Hey guys - as for financial aid applications, as far as I can tell we just submit FAFSA and the Downstate App for Institutional Aid. Do we need to send signed copies of our & our parents' 2011 tax returns? I would call the office but they're closed and I want to send them asap.

No, that's only if you're selected for verification.

Cool, thanks! Also, the deadline for filing for residency is later than the financial aid deadline, right?

Filing for residency for tuition purposes is due 4-6 weeks before the start of school. I'm no expert on this form, since I haven't turned one in yet, so please double check with admissions since they're in charge of your file! 🙂

any idea when to expect a downstate class of 2016 facebook group? MPH classes start in June, and it would be nice to have a place by then (with roommate(s))

One has been created. You'll need to search FB for Downstate College of Medicine Class of 2016.

A temporary one has been set up. I don't think the official one has been set up yet.

search for Downstate College of Medicine Class of 2016

Just beware that it is a mix of 2015 and 2016 students in there. If you have questions you can ask in there too, the response rate is pretty good

In our year, the official one made by the school was barely used. Just use the one that is currently on fb. An admin will approve your request shortly.

Hey there! I waited from mid Sep to early December, 2.5 months of a wait for me. I'd suggest calling and asking about "whether a decision has been made on your file"..explicitly state you're not asking for WHAT the decision is, but WHETHER one has been made. I emphasize that because they can't tell you over the phone, but they will tell you if one was made or not. Tell them it's been 10 weeks and you want to know..I know I would.

I will be interviewing on March 19th and wanted to inquire about student hosting. I emailed the Office of Minority Affairs to see if they could arrange something, but have yet to receive a response. Also, wanted to reach out to URM students at SUNY for insight on the school. Thanks.

PS- On a slightly different note, the email from admissions states that I am schedule for 2 interviews. Anyone else have this?

I stayed with a student host. I e-mailed Ms. Levine (the lady who did the interview scheduling) and she told me to email her the date I needed a host and contact info and she forwarded that information to the volunteer student hosts. Then the student host emailed me back and we talked and set it up.

so maybe you should shoot her an email.

Does anyone know if Downstate takes update letters? In there application guide I think it explicitly states not to send anything beyond what they ask for. just wanted to make sure that I was understanding it right.

Thanks

they'll put your update letters in your file. doesn't mean it will be read or considered though.

Hi folks. Just got an II for early April. Anybody know if an interview that late in the cycle is more or less a wait list fight? Or is there still a chance for an outright acceptance?

It is a bit late, but according to many users, there's typically a lot of waitlist movement at Downstate. So even if you do fight and get on the waitlist, you have a good shot at an acceptance.

Good luck! I really wish I get more II's as well!

Hey, if you don't mind me asking, when did you complete your secondary? I've been complete since July and have heard nothing. I'm getting desperate and losing hope 🙁

I was complete in October and sent an update letter in December

Anywhere from 6-8 weeks usually, up to 10-12 if necessary. Mine was around 10 weeks.

When I was leaving my interview day (2/16) the person from the office said not to expect to hear anything back for at least 8 weeks, so this sounds like the plan they are going by. I wish it were sooner though. After being on hold for fall grades, all this waiting is agonizing.

To any current students or anyone who knows the answer:
So the housing form is due march 1, but do I have to send the $500 deposit with it?
What happens if I want to send the housing form in later? because I havent had a chance to see the hall yet, so not sure I want on-campus housing.

Thanks in advance

You'll just get later pick if you turn in your application later. The application will not be processed without the form, so send it in when you're sure you want to live there.

The dorms are much more expensive (few hundred monthly) compared to immediate surrounding neighborhood, but you're paying for convenience and security. That's my two cents about dorming, which is what I'm doing next year.

Thanks. I think I will do the shadow-a-student day first, then decide.

Hey, thank you so much for the reply, I called them and all they said was "no decision has been made" when I told them how long it had been, more than 12 weeks, they said there is no timeline for the decision... I'm starting to feel like they forgot about me because of the extremely long waiting

idk how much longer I am going to have wait, I submitted a letter of intent as well about 3 weeks ago.

thanks again

My gut told me that my interviewer just didn't have a chance to attend the meeting to talk about my file for a while..maybe the same for you. Evaluate how busy you perceive your interviewer to be--it could be the reason. My interviewer was taking phone calls and emails DURING my interview. 🙂

Hi all,

The priority deadline for submitting the institutional financial aid app is right around now (I forgot when, but I remember they told me when I called). I submitted mine a while ago via email, but did not receive a response...Did those of you who submitted already get a response? (I also checked the admissions check-list, but there is nothing on there in regards to financial aid).

Thanks.

Just call them and check that they received everything.

Anybody receive acceptance for the MPH program, with their MD application still pending? I received US Postal mail notification of acceptance to MPH program for June 2012 entering class, but no word from MD program re: interview...would love to hear if there have been any other people in this similar situation...

in the same boat...

Someone earlier asked a question about interviewing in April... just wanted to say that I know a current student who interviewed in April, was wait-listed a few weeks later and then accepted a week or so after that. Definitely worth going if you really want to go to this school I would say, things can happen pretty quickly!

are IIs still going out? 😕

I know of people who interview throughout the month of March through April...I don't know if they go later than that, but it'll vary from year to year, based on seats filled and whatnot. good luck!

The admissions office told me they generally send you the II about a month before your interview date. That being the case, my guess is there are still some invites left as the interviews go into April.

Thanks for the feedback! I checked the admission checklist page and saw it still says "initial review." Does that mean anything or is that just the status for everyone without an interview? Complete in back in October.

I am post interview for quite some time and my checklist still says "initial review." I don't think the checklist gets updated after you are complete. I may be wrong though.

Anyone who interviewed in late January or early February hear back yet?

Hey guys - has anyone driven to their interview and stayed overnight?? Were there decent places to park? I'm considering busing or flying down but if parking isn't difficult I wouldn't mind driving. Any advice would be great 🙂

It's a very busy area given that there are multiple hospitals within a few blocks. If you can help it I would recommend not bringing a car. I don't know what the story is with keeping it in a lot overnight though.

If you've ever tried to park in the city you know how it is, but it's better than Manhattan. You'll find parking but you might have to park two or three blocks away.

If you look at the map of the school area provided on their website, there is a parking garage 1-2 blocks away from the basic science building where you could leave your car. I'm not sure what their rates would be for leaving it overnight but you could always call them and find out.

yes there is a parking place near by and students with cars use it to park their cars. it's only a small block away from school. not sure what rates are...

My friend interviewed in mid Jan and got placed on the alternate list... anyone have any idea how good of a chance that is for actually getting accepted?

There will most likely be some movement on the waitlist in the upcoming months (let's hope). Do you know how your friend found out of his/her status? Was it by snail mail?

Yes, snail mail about 10 days ago. Do a lot of the people on the alternate list get in, or only a few?
