How come the nitrogen further away from the carbonyl gets attached to the other carbonyl compound instead of the nitrogen closest to its carbonyl?
 
Know these:

1. Aldehyde or Ketone + primary amine = imine

2. Aldehyde or Ketone + secondary amine = enamine

Here you have an aldehyde + a primary amine resulting in an imine.

But couldn't the amine group next to the carbonyl become an imine?

Or wait is it because its an amide instead of an amine?

I don't have the 2011 destroyer so I don't know what the molecule looks like but if there are multiple amines, the one with the more available lone pair will be the one that reacts.
