Getting nervous now, I have five interview invites (just went on my third interview today), but now my last interview invite was on the 9/10. Haven't heard a peep from other schools.... just making me anxious that I had one interview invite after another it seemed like for a couple of weeks then.... silence.... no wonder this process makes people crazy! 🙂

I told my interviewers that my weakness was being a chronic multitasker, lol. One of them burst out laughing, but not in a bad way. We were just having a very friendly convo. I explained how it had helped me get to where I am today 😛

I, too, am on pins and needles. 5 interviews is awesome! I've still had only the 1. An invite in late August, interview in early September, and total silence since. It's driving me a bit crazy actually. I am so hoping for good news on Oct. 15th. I think a wait list might make me cry.

Being mature and settled I have only applied to one school, and its a bit of a toughy. Is this crazy? I feel good about my qualifications but having all my eggs in one basket makes me extremely nervous. Adding to that is the fact that my app has only been complete for one week. Is this prohibitively late? I had originally planned on applying next year but I just couldn't wait once the gears started turning. Any advice?

Welcome MedSchool Beard! All the best on your one application! It's by no means an auto-rejection at this point, but you may not hear anything for a while. Don't panic, I'm sure everyone can attest it takes forever to get a response in some cases.

Since you weren't planning on applying this year, your one probably rejection won't hurt your feelings too much - and if you do get in, its an unexpected admission would be a nice little bonus.

Since you have all of your ducks in a row. You can start next year with a 6/1 application submission to dozens of schools and make sure that you get in.

Appreciate the reply. Unfortunately, the rejection would hurt my feelings much. The MCAT went better than expected so optimism has entered the picture. Do you think its probable because of my lateness, or just the basic statistics involved?

I don't know that you've hurt your chances or not. Your numbers are good (great MCAT, as I'm sure you know), but there is a sizable element of randomness in this process. I think you have about as much a chance of your top school liking you than a less favorable choice giving you an early acceptance. I would say don't get too attached to one program, but if you are bound to the area/school and don't make it in this year, I would try to find out why, fix the problem, then apply early decision next year.

Although you are a bit late in the game, I don't think it's prohibitively late just yet. Just keep improving your application, and worst case scenario you'll be an even more competitive reapplicant applying early next year.

I'm doing something similar, applying to only two schools and fully aware that I might have to reapply. So I don't think it's crazy, but consider the source... 😛

I have nine invites, but that's all they are at this point. Invites. Of course I'm happy to have them, but until I have one acceptance, I'll be just slightly freaking out. 🙂

I don't know your school, but my state school has a process where your good stats get you an early interview, and the early interviewees have a probability of being accepted. Worse stats gets you a late interview, and the late interviewees all get put on hold and judged as individuals, and many of the adcomms want to use more subjective measurements like perceived commitment to medicine. So your late application may cancel out your stellar MCAT.

The point I'm making is, you weren't planning on applying this year, but decided that your stellar MCAT gives you a chance - which it does (depending on your school's system). But you may get rejected with nothing wrong with your app except that it's late in the process.

But, it was worth it to apply, anyway. You lost nothing except a couple hundred dollars and may have gained an entire year.

I can't really comment on the significance of community college, maybe someone else here can help with that.

As to your other questions...I personally would not recommend taking additional college coursework to prepare for the MCAT, especially if your current GPA is a 4.0. The science content covered on the MCAT is specific and consistent, so you are probably better off with a good prep book or online course, or even a physical class if you are willing to shell out the dough. I would start this within a year of your anticipated test date to be sure the material stays relevant. Kaplan has an excellent set of options for this. In any case, it should be much more cost effective than college courses, and will cater directly to what you will need to know for the test. I finished my undergrad coursework 10 years ago and was told by an admissions official that this was not an issue.

Call the admissions offices of a few schools and see what they say about your coursework coming from a community college. I was told 'no' by schools in Chicago. More rigor, more better. But if schools will take what you've done, that is great. It is worth calling and checking.

I never got the big rush. 1 invite and then crickets, but since it's one of my top choice schools I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Starting Oct. 15th I will either start obsessing about getting another interview, or I'll be thrilled to have an acceptance.

I think that I read that M4's who rank more than 10 places have like a 1 or 2% chance of not matching. Those are probably people who only ranked ROAD programs.

It is my birthday this weekend. Yay for me being born.....BOOOOOOOO for me hitting 30.


My parents called me with news that they were sending the traditional package for me. But, they also had specific instructions about how to open the box and that I was to go to the local FedEx hub to pick it up. I went to pick it up and as they brought the box out I could see it was covered in fragile stickers. All I could think was, "Precious Moments figurines?!" I carefully opened the box, as per the explicit instructions. As the last flap opened there was a white coat, stethoscope, and one of those light pen thingys to check pupil function with (I don't even know what to call that!) staring me in the face!

That was seriously the most surreal moment of my life. The only thing I can think to do is wear the stuff for Halloween. And I swear, I'm not walking around my house wearing the getup....Ok, maybe I'm wearing it a little....... Ok, maybe A LOT!

I had a dream last night that getting into Med School was like the first day at Hogwort's.

Tons of people were there, all dressed in our fancy robes, in order to be sorted into schools. The line was out the door which lead up to a stool where applicants would sit awaiting the magical sorting hat. In front of me, a young Patrick Dempsey look-alike walked up to the stool sat down while Dumbledore placed the hat on his head. The hat said "Hmm.....3.9 GPA.......38 MCAT.....co-author on a published paper.......marathon runner for cancer.....FEINBERG SCHOOL OF MEDICINE!!!!"

Everybody clapped and he sauntered of to join his Northwestern cohorts. This went on for a while, gorgeous and overly qualified applicants paraded up there, each with a pronouncement of an excellent school. After waiting in line for hours, I finally made my way up to the stool. As the sorting hat was placed on my head, it seemed startled "Oh.....ummmm......tough one.....I think.....maybe......Yes! I've got it! It's......"

Then I woke up.

The waiting has not only taken over my conscious thought, but has apparently also invaded my subconscious as well. As long as I'm not Hufflepuff, I'll be happy.

The night before my interview at FIU I dreamed that I showed up and all the people interviewing with me that day were disabled. The interview organizer smiled at me and said "This is the day we interview everyone in wheelchairs to get our quota."

I've never been happier to be in a crowd of ABs than that next morning. 😉

I've been reading these forums for the past 2 weeks. This is my very 1st post so bare with me. I'm 29 and finishing my bachelors in nursing this upcoming year. My dream ( and when I say dream, I mean it's all I think about all day) is to be a Doctor. I'm an immigrant (former refugee) in the US, so things have developed much slower for me. I decided to get my bachelors in nursing as a back up plan, given my circumstances of not having any money or financial support from anyone. I've been so concerned trying to come up with ideas to support myself, and be able to attend medical school when the moment comes, I've lost sleep over it. After reading everywhere looking for options, I've decided that as soon as I get my citizenship I will pursue the HSPS option with the Armed Forces. Please do not acuse me of wanting to take advantage of the military. Regardless of what you may believe, serving this country is also one of my dreams. I've been able to pursue real goals that one where only impossible dreams amongst caos.

While I have a partner who encourages me to be whatever I want to be, and is willing to adapt as long as I can realize my dreams, I don't have much of a network of friends pursuing anything similar.

My status for UVM says "a decision had been made and you will be contacted shortly" (interviewed 9/14) so now it's just waiting till Oct 15th which is scary!!

I mean I want to know the decision but really only if it is good news. UVM is one of my top two choices so I really want to get in!

Welcome! Follow your bliss! Go for it! The military is a wonderful option if you are called to that type of service , no pun intended. Make friends on the way. They will help when no when else quite gets it.

I just want to say to both guys waiting on FIU, that I am keeping my fingers crossed for both of you. I got so happy when they opened the school of Medicine. FIU is one of the schools I would love to apply for. South Florida desperately needed an option besides pricey UM and Nova.

For me only time will tell though. Even when I am so excited to try my hardest and get into FIU, I have to be honest and tell you I'm thinking about moving out of the State. Florida is way too far to the right for someone like me (specially towards gay and lesbians). Hopefully the field can even out a little and I don't have to kiss my sunny city goodbye.: 🙁

I feel ya. I'm from northern Florida, so I know all about the right wing crazies of the state. That's one of the reasons Miami is such a great choice for me. Almost anything is better than the city I'm in. 😉

I have been thinking about this waiting thing and have decided that the AMCAS and AACOMAS application fees should include a cryogenic sleep pod of some kind which awakens us only when there is news. 🙂 I had one interview last week at my state school but the next three aren't until next month...somewhere in between I think I will end up going nuts.
