Uh oh.

Just got an unofficial rejection post-interview.

I had my interview 2 weeks ago and got a reply to my thank you note:

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. Best of luck in your academic endeavors

This was pretty standard for someone who was rejected - ie she doesnt expect to cross paths again. I'm clearly the lousiest interviewer known to man when my best interview resulted in a rejection.

Another reason I'm sure it was a refusal was because she waited 2 weeks to respond to it.... Enough time for me to have gone to committee.

...or maybe she just forgot you because she's interviewed lots of other people by now. Plus even if she gave you a glowing assessment, the decision is (usually) made by a committee of people who never met you. I don't think you can draw any conclusions from a blunt response like this.

I agree. If you haven't received the actual rejection I think you're way overreacting. I didn't get a response to any of my thank you note emails except for one... And that one was just as blunt and seemingly cold as this one. I got accepted a month later. So, don't read that much into it.

She told me to send her the pics from my volunteerism trip and I did, along with the thank you. This was her reply.

I don't think she'd forgotten me. This is clearly an unofficial rejection.

I still think you're reading too much into it, though I understand how disheartening this process can be. All you can really do at this point is not think about it, so try to not think about it 🙂

I agree, she may be required to give a polite ambiguous response in order to avoid being unfair.

I actually went back and looked at the e-mail I got back from my interviewer:

"Obviouslyteal,

Thank you for your sustained interest in xx school. I wish you the best.

-Name of interviewer

So... that's not that different than the response you got. Don't freak out so much. Just let it happen and deal with the decision once you actually get it.

I wouldn't call it ambiguous. It reads like every single rejection letter I've ever gotten. "We are pleased with your interest in X SOM, and wish you best of luck in your academic endeavors!"

Umm... yours didn't have "best of luck in your academic endeavors,"

Now THAT is the kicker. Best of luck in your academic endeavours.... sounds so distant and elsewhere. This woman is the director of the graduate program I'm applying to concurrently (Concurrent MD/Graduate program - she's the head of the graduate program). This is a woman who would probably be working very closely with me if I were accepted.

If I had been accepted she would have said "best of luck!" or something like that.

This certainly fits under "panic thread". It's going to be okay, physiologist. What are they trying to do to us? 🙄
 
I've seen acceptances after responses stating they were the most arrogant thing in cowboy boots/heels (pick your fantasy), and waitlistings after messages begging me to work in their lab once I arrived.

Your interviewer's an advocate for you, but there's still a ton of people who can spin the judgement one way or the other.
 
I look at it this way; if someone gets a response that says "You were amazing...can't wait to have you at this school....you're definitely getting in" and then later doesn't get in, they're more likely to start flooding the adcom with complaints. If they give generic, unbiased responses, they have 0 liability, commitment, etc.

I want to enjoy my last semester of undergrad rather than spend it agonizing over my future.

Yet here I am, having to wait....and wait....and wait.... and argh there are few things I hate more than uncertainty.

I think we all know what you mean. Unfortunately very little in life is certain. The sooner you come to terms with the significant implications of that statement the better.

You're an int'l right? I think that you have to take this less personally. The number of int'ls accepted each year is very small. Many, many excellent students are rejected every year. The same schools that have rejected you may have gladly accepted you if you were a domestic applicant.

JMO...but it seems to me that for an int'l to get accepted s/he needs an exceptional hook for a SOM to decide to accept.

I also wonder how many accepted int'ls end up not being able to attend because they can't swing the often 'up front" money requirement - even if it's only one year's worth. Some SOMs are asking for all 4 years of funding up front. I think it was in this forum that I read that an int'l requested a one year delay of matriculation because he couldn't come up with the money. He's probably not the only one who has had that issue.

Yeah, we're all right there with you. Just remember that you can still enjoy your senior year...take a breather every now and then.

This. All the schools that hinted that I was going to be accepted all ended up in a waitlist. I've grown tired of hearing the "I'm sure you'll get in" line during interviews.

That said, Ive been waitlisted to every single school I've interviewed at, with 1 post interview rejection. There is just one school pending post-interview but its the only one that didn't give me a misleading impression. Strangely, I hope that means an acceptance this time. Its looking like my last chance and I am panicking out of my mind here...

My conclusion: spend your waiting time preparing your application for next cycle. It brings down some of the panic. We're all in the same boat, so you've come to the right place.
 
This is probably the only time in my life that I will ever say this, but...weekends are awful! I keep neurotically checking my email, hoping for news, and then remembering that nothing will come for at least two days 🙁

Well actually, I thought about it, and it was less than 2 weeks after my interview, and they don't ever mail decisions before 3 weeks post-interview, and even that's on the early side.

Also, the adcom meets on Mondays and my interview was on a Monday so there was only one Monday that passed between my interview and the email. Knowing how adcoms work the chances of them having gone over my file during that meeting are pretty slim...no? Also that woman didn't even interview me - she just gave the people who applied to the joint MD/grad program an orientation. As far as I know she does not sit on the adcom.

Also, since it's so late in the cycle I'd imagine they'd be pretty backed up by now. I just can't seem to get a positive interview verdict. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I even went to a coach who gave me 2 mock interviews....(he's a med student who is trained by a company to do these interviews) between my first rejection and this interview. I also don't know whether it was because I'm a terrible interviewee or because of my GPA.

On the other hand, that email SCREAMED rejection. The fact that she sent it to me a week and a half after I sent it, the fact that the woman would be working extensively with me should I be accepted (so the "good luck with your future academic endeavors" seems super dismissive, under the assumption that these endeavors will be elsewhere and not involve her.

I dunno....what do you think?

I think... you gotta wait. So, decide if you are going to apply again. If so, think about how to make this app better. Always prepare for the worst and hope for the best. BTW, if you keep applyng / working you will get in.

I think you're dwelling on this way too much. Rejection or not, your obsessive thinking about its meaning isn't going to change the results. If you think something went wrong, figure out what it is, and find ways to fix it, be it in your app or your interviewing skills. Don't dry yourself nuts over one sentence in an email.

First time poster in this thread, but mostly cause I wasn't panicking. I've been through a crickets cycle (i.e. nothing but crickets) so this one with 5 II's is still a step up.

The admissions office called my boyfriend's number today (I live in Korea so I had to give out a US number), tried to call them back, but I guess they were gone for the day by the time I woke and got the message. Now I have go through a day of work waiting until the office opens again ( around 9 or 10 pm my time). I can't imagine it's anything but positive news, but the waiting doesn't make it any easier, lol.
 
I got one the morning after Christmas, which caught me off guard. Of course these last couple posts will now only fuel next years neurotic types.
