I am trying to figure out housing/transportation for Stony Brook, I am sure people have had the same questions as me but can anyone suggest a place or thread to look for some of this info?
1. Cheap areas within 30 min drive of Stony Brook, main suggestions I have received were Port Jeff or Lake Ronkonkoma for their proximity to rail, but I wanted to see what other students think. Closer to campus is better but it seems to get very pricey.
2. Rail or car for getting to school: I saw that commuter parking permits are free but I am wondering how practical and available car parking spaces are. Rail is pricey but maybe more practical.
3. Is bicycling to school practical, ie are their safe bike paths and weather conducive to biking for much of the year?
Any insight on this would be appreciated, thanks!

Have you requested to join the facebook group yet? There are still people on there like you looking for housing or people who have places looking for housemates. The housing I've messaged people about so far are around Port Jefferson and most people seem to plan on having their cars around.

1. 30 minute drive is way too big of a radius. you should focus in on 15 minute drive. port jeff is a good option. lake ronkonkoma is really about as far as you should go. things in between include east setauket, centerreach, lake grove.
2. bring a car. use it to get to school. rail is extremely impractical. there is a parking lot in the health sciences center which you can buy access to (22 bucks a month)
3. a few people do it. it's not practical year-round but can be practical most of the year.
in general you should reach out to your fellow incoming students and try to get in with a group of roommates. you can also email someone in the administration about the housing packet they gave out during preorientation. since its a bit late you might be stuck with a more expensive studio apartment or you might be able to find a an apartment that's attached to a house that'll be cheaper (usually a basement or an attachment)
Thanks for the advice, I requested to join the FB group but am still awaiting response. I am bringing a car but I had hear that rail is helpful when going to NYC, my wife has an audition for the Metropolitan Opera so if that works out we might not be too poor.

It can be. but if you want to take the train your best bet is to drive to ronkonkoma and then take the train. you don't have to live near it.
