Just got invited back for a second interview! Is that normal?

I think its not unusual for people to be called in for a second interview. Who was your interviewer btw?

I'll PM you. I thought the interview went terrible, she picked apart my application but didn't ask anything about what I learned from my experiences, why UMDNJ, why medicine..it was a pretty bad interview but because of how nervous I was, I attributed it all to just giving a poor interview. Hopefully the second goes better 🙂

Same exact experience and same exact outcome

Please PM me details

My first interview went pretty bad as well. I got invited for a second interview and it went much better! I just got accepted last night so don't worry it's not a bad thing to have 2 interviews! And Dean Heinrich actually said that both of my interviewers had great things to say so even if it seems like it went terribly it may have been better than you thought. Good luck!

When were your 1st / 2nd interviews ?

Who were your interviewers (1st & 2nd)

ok, I might get my butt kicked for this but I think the breakfast thing is kind of rude. It sounds like sour grapes, but it's like saying.......... if we haven't accepted you by now, you just aren't that important. Its only November....... we are suppose to have until march. I have never heard of any other school that does this so early. Everyone has until mid December to send in their secondary and all applicants should get due consideration..........Congratulations to all of you that have gotten in and I know it is an arduous, angst ridden process, and I mean no disrespect, but I don't like the feeling of dismissal that other applicants get as a result of this breakfast.
i can only speculate....

they want to make sure people with early acceptances (& probably multiple acceptances) end up going to NJMS and so they want to get them early !! (just like how department stores have big sale few days before black friday)

yea i do think that people who are wait listed or not accepted yet are kinda "left out"

I am going to be out of the country soon until next July, so I am incredibly thankful for this one opportunity I will get to see some of my classmates before orientation starts. I hope you can put yourself in my shoes and understand my viewpoint. I am only speculating, but I imagine Neuroengineer is right - here, as well as at every other med school that does "second looks" and "luncheons", they hope to give accepted students the opportunity to ask any questions and learn about the school to make an informed decision on where they want to go. Having spoken to current NJMS students, there are definitely luncheons and events in the spring. I also understand your sentiments about this being the middle of the app cycle and quite early. But I hope you can understand what this means to me.

i absolutely understand..........and i am happy for you.....it is friday night and i am just venting. I am not a nj resident but have friends that are. i mean no disrespect.............

No worries 🙂 this is a really stressful process - I sat out a couple cycles because my stats weren't great; I know how it feels to wait and watch things happen to the people around you. good luck to you and your friends :luck:

I can imagine the importance of this in your particular ("special") case.. but otherwise I M H O it sends out a wrong message (that they have sent out enough acceptances to hold a major event) given their deadline for secondary is still few months away

I don't know about you guys but NJMS was my shortest interview day by far. While it was nice not to get overwhelmed with the usual presentations of how broke we are all going to be after graduating, I felt I didn't get as good of a look or feel for the school as I did at other places. I think the brunch is just an opportunity for them to showcase the school because their interview days are pretty unstructured. I know that I got back to the admissions office after the tour had left so I've never even gotten a tour of the school...

By the way, I didn't see this posted anywhere but the attire is business casual. Just lettin' you guys know.

Hi guys, I'm an MSII here, and I just wanted to let you guys know that there are two 'accepted student luncheons' with the second one being in the spring, so there's no need to feel left out if you haven't gotten in yet. Keep those fingers crossed! The idea is to keep people interested in NJMS throughout the application cycle so they don't totally forget about how awesome we are!

@Ipayfofriends, I'm sorry to hear that you did not get a tour! I'm not sure how that happened, because usually all interviewees get tours on their interview day...Anyway, I know it's a longshot, but if you're interested in seeing the school I'd be more than happy to give you the official tour (I'm a tour guide). PM me if you're interested.

To everyone else - feel free to ask any questions you may have and I'll try to answer them. Good luck to you all!

mdschlmyb: Thanks for your offer. A quick question to you if you can please help with appropriate info.

Generally what is process of decision making after a second interview is done for an applicant ? Does it go through the same process as the first interview ? Is second inrterview done by some one who is in the adcom ? How many weeks generally it takes for a decison after second interview ?

Got a call from Dr. Heinrich around 4pm! Interviewed on 10/13. I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday morning.

@325jerseyboy

As far as my understanding of getting called in for a second interview (and I am definitely not an expert in that area), this is NOT a death notice. This doesn't mean that you totally screwed up on your first time around. Sometimes, the first interviewer may simply forget to ask questions that get at some of the important information that the committee wants, in order to consider all aspects of a candidate's application. To resolve this, the school may call an applicant back for a second interview to fill in some more information. Once that happens, I would be willing to bet that the application is submitted to the committee just the same as anyone else's. I really do not think there is a separate pile of "two-time interview applicant" files sitting around. I know that Dr. Hill often does second interviews, and I do believe he is on the committee, but even if not, his evaluation would certainly be given a lot of weight. In terms of turnaround time, I would think it would be no different than any other interviewee, meaning anywhere between 2-6 weeks...I hope that helps somewhat. At the very least you should keep in mind that they wouldn't have called you in for a second interview if they weren't still interested - they would have just rejected you or put you on the waitlist. So keep the hope!

Good luck!

so i had an interview on Oct. 13 and I still haven't heard back yet. I've noticed a few people after my interview date have been accepted and was wondering what this means. Do they give hold/rejection via email or snail mail?

i dont see anyone discussing how the "breakfast thing" for accepted students go...

Hi,

A friend of mine was recently put on the alternate list; she interviewed 11/2 and was notified today of this news. Do things bode well? Many people are having their applications reviewed 6-7 weeks after their interview, is it strange that she had hers reviewed and decided just 4 weeks after?

They tell us 4-6 weeks so I think she had a fair amount of time. I'm honestly not sure if they have a priority waitlist or not.

It is not unusual. What were her stats?

Overall, her stats are 3.7ish/32R with great research and other extra's. I find it odd because I myself interviewed 10/5 and haven't heard anything back yet.

For those accepted students: when you handed your acceptance deposit form did you receive a conformation that you reserved a seat?

I got the email . I'm trying resist the urge to call and ask why I got waitlisted. Maybe because I didn't show enough interest? Talk me out of it!!!

interviewed 11/2-- i'd cut off a finger to get an acceptance here

Yes I did. I got a letter about 2 weeks after I mailed in my form with the check. I had also emailed Dr. Heinrich a week after mailing to make sure they received it, and he got back to me the same day. 🙂 Took about 5 days (including weekend) before it was processed.

Do you guys think it's overkill to send a second thank you note after a second interview? I want to show that i'm still extremely interested in attending NJMS but I don't want to become annoying.

I would advise against it. I am sure you showed your eagerness to them while you were there and the fact that you went twice for an interview shows your persistence in an of itself. No need for one if you ask me. I know how much this means to you. I am in the same boat. Hang in there!! 🙂

Thank you 😳

Just got an invite for a second interview. Kinda bummed, thought the first went really well.

This seems to be really common for NJMS apparently. You may have done great but the interviewer may not have asked all the information needed for them to make a decision. (that's what my second interviewer told me yesterday)

Thats great.. looking forward 🙂

hope it is not at an odd hour !!

Shouldn't be, but no worries. If you miss the phone call, Dr. Heinrich will leave a voice message. Hope you get accepted. 🙂

I really hope so too...

the 2nd interview delayed the process by few weeks !!
