Thanks guys! I was thinking I might just be competing for a spot on the waitlist this late in the game!

Omg I interviewed on the 13th...must leave work and go wait by mailbox...please don't email me please don't email me please don't email me please don't email me

Aw man, I got placed on hold for spring consideration. Ugh I was really hoping to get in here. Is this a rejection or more like a waitlist?

Like a waitlist. Rejections are straight up rejections! They'll re-review you come springtime so if you're really interested I would consider sending in an LOI? Not sure exactly what date they start reviewing but I'm assuming around April/early May before the May 15th shuffle.

Yeah that's what I thought. I'll definitely start writing letters of interest soon. I was so surprised to like this school and I thought my interviewer was really impressed with me, so I'm bummed.

Has anyone received an email explicitly saying they have been "waitlisted" as opposed to "on hold for spring consideration"?

Interview 12/5 and nothing yet..

It will be interesting to see how the mess with the hospitals will affect the school- brooklyn hospitals in general have been in pretty bad shape for a while now. Hoping for the best though- I love Downstate!

anyone received a certiphi email prior to an acceptance letter?

Was just reading about this this morning. Quite scary, especially considering the fact that a few of their buildings are already in a bit of disrepair, and I thought they had plans for some renovations/newness coming up. I wonder if that'll happen now what with this fiscal crisis.

Concerning also because this is currently my first choice out of the acceptances I've received thus far. Wondering how this will impact medical education, if at all? Downstate has made a lot of great changes in its curriculum lately and I'd hate to think that these financial problems will stop the school from continuing to progress. Wonder what the students are hearing about this.

The new president of Downstate has assured us the school is in good shape financially, it's just the hospital that needs changes. Inpatient services are destined to be drastically reduced, but MS3/4 rotations shouldn't be affected since Kings County Hospital provides similar services across the street.

Interview Invite today!!! Scheduled for 2/25.
I had pretty much given up on getting any more invites and was biding my time for the rejections to roll in.

Can anyone comment on how much of the class might be filled already? I hope I'm not interviewing for a spot on the wait list!

Stats: 36MCAT, 3.45 cGPA
Instate and I feel like I interview fairly well but thats just my opinion ha. Not URM (pretty much the polar opposite)
Do I have a shot!? I'm thrilled I have a shot at a state school 😀 and I'd love to go here!!

Thanks a lot for the input. I've been reading as much as I can find on this issue online, but I'm still a bit unclear as to what will change. Will the inpatient services at LICH (or Victory Memorial) be reduced? Which hospital exactly will undergo the reduction? An attractive aspect of Downstate to me is the clinical exposure gained by the students. I had assumed this type of exposure was experienced at Kings County Hospital - is KCH going to face a cut in services?

Sorry to ask so many questions, I'm just (obviously) unclear on how DS is going to face this financial issue.

Thanks!!

Congrats! Can you share when you were complete?

Has anyone complete on the later side (cough-October-cough) received an ii?

+1. I was thinking of contacting DS to see if they had any more information on this topic

Complete sometime in late August, early September.

I submitted my application inOctober and had a really quick turnaround... Interviewed mid-November. Not sure how late in October you were talking about though! Mine was the first week.

Thanks! Mine was the second week in October, so there goes that! 🙄 Boo, don't they care that I already live in Brooklyn??

There are some proposed plans that I am aware of, but nothing has been decided on by the new hospital administration. Consolidation of services is likely to happen between Bay Ridge, Downstate, and LICH, but any details beyond that would just be speculation. For students, I really don't believe that clinical exposure will suffer. Kings County is not linked with Downstate financially, and as such, is not under pressure to reduce services.

Thanks a lot for the response. I'm glad that the medical education (exposure) received by the students will retain its integrity. But it really is a shame that so many of the hospitals in Brooklyn are facing these financial hardships.

Again, thanks for the insight, I really appreciate it!

Bahh! I interviewed on 12/6 and am still waiting to here back🙁 I've been frantically checking my mail...is there no place online to check?

dont get too frantic. i interviewed 11/15, still nothing....

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but is there anywhere to see your status? Everytime I go to the link they sent us for the secondary, it leads to a page that says that they're no longer accepting applications, so I figured there was no status update, but I just went back through the thread, and it seems like there might be. Am I missing something?

nope, no status page.

I know its not spring yet, but has anyone heard back from the 'hold for spring consideration' list yet? I've been on it since mid November.

I don't think we're going to hear back until after May...

Have any accepted student received the "additional info" about health clearance, shadow-a-student, etc etc? I got an email in December from admissions promising that something would be sent "within three weeks". All I've gotten since is an email for the shadow-a-student, but no letters or packages in the mail

No follow-up letters over here.

I got a "SUNY Downstate College of Medicine_Confirm" email that talked about the follow up letters. But I think if you have the shadow a student email you should be good 🙂

Has anybody who interviewed 12/19 heard back yet?

Or here. Just the shadow a student e-mail. Did anyone receive confirmation that the acceptance offer letter was received back in their office? I just realized that they never confirmed that they got it back. Maybe I should email them.
I still haven't received confirmation on Acceptance confirmation, and I submitted my acceptance by hand on the 17th last week.

I've been reading about the Downstate hospital-LICH history, and it sounds like LICH should never have been acquired from a financial standpoint. I'm not familiar enough with the area to know how this will affect patient care in the area, but I read something last week that LICH has been a huge money suck and half of its beds were empty last year--so something like this felt inevitable to prevent Downstate from going down.

anyone interviewed 12/11 or later hear anything back yet?
Thanks and gl to all

Did Downstate students rotate at LICH before 2011? Like is the hospital a significant portion of the rotation spots? If not, would it necessarily effect the quality of clinical education at Downstate? Just trying the gauge the effect of a possible closure.

I spoke to my friend who is a MS2 student at Downstate. Here is what I learn about the problem.

The hospital only serves ppl with no insurance; hospital closing is bound to happen, but if they close it down, where will these ppl go? it's a dilemma. The administration is kinda facing a GM like crisis. The employee compensation is ridiculous, and they over hired for the same position. For example, they just cut the employee vaca days from 60 to 45. The research foundation has a lot of money and the medical college has endowments from alumni, but the hospital is definitely sinking. So the finances is pretty complicated. Rest assure, this should not impact the pre-clinical years, but highly the latter two. If the hospital does close, the clerkships would be a little further away, but there's always Kings County Hospital across the street.

Downstate's fame for good clinical training doesnt come without a price. As sub-i in internal med, you get on avg of a 8 patients, whereas at other schools, 4 may be already too much.

Congrats, maybe we'll see each other in the fall!

Any word on that accepted students facebook page yet?

I haven't heard ANYTHING from them since I was accepted! I even sent them a "hey could you please confirm that you got my signed offer of acceptance letter back" email and NOTHING. A little concerning, but...
