2011 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!! Was this your first (of many, surely!) acceptance?
Thanks! You're kind. 🙂
It was my first and I have decided to withdraw my remaining interviews since the three I have attended already are my top schools anyway. I am still waiting impatiently for OHSU to send down any decree. 😉 When do you interview?

That's a good strategy, since you absolutely don't want to be caught getting an offer from a school you would rather not go to. 😎

Next Tuesday. Eek! 😀

Fingers crossed for you! :xf::xf::luck::luck:

I'm canceling mostly because I don't want to buy unneeded airfare. I might need that money to fly to AZ for house shopping!

I current work at Penn. For a while my lab was in the building just west of the building where interviews and admissions stuff happens. We recently moved to the building just south of it. I frequently find myself walking from our new lab to the old space to get something out of the freezer there, or to use the old office space, and end up walking by a big tour group of smug interviewees. And it's always annoyed me, because I was waiting to hear back from Penn myself.

This morning I finally got an interview invitation! Exciting stuff. I'd love to jump on the next available date, which is next week, but I'll need to wait until next Friday's paycheck before I'll be able to afford the rest of my interviewing outfit. So I guess I'm taking a slightly later date. At least I'll look good.

Is it just me or does a medical school acceptance raise the symptoms of senioritis to the eleventh power?

Seriously, I have NEVER been this close to lazy in my entire life.

I just thought about this post for a minute.

Right now I am taking eighteen credits (at about a 3.8 GPA), working full time, and traveling to all sorts of interviews and such. AND, I feel like I'm being lazy.

Being Type A is AWESOME.

Oh, my...yeah, Dude, pick it up! Sheesh! 😉

Oh, poo. I got the big "hold" from OHSU. My future is looking much more tan than before. :-D

Yeah, I think it's short for "hold your breath, we'll let ya know".
Yeah, pretty much. Ultimately I think I'll just be happy if I have news by May 15th, instead of dragging out all summer on a waitlist.
How did yours go??
Well, I'll put it to you this way. As I was driving there this morning, the classical station happened to play the Peer Gynt suite (a favorite piece of mine). Just imagine "Hall of the Mountain King" on full blast as I'm charging up the hill. RAWR! Yeah, that basically set the tone for my day. 😀

True. We discussed how a $1000 deposit was a relatively small price to pay to hold my spot in AZ while praying we don't have to sell our house and lose out with mortgage bubble depreciation.

Rock on! Sounds like you couldn't have had a better set up! Congrats!!

Oh yeah, I forgot about those gianormous DO deposits! 😱

Also hoping to not have to sell my house in a lukewarm market. 😎

Agreed. I'm actually done with all my classes, however I feel this way at work. The environment is becoming increasingly stressful and my coworkers are all super unhappy. It makes me 1) happy I'm getting out and 2) sad I'm not getting out sooner 😛

Got in late Monday night after driving home from an amazing day at Mayo, too late to bother checking email. But there it was the next morning, waiting for me. Email acceptance to Chicago Medical School, Rosalind Franklin. Incredible!

Whaddya mean, just an interview? That's great! 👍

Nice! Non trades rock interviews!

.... And thx for the good love from everyone on my 1st acceptance. UIC came thru today, so that's 2. Very sweet.

Happy Thanksgiving all! We have a lot to be grateful for.

Uhm.. don't they only take 30% of the interviewees?
That's still very dicey

I hear you bro! But interview is the first step towards acceptance.

Fall 2009 Admissions Statistics

  • Total admissions data 4359 applied, 639 interviewed, 269 were accepted, 84 enrolled
  • In-state admissions data 73 applied, 31 interviewed, 9 were accepted, 5 enrolled
  • Out-of-state admissions data 4286 applied, 608 interviewed, 260 were accepted, 79 enrolled
  • Women's admissions data 2006 applied, 318 interviewed, 136 were accepted, 47 enrolled
  • Minority admissions data 1363 applied, 186 interviewed, 76 were accepted, 15 enrolled
  • International admissions data 383 applied, 8 enrolled

42% in '09 btw

Interviews are the first step. Congrats! I just got a Columbia interview invite today, and I'm pumped.

You're not looking at the statistics correctly, and your chances may be much better than you think if you interview well. Post-interview, the applicants are not all equal; it's not like the adcom throws all the interviewees' names in a hat and picks out several at random! Some people are rejected post-interview and have 0% chance of being accepted. Some people are rock stars and never mind their chances of being accepted--the school will be hard core recruiting them to come. Many people are somewhere in between. So your odds of being accepted aren't necessarily correlated with the number of people who interview, because your odds of being accepted are heavily influenced by how badly the school wants (or doesn't want) you. Even if the school interviewed 1 million people, there'd still be a select group who they'd be begging to come there. 🙂

I'm with you. It's so bad that I'm diving into SDN full-bore. (But there are still subforums I dare not visit.) Hi, everyone. 🙂

Oh hey, I didn't realize there was a non-trad thread too 😀

I'm a 28 year old former Staff Sergeant in the USMC, does that qualify me to hang out here? I applied to Loma Linda this cycle and had an interview in November. I think they start acceptances after the 15th, so I've had my fingers crossed :xf:!

Congrats to everyone who's had good news so far!

Hey guys 🙂 So I have my acceptance now, paid my deposit, ready to go...But since I'm a non-trad and a post-bacc with a degree already, am I expected to go to school Spring semester before med school starts? Already have all the pre-reqs and a degree, so I wouldn't see why the school would care? I want to get a full-time job so I can save up as much as possible for med school. Anyone have experience with this?

What are you doing right now? The only real "commitment" you would have school-wise is any classes you indicated as "future" on your AMCAS transcript. If you don't plan on following through with those, you should remove them. (I need to do that as well since I said I was going to take anatomy in the spring but I don't strictly need it and I would prefer to hang onto that $ for now.) Other than that, you're free as a bird.

Will removing those classes potentially affect the acceptance? How do you remove them, I thought you can't edit AMCAS after submission? My school hasn't mentioned sending in transcripts from this semester yet. Will those go to AMCAS or the school itself?

You're not being unreasonable in wanting to work instead of completing coursework, but you need to jump through hoops and communicate well.

Contact your med school and ask for permission to not complete the classes you said you'd complete. If you read your acceptance letter you'll see it's a conditional acceptance pending completion of "outstanding items" or such like.

I recommend making sure you talk to a decision maker (a dean or director) on the phone or in person, and attempt to get permission in writing, next week. The academic world is about to shut down until January.

Best of luck to you.

Congrats!!! Going somewhere warm for a honeymoon? I've been spending the past week fantasizing about Bali... 🙂

Thanks!!

No honey moon just yet. We didn't schedule one because we weren't sure what would be up with interviews and such. We will have quite the adventure soon though, what with moving for medical school and such. I really hope we can do a little get away for a few weeks before we all start in the fall.

Keep up the good work every one!!

Happy New Year's Non-Trads!!! 2010 has been good to us, hopefully 2011 will be even better. 🙂

I checked in on the regular undergrad MD forums and for the holiday they are talking house parties and hittin' up clubs. I assume like most non-trads, I am at home, curled up with the dog, my loved one, and a quality beer. I hope y'all are having as good of a time as I!

All my best!!!

As always. 4/10 for life. (Had to be said. 😎)
