2012-2013 Panic Thread

Just a little inspiration guys...

Got my first II today with "meh" stats (3.43GPA, 31P). I am still panicking as I haven't yet heard from my state school so now my eggs are all in one basket. Though invites are still going out at least.

late applicant as well (complete early-mid October)

Congrats! What school?

So for those of us complete early August with only one interview, some holds and rejections, I'm wondering is our only option to pray that the one interview gets an acceptance. Id love To go to the school I was invited to, I'm just afraid that with so many applicants the odds are stacked against me and November seems pretty late to be getting an invite. anyone have insight as to chances of getting an additional invite this late?

I thought it was getting to be too late, then got an II today.... I know of other people who have gotten them late in the season and still got accepted. It's hard not to be panicky though. I am really hoping for 1 or 2 more this season.

havent heard back since my last II in about a month....so far 5 rejections 2 II (one is foreign) and still waiting to hear back from 15 MD schools about interviews. >3.35, >34MCAT.

not panicking yet but come on, november has to be better than october doesn't it??? good luck all.

post-interview rejection at state school today puts me at 4 rejections, no other interviews yet 🙁 getting worried...

Oh hello empty Friday inbox, we meet again -_-

I may be hearing back from the school my first interview was at today.... super panicked now!!!

Just wondering if someone here had some input so I don't have to start a new thread. My top choice (for many, many reasons) has been completely silent for two months. If I stated in a LOI that I would withdraw all applications from all other schools and matriculate immediately if I was accepted, would this be an overkill? I would do this in a heartbeat but do not want to seem too overbearing.

I'm in a similar spot, and I wasn't planning on using the approach you mentioned.

I am just going to send a simple letter with information updating them on new shadowing, volunteering, research, and work experiences.

I know nothing of the inner workings of adcoms, but that seems kind of desperate, and I can't think of too many situations where desperation is viewed positively.

Many congrats to punkedoutriffs! 😀

I am now your patron, Panicers. 😎

😱 That's great! Hopefully all of us can one day look back at this thread and laugh.

Now, let's bow down to our new patron god.

I'm definitely not trying to come off as desperate, the last thing I want to do is leave this impression. I just love the school and I would pick this school over any other that I applied. It would just be nice to convey this to the committee without going over the top. I am sure they hear that they are a top choice by many people, but we all know that this can be half-hearted as a ruse to get an II or acceptance. This school is genuinely my top school and I want the adcom to know this.

I know that feel. Didn't check my inbox for ~24 hours. Had 19 new messages, all of them pretty much pointless. 🙄

I feel that way about a school too but only plan to communicate it via LOI if I get waitlisted. I guess I would say, wait until you are confident that you aren't going to get an interview before sending something that could adversely affect your chances. If you are going to send it, rather than phrasing it as "I'd drop everything else to be with you" (likely equally as unattractive in the med school process as it is in dating), I'd highlight the areas of overlap between your mission and their program and strongly emphasize FIT rather than your willingness to forsake all others. If that makes sense? It just seems like it may do more harm than good at this stage of the game, unless you're confident that you aren't going to get so much as an II, in which case you really have nothing to lose.

Thanks! That was extremely helpful. I am around the median for their stats and I just started research/a full-time hospital job at their school, so I will definitely start with that. I feel these updates should help. I suppose I originally asked this for later in the cycle if I had yet to receive an invite.

Checking in for therapeutic effect.

6 Rejections, 2 Holds, 1 Interview. Applied to 30+ schools. Complete at most schools end of August-ish.

and another week passes with no word from any...

Put on hold (rejected) from Penn State. I really wanted to go thereeeeeee. 🙁🙁🙁

You all need far stricter spam filters...

The bad thing is, all of my 19 messages were from school officials about hurricane stuff. I got like 10 different e-mails about the same thing.

Been lurking for a while and decided to join in.

16 secondaries complete in July/August
0 II, 1 rejection
36 mcat, 3.6 cgpa, 3.7 sgpa

I have my own .edu addresses all on filters too. I only get emails from med schools, faculty, and students. 🙂

community service/volunteering: ~250 hours
shadowing: ~300 hours, 5 different specialties
ugrad research: one year endocrinology research, a couple presentations but 0 publications
employment: one summer job and one part-time job during my senior year
hobbies: soccer, running, powerlifting and a bunch of intramural sports during college

I am currently in a gap-year and volunteering as a research assistant at my local children's hospital, but unfortunately none of my recent research/shadowing is included in my amcas application and not all of the schools that I applied to are receptive of updates.

How are your EC's? Goodluck!

If I don't get an interview invite by Thanksgiving, I'm going to shave my head.

submitted secondaries ~9/20. Still no II's. I'm dying over here!!

I think those of use with September completions need to start gracefully accepting that the 1-2 interview invites we may get in the coming months will probably be our only ones. It's freakin' November and people complete in July/August are still getting the bulk of IIs! Applications are up something like 10% compared to last year, and with the ever-increasing popularity of SDN, submitting early is probably a prerequisite at this point to get fair consideration.

Most of the schools I applied to seem to be turning the corner from August to September applicants right now. The process will probably start to speed up, though, due to a combination of somewhat weaker applicants applying later (on average, who also don't apply as broadly), and just less applications being sent in around, say, October.

As far as I'm concerned, if I'm not rejected yet, I still have a good shot. 👍

Great attitude! I'm going to think like that and hope my prayers are answered 🙂

I told myself I'd avoid SDN for the sake of my nerves, but I lost power because of Sandy and came to check SDN because it's the only site that will load on the hospital wi-fi.

I think I'm getting an anxiety attack just from reading some of these posts :scared:
