviews out within my stat range.
Still hopeful though! come on NYU Love!!!😍

Does anyone know the best way to get from JFK to the amtrak (and what the closest amtrak station is called?) I'd like to buy my tickets beforehand. And are amtrak tickets refundable or transferable (i.e. if my plane is late)

I'm an OOSer, have zero sense of direction, and am pretty sure I'm going to get very lost in New York haha

The A train goes from JFK directly to Penn Station 34th Street, which is where Amtrak trains arrive/depart. If you miss your train, I think you can go to the ticket booth and buy a new ticket, and they'll subtract your original ticket price from the new price.

Good luck finding your way! NYC is pretty easy to navigate, compared to most cities. 😉

Thanks! Do I email admissions about it, or is there a website I can go to?

From the online portal:

If you plan on staying overnight for your interview and are interested in staying with a current student you can email the student ambassadors at [email protected]. They will try their best to provide everyone with housing, but unfortunately due to schedules they can't guarantee it. When you email please include the date that you will need housing and if possible what time you plan on arriving, as well as your gender, hometown, and undergrad institution. You'll get an email back in a few days with information about your student host.

Thanks! I missed that part - I was too excited about the invite

Amtrak tickets are awesome. Don't print the ticket until you are at the station before you're ready to go since it's fully refundable until you print it. Yes, you can even get a refund after the train leaves. If you print it, then it becomes a voucher that you can exchange for value towards another ticket. You can also refund after printing it but it's more of a hassle.

THANK YOU (and also to ywlke)!!! Two quick questions though:
1) Do you have to buy tickets in advance for The A train?

2) If you're early to amtrak (and bought tickets online beforehand), can you get on an earlier train?

The subway? No, just buy it when you're there.

Nope. But if you think you're going to be early, just buy tickets for the trains that you think you might take and then cancel the others afterwards. As a courtesy to other passengers though, I'd limit that to maybe 2 or 3 trains total.

Hi guys,

for those of you who had the afternoon interviews when did it end for you?
my flight (LGA) leaves at 5:30pm so should i be worried?

anyone hear back from them about hosting yet?

Hey, I have an interview on Sept 24th ... and I'm flying to Laguardia airport. Whats the best way to get to NYU? (I'm actually staying with my sister who's at NYU undergrad, but she has no idea how to get to where she is from Laguardia)

Thanks!

My student was very quick to respond, I contacted them the day after I got the invite.

Hmmm, that's strange. It's been a week since I sent the e-mail but I haven't gotten a response yet. Maybe I'll send another e-mail tomorrow in case the first one didn't go through 🙁

it's been a week since I sent mine too. Im guessing they're just getting backed up right now.

Interview Invite! Complete 9/23, Invite 10/10. So excited to see NY again!

anyone else interviewing tomorrow? I'm really nervous but also extremely excited to check out NYU!

I'm interviewing next week, but good luck! Weather has been beautiful in NY these past few days👍

Really?? That's good to hear, I was there last month for three days and it rained constantly  I hope the weather will stay nice until my interview in three weeks.

Any MD/PhD applicants or alumni that could share their interview experiences?

Hi All,

Does anybody know how flexible NYU is to changing your interview date? On the website it says that once you confirm a date online, you can't change it on the website. Can anybody comment on how difficult it is to change the date? Or if you can at all? I am still trying to figure out the best date to go since I may or may not be starting a job, and that will definitely impact which dates I'm free to interview. I'm afraid if I choose a date that I'll be stuck with it even if I find out my work won't let me off. Thanks!

EDIT: Never mind guys. Sigh. Sorry for spamming this thread! I finally took the plunge and confirmed date, then immediately saw the "Rescheduling options" blurb part of the confirmation page. Carry on.

Any people who interviewed today like to share their experiences!?

Any updates on the student hosting front? I emailed them several days ago and I am interviewing next week. I imagine they are booked and busy, but I was just wondering.

same, except my interview is the week after. keep us posted if they ever get back to you.

Hey, does anybody know how dining works for med students that are living in NYU Housing? I can't find anything on the website. I looked at the housing floorplans and they all seem ok except none of them have kitchens. I take this as a hint that the med students are eating dorm food? Terrible.

Clearly you are not familiar with the life of a medical student. Medical Students DO NOT EAT

All of them have kitchens (both Greenberg & Vilcek Hall). Each suite has its own.
I don't know what you mean by "dorm food."
There's also a cafeteria next door to where we have classes which is super convenient.
Getting food isn't a problem here. (I remember it was at Columbia (1 kitchen in all of Bard, I think) & Hopkins (1 semi-functional? kitchen in Reed?).

Reed is closing at the end of this year though, so on-campus housing at Hopkins will be in an all new building next year.

Yah, but I think they might still be keeping Reed around and letting kids pick? And the rent is like, what, doubling? for the new dorm.

I'm pretty sure they said Reed would be closing down so they can demolish it and put something else there. And no, I don't think the rent is doubling, although it is going up. That said, on-campus is not the only place to live.

Thanks for the info. I wonder why the floorplans at http://redaf.med.nyu.edu/housing/medstu don't show apartments with kitchens. Only the Vilcek hall PDF states that there are kitchenettes, which is why I was really confused. It'd be nice to make home-cooked food every now and then. Kitchens are the best place of any home.

I really apologize if this is somewhere else on the thread already, but what days of the week does NYU interview?

Thanks and sorry again if this was posted before!

If I remember from scheduling, Mon Tues Thurs and Fri - I could be wrong though.

Hey Everyone! I interviewed at NYU last week (such an amazing school) but completely forgot to ask about when we might be hearing back on admissions decisions. Could anyone please elaborate? Thank you!
