Got sick of sitting on this forum all day, played some N64. Definitely recommend it.

I'm pullin for you Fivo!

Thanks man. Congrats again on your acceptance. I know you're probably on cloud 9000 right now. Good stuff 👍

I don't understand this. You and my friend both have two IIs at top 10 schools but nowhere else. How's that work?

No idea (wo)man. I'm hoping there's a method to their madness! 😳

39 MD schools, CA resident, re-applicant, non-URM. AMCAS verified August 15th. Complete at most schools early September

3.4 cgpa, 3.56 sgpa, 33 MCAT (balanced)

7 rejections.
0 II.

Now I'm hitting the panic button. Next steps?

Which schools did you apply to?

You are black, bro.

2nd wait-list. Goddammit. I thought I interviewed so well too.

That's 0 for 2.

Is this typical? Does it mean I'm doing something wrong?

I have 3 more upcoming interviews, so maybe I can still fix things.

silence from 30 schools. been complete there for at least 1.5-2+ months in most of them. it's starting to make me twitch. does anyone know if this is the norm?

I hope not. I have one waitlist, one hold. I think it's hard to know what typical is considering this is SDN, and I think as a general statement, people who frequent this site are more competitive. (Doesn't the average applicant have a <30 MCAT? I rarely see that here, so where is the other half of the pool?)

I do think a lot of waitlists have significant movement, but I have a family and would really love to get in somewhere before next summer so we can know what's going on with schools and jobs.

Don't lose hope yet.

As for me, my rejection this morning means I've got more rejections than ii. Ugh. And to think I was so excited when I saw med school mail in my inbox....

4 II = 1 post-interview rejection, 2 wait-lists, waiting to hear back from the last one, no other interviews on the horizon.
Hope is fading fast.

I would rather spend my days studying for the MCAT/STEP 1 than spend them waiting in limbo.

If I wasn't panicking before (lies lies lies), I certainly would be today. URochester booted me too...making this my 3rd rejection of the cycle with no real good news.

I've also gotten to be a connoisseur of rejection letters (BU is the best, Cooper Rowan is the worst)...this is not a good trend.

Please, someone, just like me enough to interview me! I promise I'm very cool in person!!

Same! Rochester makes my 3rd rejection with no II here!

Goddammit, just received my first rejection of the cycle at Rochester. I feel like I'm a bit too depressed about this. Is it normal to feel this down after a rejection? 🙁

It gets easier with practice! 😛

yep!

Edit: Oh my god, after looking around it's like Rochester decided to pull a Michael Corleone today, "Today I take care of all family business."

Funny! Wisconsin writes a very nice rejection letter too. Top of the list, for sure. 😛

If u just got your secondaries out this month they probably haven't gotten to your file yet. Its a long waiting game, pull up a chair.

It's like going to the ER first time as a kid. You get called in and you think it's the doctor but no, it's just the triage nurse. And then you wait again. Then it's the X-ray tech. Then you wait again. Then you go to Burger King cuz it's been 7 hours and you're hungry. Then you keep waiting.

Has anybody read "Bleak House" by Charles Dickens? I feel like Ms. Flite going to the courthouse everyday.

Hahaha... yep.

I felt like I was the only one who read this book! Great analogy--I do feel like Ms. Flite, complete with the increasing neuroticism and craziness that comes with two months of no news except holds and rejections.

How strict are schools with Letters of Recommendations. Do some schools list you as incomplete if your letters don't match exactly? Do they look at your letters when marking you complete or incomplete?

Haha, Rochester seems like they gave everyone the boot today.

 I loved BU's rejection letter, too. I mean, as much as one can love such as thing. It was very nice. I think Rochester might be a close second. It's true, Cooper Rowan is down there, and Wayne State is my least favorite right now. I will probably now hate Wayne State forever because I thought they were jerks about it, haha.

I think a copy pasta is in order so that we can all gauge just how terrible they are. 😀

Ok guys, I think I'm going a little insane. Complete at every school in mid sept (except at RFU cuz they took forever) and received nothin but bad news so far. Rejection from BU and vandy. To ease my pain, I downloaded the nds emulator the other day and started playing pokemon black, which is pretty pathetic. It's now 3 am, cant sleep at all, so I came here.

Maybe I should do something that will make be feel more positive haha

I'm restless and want to meddle and there's not really any meddling to be done. Seems like LOIs before interviews are generally regarded as annoying. What about status updates? If schools allow them, are you all updating or is that also annoying?

Let's just hope we don't become Ricky C, he diaee, he diaee mann....

for those who received rejections yesterday pre-interview, when were you complete?

I would only send a status update pre-interview for something major. Like a new job in the healthcare field, or a ton of shadowing. Just try to stay away from the whole "I'm still volunteering here and still doing this and that." Just my humble opinion of course.

so generally not a good idea to write an loi at all before an interview? Haven't heard from a bunch of schools and wondered if it would be a good idea to jog their memory or to write something convincing?
Bad idea?

There is a wide variety of opinions on this subject throughout these forums, and honestly, I'm not 100% sure how I feel about LOI's. I have also been complete at many schools for a long time with only silence to show for it (hence my lurking in this thread) but have decide to wait a bit longer before considering sending an LOI (probably late Nov/early Dec). There are some success stories with them, but also many people who feel that they do nothing at all.

Rowan's masterpiece:

Dear [name],

Thank you for your interest in our program. As you know, the medical school applications process is highly competitive, and each medical school receives an extremely large number of applications. You will not be granted an interview with our Admissions Committee. We understand your disappointment, and we wish to inform you that our decisions are not made on any individual datum. Each full AMCAS and secondary application is screened for many indicators of success, readiness, and fit with our mission. We do not turn any applicant away lightly, as we understand the level of preparation you have put into this stage of your education.
We appreciate your inquiries into our program, and wish you the best in your future career.

With best wishes,

--I'm not sure which is worse, their apparent lack of caring or their terrible attempt at the use of the word "datum." 👎

Compare that to BU:

Dear Mr/Ms. [Last Name],
The Committee on Admissions of Boston University School of Medicine has completed its review of your application. It is with great regret that I inform you that we will be unable to offer an interview this year. This is a disappointment, as much for those who are responsible for the decision as it may be for you, the candidate who is turned away.

Most of the candidates we are considering this year are qualified to attend medical school and are likely to make important contributions to our profession and to society. Sadly, with more than 100 applicants for every seat in the class, we are forced to deny many exceptional people.

We acknowledge and respect your accomplishments and recognize that our inability to offer you an opportunity to complete the admissions process is a loss for Boston University. Please accept our best wishes for all your future endeavors.
Sincerely,

--note how much better this is! I felt awful about being rejected but this letter made me feel like they still thought I deserved to go somewhere and be a physician. 👍

How poorly written denials make one feel:

23 MD schools complete from end of Aug to end of Sept. 3.7 cGPA, 3.6 sGPA, 4 years research, 1 pub+abstracts, 36MCAT all above 10, much leadership, much shadowing, some volunteering though probably my weakest point. 1II at low end state school, 2 rejections, all else silent... wondering if I have a lor nuke creeping but all my letter writers are saying to just relax and wait...maybe committee letter nonsense? idk...panic thread is a bit therapeutic at this point

We have very similar stats, experiences (and you have more leadership no doubt)! You'll get some love from NY soon enough. I'm just sitting on silences from all of my california schools.
