Hello,

I have a question regarding acceptance in osteopathic schools. If you interview in early September and are accepted, but are still waiting to hear from schools, can you hold a seat in a class without withdrawing your other applications? What are the policies on this issue? I am interested in four osteopathic schools in particular. I've received interviews during mid-September for two of them. In a best case scenario, if I were accepted in to both of them (within two weeks-by the end of September) could and how would I hold a seat, while still waiting to hear back from the others? HELP ME PLEASE.........

You'd have to pay a deposit for each seat that you want to hold. For osteopathic schools the deposits are typically $1000 and more (nonrefundable). Which discourages applicants from holding multiple seats since there are relatively few DO schools. So you can hold as many seats as you want without withdrawing your other applications, it will just cost you a lot of money.

Thanks for your reply. Is that the situation with all osteopathic medical schools? Typically, do acceptees only hold one or two spots, eventually matriculating to one those schools?

I got into CCOM in December last year... I held my spot until March when I got into PCOM. I wouldn't hold onto more than one seat out of fairness to other applicants...

Wow I didnt know the deposits were that large...eeek! If you hold a seat and then decide to attend a different college, is your money refunded? Is there a date that you can withdraw by and get your deposit back, or is it always nonrefundable? I am interested in MSUCOM in particular, but havent been able to find the info on thier website.

Some schools don't require you to give your deposit right away, depending on when you're accepted. I only applied to 6 schools, but I remember at least one of them saying on their site that if you're accepted before around November 15th, you don't have to pay the deposit until like December. Also, some schools have you pay the deposit in 2 parts, so you only lose a certain amount if you withdraw between payments. Schools also give you 2 weeks usually (as far as I know) to accept or decline, so you can wait and see if you hear from anywhere else before the deposit is due. If you're worried, contact the schools you're applying to and ask how things work.

To sum it up, just because you get into one of your lower choice schools early on, does not necessarily mean that you are locked to that school if you choose to hold that seat (you'll just be out $1000)? In such a scenario, early interviews would be bitter sweet, particularly if they are not your top choice schools....

MSUCOM's deposit is $750.
