the financial trouble is the Downstate HOSPITAL. Most notably LICH which was acquired last year (and very recently voted closed) Hospital finances are notoriously complicated, and LICH suffered from gentrification of that area where residents preferred the close-by Manhattan hospitals for their major, non-emergency care. (I'm grossly oversimplifying here).

Everything I've heard indicates that the MED SCHOOL itself is doing okay. They have a brand new, updated curriculum per LCME accreditation recommendations. I think there's a new building in the works in 2014....and it appears that the closure of LICH won't affect students' clinical rotations too much (aside from removing a rotation in a nicer area? haha)
 
Does anyone know when the committee meets each month?
 
Is Downstate receptive to letters of interest and updates pre-interview?
If so, who should it be addressed to? Dead or admissions office?

You are a silly person. On your Ivy League high horse asking about money and stuff. You are a bad man Mr. Cottenberg. You have no diligence and are not deserving of this spot! I hope your spot goes to someone else. Do some research. Google some stuff. Get diligent. Research the Danish healthcare system and you will see how mistaken you are. I don't want to hear another Squeak out of you!

So I just got put on hold for spring consideration. Do they even have a waitlist right now?

I asked my friend who's an MS1 there and he said that being put on hold this early means youre near the top of the waitlist and have a pretty good shot of getting in.

Did you get the email today? When did you interview? Past downstate threads look hopeful for people on hold list.

I got the email today. I interviewed January 9th. Would you know if there's a waitlist right now?

Last year, there was an alternate list which seemed to ranked higher than the hold list. It doesnt look like anyone reported being placed this year.
 
Anyone going to the Research Day thing? Anyone doing shadow-a-student another day? I'm wondering if the Research Day thing will be helpful

I'll be doing shadow-a-student. Haven't decided on a day yet, but it'll be sometime mid-march. Research Day doesn't seem to offer much more info, so i'll likely pass on that.

I think I'm gonna be going to the Research Day. I did the shadow-a-student day already, which for me, consisted of attending class and eating lunch with the student I shadowed. It was a good experience, but the majority of the day was me sitting in class and listening to a lecture. It was an interesting lecture, but I was looking for a more immersive experience (seeing how the students interact with one another, maybe revisiting the dorms/labs etc.).

At least for me, trying to get a feel for the school on interview day (where they do the tour) wasn't very possible, since the whole time, all I could think about was how my interview went (rethinking my responses; wondering if messed up, lol).

So I'm hoping that the Research Day might be able to give me what I was initially looking for. And I also think it'll be cool to meet other accepted students. Unless there is a "second look" day that'll happen later on in the year, I think the Research Day is the next best thing.

(Also,I live in NYC, so it is easy for me to get to DS. If I had to travel from far away, I probably wouldn't visit again so cavalierly)

And congrats to you guys who got in (and good luck to those still waiting to hear back) !

I won't be attending unfortunately. Looks like a cool day though.
 
If you've studied the interview feedback questions on SDN, you're solid. Just relax and have fun with it.

Has anyone who interviewed on January 14th heard back yet?
 
i did- was put on hold on 2/14 via email. no news is good news 🙂
 
is anyone on SDN scheduled for late March interview dates yet? Just wondering if their slots are nearly full.
 
I am scheduled for March 14th. I got the invite two weeks ago I think....
 
hi guys I have a question...the people on hold are they on hold for spring or alternate list? Or does alternate start only wen class is full?
 
For those who hav been accepted or waitlisted, have you guys received the email from studentedition@certiphi requesting consent for a background check? I interviewed on Jan 7, and havn't received a decision from Downstate through email or snail-mail yet. However, this past Tuesday, I got an email from studentedition@certifi asking me to consent to a background check because I was a "waitlisted or conditionally accepted applicant." Has anyone expereinced anything similar? Thanks!
 
Anyone receive the health forms / housing packet yet? The email in early january said it should be out within 3 weeks. Not sure if it's just me that's missing it..

I interviewed Jan 10 and got the email as well, but on friday of last week. I called them up and asked what's going on. Lady on phone told me that if you haven't heard, that means that you're getting a letter. Which is a good letter! Congrats and maybe I'll see you there!

Just got my acceptance packet in the mail today. Keep a good eye on that mailbox the next few days!
 
Has anyone that interviewed on 1/17 heard anything?
 
Gosh it's been a month
How much longer for my post interview rejection 🙁
 
I feel like Downstate has either offered acceptances or holds for spring consideration post-interview. I don't remember seeing any alternates or rejections... Right?
 
Imahippo, pup113 - do you guys know the ration of # of interviews vs # of acceptances? My interviewer spent quite a lot of time convincing me to not give up untill August, even though I did not ask him any questions regarding "how much longer till I hear back". He gave an impression that either class is full already or I am only good for waitlist... But I would love to attend even if i find out a few days before school starts

Interviewed 1/29, put on hold today...I guess that's better than a rejection?
 
and the wait is over. rejected today via email. applied in the summer and hadn't heard anything til today.

I estimated about half of the interviewees. My guess is that Downstate had about a 33% matriculation rate and it will accept 3x the number of spots not including the combined program. The MSAR listed the number of interviews given out.
